so fekking what, its only offensive if some1 is small minded enough to take it as an offense, if u ask me they should grow up.
so what do u call me then a Brit, well I could say thats racist, ur putting me in the same boat as the scottish and the welsh etc etc I dont wanna be catorgarised with them, they are a different breed, or do u call me English? cause I was born in England? does it fekking matter, call me a wa/\/ker for all I care, its my choice not to be offended by it unless its said in a manner to offend me.
Some people need to get a life.

If I ask a white person in my office "where are you from?" then they will give me a straight answer - "Watford etc" but if I ask a black person then they usually take offence to the question. Why?
"Where are you from?"
Oh, I just recently moved here, I was living 3 roads down.
"No, before then"
I was brought up in Cobham.
"I mean where were you born?"
I was born in Middlesex
"Oh, I was hoping for a more interesting answer"

Definately a tricky one.
On the one hand we should all try not to cause offence to people (for whatever reason) but on the other I do think that people should try to lighten up a bit too.
I'm Chinese (UK born and bred) and have experienced a few forms of racism to date (no violence fortunately) but am really struggling to understand this Jap thing and how it can be seen as being derrogatory/racist. I guess you can't help being sensitive but you can read too much into things IMHO.
All this name shortening is probrory (or should that be probably!) a cultural thing as, having been born in the UK, I have adopted the Engrish passtime of taking the mick out of our Keltic neighbours and also out of my partner for being Welsh. In doing so I do leave myself open to abuse too so maybe that's why I don't have a problem with names.
As an aside I went to my dentist recently to book an appointment. The receptionist (quite innocently) gave me an appointment at 2:30 and I PMSL. Boy was she confused.

Jason - I still cannot accept that the term Jap originated in the war. It may have taken on racist tones during the war - it was bound to. War is all about race isnt it?
By the same token, there is no question that the term "Argie" was used to describe an Argentinian prior to the Falklands War. Again, during the war it may haven taken on a racist/derogatory tone, but that is not the origin.

I checked an online dictionary for the definition of racist and got:
[n] a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others
[adj] discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion
On the basis of the above you are 100% incorrect! If I say I have a jap import or even if I use the term 'jap' in a descriptive context then by the above definition I'm not being racist. The simple reason for this is that I don't have any prejudiced belief of superiority. FACT. And, I'm not being descrimatory in any way. FACT I'd simply be using the word in a descriptive context notwithstanding that I accept others have in the past used it more venomously.
I know I shouldn't say this but I'm going to: IMHO 95% of so-called racism is some punter placing themselves in some sort of minority and thinking the rest of the world is against them Too many people just look for an excuse to shout, 'he's being racists', 'he's sexually descriminating against me', 'he's not giving me the job because I'm disabled', etc, etc. Too many people just love to be offended and thrive on making an issue of it! A lot of a time I don't see this being so different from the case of the robber that cut himself on the kitchen knife left lying around in the house he was robbing and then sueing the owners - its a classic case of people taking the pi$$. I personally am so sick fed up of 'fuel surge' comments that it offends me but I just deal with it. A bit of ribbing is life and yet you are complaining at the use of a word in a descriptive sense. Why?
Have you ever REALLY thought about racism??? How the hell can anyone actually slag someone for being of a different race. We're all human ffs - to slag someone because they happen to be black is just lame! At least slag a crap hairdo, or poor football skills or **** dress sense. Its not really any different from saying, 'ha ha, you've got two arms, 10 fingers, two legs and ten toes!' - its just a statement of the obvious. True racism is in the delivery of the spoken word. I could say 'paki' less offensively than 'hi how are you doing' if I worked on my tone of delivery.

BUT!!! Now you have read it, and know facts! Next time you refer to any Japanese people or things, think twice about using that phrase, and if you do, know that you are being racist

My scottish mate never took offence at being referred to as Chilly Jocko But then he always had the last laugh when it came to whisky drinking and me being very ill and him still right as rain
In seriousness here though these names we call each other arnt referring to skin colour, surely thats where real racism needs to be dealt with.
Jap, Brit, Chilly Jocko etc do not refer to colour merely country so where is the problem in that?
