Lot of hype surrounding P1,basically a I.M
approved grey import.Reason these and scoobs
with the PPP have to run on 97ron is the fact that they are using japanese ecu's(i.e
STI/WRX).Drove a P1 on wednesday,identical
to every grey I have ever driven except suspension felt slightly stiffer.

Cool

On the advise of someone on the BBS (sorry I forget who ) I drove over to Wilsons of Chadwell Heath on Saturday morning with my other half to see a P1 in the flesh.

The car looks fantastic (IMHO) and we were both pleased with our choice of successor for our MY98. The guys at Wilsons were very good to talk to and answered all our questions (cheers lads if you are reading this). They were very protective of the car and would only let us look from the outside so the interior was not tarnished for the new owner when collected. The only downside of the visit was that I want one NOW but on a positive note the other half has agreed to let me have the brake upgrade done

From the "discussions" on this thread it appears that we all have an opinion as to what is the best car, and for me it is the P1. The import path was well looked into, and several serious enquiries made which nearly ended with me owning a brand new Sti V. The import companies were all decent people to deal with and assured me their warranties were good. The car would have been fully maintained by Pete at ScoobySport, so no problems there....but I felt the back up of the full 3 year warranty was worth the price I was being asked for.

This is my opinion only and I will be available for discussion at any meet/track day where I will be prepared to be taken out in/offer rides to other owners who, like me, just want to experience what another variation of the Scooby line is like.

Yex - waiting less patiently now I have seen one for real

SteveL:
Well said sir.
FWIW I predicted long ago that a remapped ECU was marketing hype.

Phil:
So what's that all about then?

I'd say at least Jonathan defends his corner - from what you say we are to sit on here meekly and not be allowed to express our opinions?

A real funny thing on this BBS it always those who disagree that are described as 'childish' . . . so who's really more mature then?

Jonathan:
no chip here . . . not available for the STi5 - though you'd know that?!?

Finally - awesome driving toady (ok, yesterday now) from Eddie Irvine eh Jonathan? (go on, bite!)

Red face

Regarding the ECU. Ive had it clarified that you DONT have to run it on 97RON. Youre not invalidating your warranty on 95. It just as would be expected perform better on 97.

Yes the ECU is pretty similar IMHO. STI mapped it, so they'd be pretty stupid if they didnt learn some of the lesons from the Version V. I would imagine that if you put an VI and P1 ECU together, apart from some emsions tweaks, they would be the same boost levels etc.

Interestingly or not as the case maybe, Ive seen a dyno plot of a P1 against an STI V. Identical, apart from the torque comes in a little earlier on the P1. BUT i would imagine that the same would be true for a VI vs V. ECU tweaks between model years etc.

Steve L

I would agree, very similar driving experiences apart from the handling. But that debate could shut down the server with opinions.

Jonathan

FACT : As good as the P1 may be - it aint 5k better than a standard STi6.

FACT : As good as a P1 is, it aint as good as an EVO6. Wishy washy comments about hard ride & engine note are just people determined to find something wrong - an EVO6 makes the P1 feel limp.

FACT : As good as a P1 is, it is TOO LATE. This car should have arrived AT LEAST 12 months earlier.

I am happy with my P1, as has been said by MANY Scoobie drivers, they are also happy with their Scoobies as well (more are happy than not!).

I chose the P1 because from the first pictures that I saw, it was the car for me. I was able to test drive a car before I decided (lucky me, thanks Mill Lane) and that was all it took to finalise the deal. I will continue to be happy and I have no problems with any other type/variation of what is basically a GREAT car.

I will still have an interest in the imports as well as the UK variants (maybe even the P2/3/4 etc) as and when I see them.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and at the moment we are still free to air those opinions. I look forward to reading those opinions on this BBS in the future and will continue to smile before and during typing

You can make direct comparisons with things like acceleration, top speed, etc., these are facts. You cannot make direct comparisons with "feel" or "worth", these are subjective.

Like it or not, some people feel that a P1 is worth 5K more than an STi. Equally, some people clearly think that it isn't. Neither side is right or wrong, they're simply expressing that rare freedom, the chance to air their own opinion.

Some people look solely at the bottom line, some don't, that's life. If it was all about money, the market could only support one type of car per price/size range. There would be no BMW/Audi or Ford/Vauxhall battles as the buying public would only be buying the cheapest one. Clearly this doesn't happen.

I personally feel that the P1 is arriving late to market, but the fact that they had to up the initial run from 500 to 1000 indicates that plenty of people disagree with me.

So what if a P1 is a modified STi? Surely an STi is just a modified WRX, which itself is just a modified version of a medium-sized 3-box Japanese family runabout that was designed in the late 1980's.

Good luck to those of you with P1's and those with STi's, they're both fine cars that suit different people. Healthy disagreement makes for an interesting BBS, snide comments and derision don't.

Me? I'm more than happy with my UK MY00 & I have no plans to buy a P1 or an STi, before anyone starts!

Hmm, fine, all you guys . . . consider this:

A new model will severely damage the residuals on the previous model, so where is the common sense in paying a premium price for a tarted up run-out model?

You pays your money, you makes yer choice.

HOWEVER I will save a copy of this thread to re-post when the new model blows the old model residuals away & all the presently happy P1 owners start whinging.
Mind you from where I sit (in climate control comfort, naturally) the prices the then P1 owners will want for their "limited edition STi" can only help MY residual so I'm real grateful to you wealthy guys for helping out a poor Northern cousin like me in this way.

Jonathan,

hope you are still enjoying your P1.

Just caught one of your earlier comments which is quite interesting. You said that whilst there were many people prepared to have a go at IM/Subaru UK and Prodrive and yet left Park Lane and Warrander alone.

It's an interesting comment - I think that it is because IM/Prodrive represent the establishment and in reality if you go the establishment route then you are compelled to deal with them.

If you go the import route - whether that is personal, parallel or import there is a much greater range of options which means that the individual is much more empowered to make his/her own choices of type and source of car.

As they are free to make choices then we don't feel compelled to pay Warrander/Park Lane prices, but will go there out of choice - or use independents, or Track Marques, STi Imports, or go it alone. We don't have to pay top whack, but may choose to for peace of mind.

Maybe, just maybe, this explains some of the tension between the P1 and STi debate.

All the entrepreneurial self-sufficient STi owners have had their independence diluted by the establishment...

Just a thought,

R
