i think it should be "night time activities" and we should ensure that scoob96 submits one or two pictures.

I'm up for this. Night time whatever. Just wondering if my shiny new lens will arrive in time or if I'll have to slum it with the current one.

Any particular night-time thing? Architecture? Nature? Lanscapes? Sport/activities? Or just whatever goes as long as it is dark outside?

And I can host pictures quite happily as well. Let me know if needed...

To make it fair can it be separated into Amateurs and Professionals, as it's obvious there are some very knowledgeable photographers here. Must be loads like me that just points and clicks and hopes for the best with a cheapo digi camera.

Redkop's got a point there. I wouldn't mind a bash, could be a laugh.

I'd prefer to see a subject (more of a "theme") where people can use a bit of interpretation. Often this produces surprising results, where someone has used a very creative interpretation of the theme to produce a completely different subject.

"Night time" to me suggests we'll get a load of night photos, and probably some of clocks at night.

Might be a good idea to split the winners into categories:
Best artistic effect
Best technical photo
Most original interpretation of theme
etc.

No pros on here as far as I know, only knowledgable amateurs - and then how do you differentiate?

Can I also suggest that when the photos are submitted the photographers make a note of film speed, aperature, frame speed etc.. It will help the newbies to photography (like me again ) get a better idea of what works and what does not.

This is one topic that I am looking forward to al ready

There are pro photographers on here, personally i think we should just all go into one big photo pot and the winner decided from that, this will give the non pro's something to aim for

I wouldn't have a clue where to start looking for any of the above. I just about know how to use the flash and as for manipulation by Photoshop, well........

One Pro here, but to be honest there are a number of good photographers on scoobynet, I'm just lucky enough to make my living at it - the downside is not getting any enjoyment out of taking photographs for myself anymore (or the time).

A technically superb picture of a boring subject does not necessarily make it a better photograph than a lower quality interesting photograph which provokes a reaction. However its obvious that someone with 'pro' gear ups the stakes a bit.

I say go for it - the best way to learn about photography is to take and discuss pictures with others, and with the knowledge that some here have (take a bow, Andy especially ) its got to help encourage everyone.

At the end of the day, its something that should be fun and you look forward to doing, not a case of it being a chore.....thats a sign of a pro (occasionally )

If we all make sure we use an image editing program that preserves the EXIF information, then this should be easy to see.

Question

can someone tell me how they host thier images? i have looked at a couple of places where you can pay a few quid and get some space, but they seem to have quite small file limits, like 0.5mb or so. do people compress their pictures to get around this or what?

ProperCharlie,

most people on here have freee webspace provided by their ISP. I've got 50mb with Nildram and 50mb with NTL. I use both and for simple photos and file sharing it works fine. Just save your documents onto your pc and then FTP them up to your webspace. Then stick a link to them in here to the file

[ img ]www.yourwebspace.com\yourpic.jpg[ img ] Just remove the spaces from the brackets in my image link.

Or just send them over to me and I'll host them for you

i'm also trying to get the geek at work to create some space on the mail server for image hosting. if i don't get a result there, then thanks for the offer.

geek: what do you want to host images for?
me: scoobynet
geek: low priority!

(i should have told him that paying his bill was a low priority too )

Photo's should be show here i think all in one thread with the title of thread being whatever the moonthly topic is, this should be started by the winner of the last one, i also agree with (i think it was darlodge) that if we know shutters speeds iso ratings etc we should post them to along with any manipulation we may have done.

What do people think about deciding on a winner, i see two options

1) each month on the closing of the topic i set up a little poll on my site with a link (you don't have to be registered to vote) in the monthly topic, which will run for 3 days.

or

2) the winner of the previous topic decides who wins their choice of topic, obviously we can't do this for first one so maybe simon, shaun or one of the mods could decide (i know josh is a pro photographer and scoobychick is quite arty so maybe one of them)
