For anyone interested, as an aside, it would appear that the subaru standard BOVs (aka dump valves, aka air bypass valves) from '97 up to and probably including the latest models all appear to be some form of piston type unit, rather than a (weaker) diaghram based design.

John,

I'm well aware of the differences between a MAP sensor and an AFM/MAF :-)

It is indeed normal for a turbocharged engine's ECU to run a MAP sensor as this would allow overboost proetection etc. If you know the charge temperature and the VE of the engine you should be able to figure out how much air has gone into your engine from the MAP reading. You can get the same info out of an AFM/MAF but protecting from overboost becomes problematic. Compensating for rapid changes in the butterfly angle would require some smart programming as well. A MAP sensor gets round these problems.

FWIW, the AFM/MAF on the EEC-IV comes in on pins 14/15 and the MAP signal comes in on pin 45, with an indication that it ain't present on some applications.

Cheers,

Pat.
