Fair enough - in fact my mate (another Tang, as it happens) did react strongly when Chinese food was referred to as 'chinky'. It's a lazy phrase, but one which I don't think is - in association with food - ever said with malice. Said as a reference to a Chinese person it would probably be offensive.
Actually... what is the acceptable (equivalent to Brit etc) abbreviation for 'Chinese'? Is there one?

I don't think we can conduct our lives and conversations on the basis that someone somewhere might take offence - or, indeed, burst into synthetic outrage - on the basis of what is said without intent. Nor can everyone be expected to have to hand the cultural history of each of the 120-odd Members of the United Nations! There may be Britons who would object to being called "Brits", but an overwhelming majority of Brits don't give a Monkey's! It' "Brit B@st'rd" - or, indeed "Jap B@ast@rd" which is offensive or racist, since the state of mind is revealed therein. And remember, too, that language is changing in a way that fosters brevity through abbreviation, text-speak and so on.
So, Keigo, I think you're a bit over-sensitive. It's clear from the posts to date, that you are regarded as "Japanese", and an STiIV as a 'Jap import'. And, I suspect, there's pretty few on here who, having called you a "Jap", would object to you calling them a "Brit". Live and let live, hey??

Just chatting to a work colleauge about abbreviations.
Does there need to an abbreviation for Chinese??
I do not mind being referred to a "Fat Chinese C*nt", but there are two of those things I can change, and I'm only bothering with one of them!!!

What a load of fuss over nothing ffs, if I was abroad somewhere and someone referred to me as Brit then I wouldnt even think twice about it. What is the difference in that case of shortening another countrys name and referring to someone from that country as the abreviated term???
Absolute load of b0ll0x, just people being paranoid about where they are from by the sounds of it and wanting to throw about the racism card
I'm proud to be British so have no reason to find it offensive, why would you be offended by being called Jap? Surely you are just as proud of being Japanese as I am of being British so where is the racial hatred in being called an abreviation of your country's name?
Another thing an abbreviation of a country has no relation to skin colour, there are British people of all skin colours as I am sure there are Japanese people of all skin colours. How can it be racist on that basis? Its referring to country, not colour.

Cheers
Si
A Scot...
and would never be offended if someone used that as I accept that that's what people do and I suggest you accept the same

Matt - no, no, no, no and a million times more NO!!!
The English do NOT use Taff, Jock or Paddy in a derogatory way. That is just what you have been brought up to believe. Trust me!
We *actually* quite like the Welsh, Scots and Irish. We *even* support them when they're playing international sports!
LOL, this is unreal!!

Hmm..its a difficult one this.
Many people use the phrase "chinky" for a Chinese takaway, but I accept that is offensive in a manner that "Brit" or "Scot" is not, those both being simple abbreviations for British or Scottish.
"Chinky" is not an abbreviation for Chinese. It is urban slang, effectively and similar in my book to "Frog", "Wop" "Yank" (rhyming slang, anyone?) "Paki", "Jock" or "Pr1k" (being Scots street slang for anyone male from South of the border and east of Wales )
Jap is, however, a formal abbreviation for Japan or Japanese, but I can understand that someone from Japan may be offended by its use. But I do believe it falls into the same catagory as Brit, Scot, Serb, etc as a simple abbreviation.
For something to be "racist" to has to be used with intent to incite. Not simply used.
perhaps it would be more appropriate to say the use of the term Jap can cause offence in certain circumstances.

No, of course there doesn't need to be an abbreviation for 'Chinese'. It's not a long word. Then again, neither is 'British', yet an abbreviation for that word/name has evolved. Long or many-syllable references like Uzbekistani or Czechoslovakian (old-school) may be argued to need abbreviating. Shorter names may not. I was wondering if such an abbreviation existed...?

What makes me laugh is most are not Chinese or Indian etc They are British. They are probably sons/daughters of those born here as well.
To me If you are born in Japan you can call yourself a Jap. If you are born here your british.

We are talking about what is offensive, so I gave you a real world example in my life.
Would you're wife/girlfriend/both () be offeneded if they were referred to as a 'slag' or a '*****'??? Calling me a 'Chinky' is worse as that is not a comment on my attitude, standard, morals, etc only what people believe my background to be!
Would you call someone a '******'?? If not, why call me a '*****'. If you would, well then there is nothing I can add...

My Aunt had a cat called Taffy...she had to rename him when she moved to Wales
Imagine what the neighbours would have thought with her in the back garden shouting "Taffy, come on Taffy!"

you havnt even explained as to why the word jap is deemed offensive?
I am not the spokesperson for anyone with an Oriental background!! I am giving you my opinion on another comment raised.
As I said in a previous post:
I do see the word '*****' that was mentioned earlier as a racist term! Why is it racist, because I'm offeneded by the term. In the same fashion that 'Paki' is also a racist term.
Brit, Jap, Aussie, etc I do not see as a racist term.
This is just my opinion!

Andy to be honest I was not referring to you and the chinese/***** argument but the Jap/Japanese terms.
I would agree that chinky in other reference other than referring to fast food would be construed as a racial slur. I even agree that it could be construed as offensive when talking about takeaway food, its not a term I use for it just because I have always called it chinese takeaway.
However the French in the past have referred to us as Roast Beefs and I would not take that as a serious slur being British

Some of the stuff you did to our POW's in the second world war was barbaric - you are lucky we still speak to you at all - so stop wasting my lunch hour reading this twoddle
If people came on here going on about Nips then that is clearly racist (except in the VBH posts )
Jap is just a colloquialism and if you look anyone in the eyes when they are using the word you will see there is no malice in them.
