I have replaced 2 scooby engines myself,

That pulley wheel is installed by samurai swordsman. With an air gun, a scaffold pole, and some other tools I took 4 hours to make it budge. Never seen a factory fitted one come loose.

Which means one thing, some one has been playing with your motor before you got it.

IMHO.

I should say it is risky!!!

If the socket slips, you will round off the nut and then its a drill it out job. You would be very lucky to save the crank in this situation.

 

I reckon on mine it was the previous cam belt change when the dealer did not tighten it up fully.

Tip I got for removal the first time was .... put a 22mm socket + breaker bar on the nut ... rest the bar on the floor ... 'blip' the starter ... told it was risky but that so far they had not had any bad effects ... also saw this idea on a Mitsubishi tech tips board.

Might help someone. But you take your risks ...

[I agree, a sort of one off chance ... not for me thank you .. luckily mine came undone without too much fighting.

What sort of toruque are you using to do it up .. I have been advised 90-100 ft lbs same as the 2.5l

100 lbft and a thin wipe of Threadlok.

There's actually no torque setting in the manual for this bolt.
