Nozzer, the third alternative is to copy my memory card and race as me until you unlock it for yourself I think Gizmo wants to do it that way.

If you've signed up for Live I'll host and let you win at the Ring instead if that suits you you

Talking of unlocking tracks by winning on Live, can you unlock cars this way ? i.e. beat a car someone else has bought and you unlock it. If so we should club together and each buy a car and then lose a race with it to soemone who bought a different car. Get my drift (good pun what!)

Iain - it seems pretty good actually. Not as arcadey as something like Tiger Woods, and with the added benefit of Live play, XSN, and downloadable content (which I beleive will be courses and stuff - first one just after christmas/early jan I think I read somewhere).

Compared to Tiger Woods - I think Links has less players, brands and courses (though this could be/will be remedied by downloadable content you would imagine), but Links has (I think) more available shots, probably better ball physics, and is probably a bit more realistic. As I said, not played Tiger Woods for ages but I would probably say Links is better, especially given the Live features.

Enjoying it pretty much so far but havent played on Live yet. If you play a proper round against someone it can take like 90 minutes or something But I beleive there is also a fast play mode, whereby you all play your shots concurrently, which speeds a round up considerably.

Not really worked out the XSN thing, may try and do that over the weekend.

If you are a golf fan its definitely worth looking to get, Im enjoying it - I wouldnt want to over hype it and make you spend you money on it lol but I think it has been generally well received.

Hmm sounds interesting. I really enjoyed Tiger Woods 2003, (although I found it a bit easy / arcadey) so I may well take a look. I've heard that Amped 2 is pretty good online as well. Looks as though there are finally a few good online games appearing...

Yeah, with Tiger Woods it was quite easy to build up a players stats. Links works the same way in that you buy skill for control, putting etc....but they are much more expensive, so it isnt long before you need $150k before you can add one skill point.

At first I thought Links was just as easy as Tiger is, but I think all it is is that I picked it up really easily as the swing is similar to Tiger IIRC - have now hit a bit of a wall whereby I'm pretty good, but getting very good will take a bit of time.

With tiger I would win a tourney by stupid amounts, 20 shots and stuff. Not so on this - am winning more often than not but so far havent posted particularly stupid scores - just usually a couple of shots in it.

Of course, with a bit more practice I'm sure the one player game will be pretty straight forward, but then I guess thats where the Live aspect becomes cool.

I reckon you should go out and rent it and see if you think its worth it.

Oh, and it certainly isnt as arcadey as Tiger - no explosions when you hit is sweetly or stupid characters, and the commentary (though admittedly not the games strongest point) isnt quite as silly .

The only thing that annoys me a little is that the club head turns red when you hit a shot at max power - but I guess thats just to signify you have caught it right.

Links 2004 is very good. Played a round with a mate last night (and beat him ). Doesn't seem quite as polished as Tiger Woods 2004 and the american commentary is a bit irritating, but the controls are much more sensitive and the backswing has to be spot on which makes it better IMO. Good game, will have to play a tournament to get a better feel for it Worth a purchase, but just didn't impress me as much as Tiger Woods 2004.

Would pretty much agree with that re:Links/Tiger. EA games tend to be very good on the presentation front, but then more important is the gameplay really.

Re: Gotham - the last time I played a few days ago the best time on the Ring (on Ghost Challenge) was in the low 6 minutes something....

I think ive got all Golds on Gotham - there were one or two silvers that I was struggling to convert to gold, but I think I got them in the end. If not, well...nearly all gold (with a few platimums). Getting all platinums is gonna be very difficult...

Read somewhere that the McLaren F1 was going to be one of the first things downloadable - should be fun if true.

Nozzer, unlike these Aliens I am a mere mortal. I did it with lots of Steels Ran out of patience trying to win the races when the AI just pust you off at every corner.

I am six races away from unlocking the ring .. roll on lunchtime

I have pretty much platinum all the way through, except for the last three series' where I got too excited about unlocking the ring and just blasted through on Silvers

Played for an hour yesterday with renewed enthusiasm towards unlocking the ring but I've only just cleared the american muscle cars series!

One thing I noticed though, I've been playing NFS:UG and the Gotham cars didn't seem to steer half as easily, mainly down to the better/realistic handling of Gotham's cars though and I soon got back into it

<whispers>

Just to go back to Links for a second Iain - was having a go last night and one factor that makes the game harder than Tiger, and gar more enjoyable IMO, is the way you spin the ball. In tiger IIRC you apply the spin after you have hit the ball, so can pretty much guide the ball towards the pin/away from trouble etc....

In links the spin is applied before to hit the shot/as you do - so once the ball is in the air it all down to the golfing Gods .

Havent really worked it out properly yet, and am not entirely convinced it has been utilised as well as it could perhaps have been - but then, unlike tiger, how much spin you add on a real golf stroke is in reality a bit of a guessing game anyway isnt it...

</whispers>

Was not a big fan of the American Muscles series.....bleh!

I was the same at first - when I started the game I was trying to do as well as I could at each level.

Soon I just wanted to unlock everything and did everything at silver (which was failry straight forward) except if I found one challenge particulalry easy I woul go again straight away at a higher level.

Havent been on for a few days - must get back on and maybe will see some of you guys on there.

John

Question

Am I the only one that thinks the challenge/enjoyment of the game is impaired by the fact you can unlock everything by just playing it on the easiest setting?
Least with PGR 1 you felt like you'd occumplished something by getting to the next set of races.

Well thats why I started by challenging myself - but to be honest there was quite a lot to the single player game so when it came to coming back to improve my medals, it didnt and doesnt feel tedious or anything. IMO there may even be a greater sense of achievement because if, ay, you struggled a bit to get a bronze or silver, then you would have thought that a gold or platinum would be impossible. But they are not, and you can really see how you begin to master the game which for me brings a good sense of achievement - seeing how you improve.

Also, of course, Live is a huuuuuge part of the appeal of this game - in many peoples eyes I think, they see the single player as a bit of a hurdle just to get some decent cars for Live play.

Cool

Hmm, Links is sounding more tempting by the minute. I'm busy all weekend, so not gonna get a chance to try it out, but I may make a trip down town on Moday to grab a copy

One bit of pgr2 live which is also good is the time trials, (single player). On one of the car challenges I managed to rank 5th in the world!!!!! Online racing rocks

With respect to the game being too easy....

Well personally I object to forking out my hard earned cash on half a game because I don't have the skill to unlock it. You should be able to achieve most, if not the whole game, if you are only an average player.

CM4 is typical here, I will not buy it because you have to devote too much time and achieve too much to get the extra cars and tracks. And now they have devised unlock codes that are in someway encrypted so I can't unlock the game they go where the sun don't shine!

Personally, I object to a game being too easy. I like a bit of a challenge, (which seems to be sadly lacking in the majority of games these days), and feel very dissapointed when I finish a game quickly.

I don't object to a game being hard, I play copious amounts of Grand Prix Legends, but it shouldn't restrict me to a small part of the game because I am no good. I've paid for the whole game, I should be able to play it!

I got the GT1 amongst others for competing the World Series with Silvers. Doing the remaining golds now to get the Merc, apparently it's a bit of a beast at the ring.
