Iain - I'm by no means expert in this field, but I'm pretty sure that my Sony digicam can route an incoming analogue signal from its phono sockets to the DV Out. In other words it can act as a analogue-digital convertor. That way you could perhaps process your legacy analogue stuff direct into Premiere?

Guys wonder if you can answer a question for me? Not being techie at all, I used XP's movie maker to capture some video and the quality was pretty poor even tho I used the highest capture rate I could, is this down to the software, fire wire or the camera Canon MV600i?

At a guess I would say software. I don't think MM is intended for creating DVDs and such like. It may not be encoding very well. Get a trail copy of a proper DVD making software and see how it compares. Displaying on a monitor will not always show the full quality anyway. You need to watch it on TV (by turning it into a DVD or SVCD) to see the actual quality. Either try the all-in-one packages or get the different bits to your own taste.

the previous versions of pinnacle studio were good but v8 is known to be bad as they themselves withdrew the latest patches as it was full of bugs and made it worse.

had v1 of studio dc10+ with analog, ive been trying to use v8demo (not forking out again just because they wont support previous versions) but also trying other packages out.

all those with dc10+ which packages can use the dc10+ card that is good?

So far the only package I've found that will work with the card is Studio 8, (which is what came with my card). I upgraded to Edition 5 because I was told (by Pinnacle)that it was more powerful etc. But when it arrived I found that even that doesn't support the capture card. Very annoying, especially as they sold it to me as an upgrade for my existing package

Edition seems pretty good for dv editing, but the really good thing is that you can't have Studio 8 and Edition 5 installed on the same machine at the same time because they use different versions of the same dlls, (and so one completely clobbers the other). So, I have to finish editing all of my analogue videos with Studio 8 before I can switch to Edition for editing the dv.

And I've just found out that they've now branded Edition as a legacy product with limited support, and I need to give them even more money to upgrade to "Liquid Edition" if I want continued updates.

I for one will NEVER be buying another piece of software from Pinnacle.....

iMac's with DVD Burning will write DVD's and do nice menus etc...

iMovie and Movie Maker 2 are soo similar it's hard to believe these were written by two seperate software companies, and one didn't copy the other ~ahem~

If you believe the advert, it seems to do everything that Studio 8 does, plus a few more bits besides. Just a shame it doesn't seem to support the Pinnacle hollywood effects stuff (the one pinnacle product that actually seems to work quite well).

Downloading the demo now

Unhappy

Tried the ulead demo last night, and wasn't impressed. Doesn't seem to have bugs like the Pinnacle product, but the quality of the effects and image quality is definitely inferior. Looks like I'll have to keep going with Studio 8....

the effects are definately not as good, though im sure you can use hollywood fx with it. But do you think the capture is much worse than studio8? do you use compression & if so which one do you think is the best?

have to save after everything i do as it keeps dumping

I was using the hardware compression (from the capture card) and capturing at the maximum pal resolution. The capture seems ok, but the quality of the final rendered output is not as good as from Studio.

I couldn't find a way of getting hollywood fx to work. My version came "integrated" with studio 8 rather than as a separatle installable product, and so perhaps that's part of the problem.

I didn't have it "dump" once whilst I was playing with it. Not tried the software compression though. Perhaps that's where the problem lies?

as studio constantly dumps i had to try VS though that didnt seem to have a good fadein/out - which is the only effect i use & is the basic and most effective of effects. I like the way it uses smart-linking so you can move your video clips about and your project can still find your files, something studio doesnt do.

Its gonna take ages to do. Think i may have to ask santa for a new pooter and get all dv...
