Em because they can be made better, just like any other Impreza or car on the market?
People change things:
1) Because they can
2) As an extension of their personality (p5nis)
3) They prefer a stiffer ride / de-tangoed lights etc
4) For some there is no such thing as too much power even if they can only get 5K out of an engine as a result.
5) To prove a point

so you cant say a uk is perfect for the uk if most people change the engine and suspension (the very things that seam to be championd as being the best of the bunch)
uk cars have there purpose imo, but to say they they are better then jdm cars on the points mentioned when most owners change these points is a bit daft isnt it
hell i even changed the suspension on my jdm car although i changing the springs back to jdm rates as i did not like the new settings LOL
but i wouldnt put the car back to standerd power
my mates uk turbo is getting really, really close to my 1/4mile times now
from memory he has done the following
induction kit, samco hoses, dawse device, full decat, serioulsy lightend and balanced flywheel, group N clutch, intercooler splitter, sumthing else involving a spring to increase turbo boost? and probably a few other bits and bobs
his times are 0.1 seconds faster then sum times i set with a pannel filter and a cat back exhaust when i 1st got my car
i sumtimes wonder why he didnt just buy a faster model to beguin with?
he also lowerd and uprated his suspension and fitted strut braces etc etc
i would think that only sumbody who was happy with a standerd uk car, could argue the point about it being more reliable and such

also
a lot of people will use there car on a 1/4, most of my mates do this so a 1/4 mile time is very important to sum people
intresting post above about sticking a tuned jdm car and a uk car into a traffic strewn town center and see who comes out first
how about sticking the same cars out into the country sumwhere and asking them both to cover sum nice decent roads?

I dare say that someone who modifies a UK spec car would probably modify a Jap spec car - you get used to whatever you drive AND WANT MORE MORE MORE !!! IF you're blood is 100Ron like mine
I have a MY96 UK turbo wagon for the missus, reliable, quick, pretty bombproof, 140k on original engine and everything's as healthy as can be. In this case, a UK car is better than a Jap spec car because I know it's history and I know it's reliable.
An impreza turbo is a great car, but different people want different things, some want a WRX and some want a UK car. Therefore, what will be 'better' for one person won't be for another.
Mechanically, there's nothing wrong with a UK car compared to a japanese car. It's all down to preference and choice.

i agree, bottom line is why buy a powerfull car if you will keep the speed limit, lets be honest here!!!
buy a bloody smart car if you want to stick to speed limits and get good fuel eco.
also there is no problem selling the imports. There is plentyof people that want the cars as subaru designed them for japan, there only unreliable if you dont take care of them, and if you dont want the car enough to have to put up with some problems get a smart car
Note- i dont agree with driving like idiots, but, you dont by a 300bhp sti 4 to drive round at the speed limit.
regards

This board never ceases to amaze me. People getting all eliteist and snobby over JDM vs UK. They are all Subaru Turbo's. I have a UK model and AFAIC it has the same status as a JDM.
What next, people not waving from a JDM just incase it's a UK model he is aknowlegeing and therefore some how inferior.
Sad bunch of cvnt's on here at times.

well, maybe, no need to be rude......
my point was made becuase i get anoyyed with people rattling on about how its quick enough and whats the point in having ANYTHING other than a uk car
personally, i think its personal preference. the thing that infulences me is when i went to japan i saw how cheap the cars actually go for, thus i realised that for the price of a uk car you can get a low milage (well in kms) car in very good condition with lots more for the same money as a uk car.
show me the money!

The UK car, however, covers 100,000miles on the same clutch, brake discs and turbo!!
For 3 years now I have posted here and never have I risen to your bait but having driven a FSH MY99 UK turbo for the last 2 1/2yrs and having replaced guess what
Clutch
Discs
Engine
Gearbox
Wheel bearings (3 out of 4 ain't bad)
3 x maf sensors
Springs
Shocks
and only last week... the turbo
These are only the bits off the top of my head and that's forgetting the consumables
and the mileage as of this morning..... 100,006 miles
and all the above were replaced because they wore out or blew up as opposed to it being my choice to upgrade so take your claims about UK reliability and shove it.... as your senile old mind clearly no longer works too well
Oh and they were all out of warranty
Not saying the same wouldn't happen to a Japanese car but .....
Have a nice day now .... oh and it's got silver wheels before you start doing your usual zzzZZZzzZZZZzz and questioning peoples sexual preferences

Sith has a valid point.
Might all be a big laugh just now , but it snowballs into more and more crap threads.
Some of the quickest cars on the board are UK turbos, some are JDM's.
The question being asked about why do owners upgrade the power and suspension all the time on UK models can be asked of any Impreza not just the UK models.
I would even hazard a guess and say that some owners actually get enjoyment from making their pride and joy a bit quicker and handle a bit better

What's really ironic is that Pete has (as I understand it) one of the worst performing UK Scoobs - the MY00...
No wonder everything still works

Just swapped my Y reg 2001 Pug GTi for a UK Turbo MY00 Wagon.
In 2 1/2 years on the Pug and 40K miles:
New Discs (£250+)
New Pads
New external door strip (Warranty)
New Glove box cover (Warranty)
New interior carpet (Warranty)
New ball joints (Warranty)
New front shocks (£250+)
New Exhaust (went the day before I got rid - phew!)
Full set of new headlight bulbs (£120+)
2 Front Sets of Goodyear Eagle F1's with the set on when it went, in desperate need of replacing. (£110 per tyre)
Regular visits to the dealer with the Engine warning light on due to faulty sensors.
Day after I got rid of it a recall letter to say there is a fault with the brake pedals (f**k!!)
