Tough **** mate, I've had a JAP import MR2, now on my second JAP import - a WRX and I will continue to buy JAP imports and call them JAP imports.
I think referring to a car using the word JAP is in no way racist. If someone asks me where it was made I will reply, "Japan" just as I would reply in the same manner if my car was made Pakistan I would reply "Pakistan".
And tomorrow night I'm gonna order a takeaway "CHINKY" for dinner or might go out for a RUBY.
Get a grip FFS!

To clear things up, yes I am Japanese, and yes, I do take offence when people refer to me as Jap. Why can't some people just take a fact and accept it. Just because you didn't think it's racist, now you know that people take offence from it, can't you just lay off using a word?
I initially wrote slightly jokingly, so that people would read it and learn, but for those of you, who retaliated with idiotic comments about what, in my books, is quite harmful and serious issue, and decide to continue to use the phrase knowing that people take offence from it, then I shall flag you as racist. How would you like that?

I really don't see the problem myself (but I'm not Japanese). It's just an abbreviation. Jap... Japanese, Brit... British, Aussie... Australian. Etc, etc...
A good friend of mine is Chinese and apparently the term 'chinky' (often said absent-mindedly in UK as slang for Chinese takeaway food) is offensive to some Chinese people. That's rather different to the 'Jap' reference here, though!

I do see the word '*****' that was mentioned earlier as a racist term! Why is it racist, because I'm offeneded by the term. In the same fashion that 'Paki' is also a racist term.
Brit, Jap, Aussie, etc I do not see as a racist term.
This is just my opinion!

Call me a 'Chinky' to my face and see what happens!
Sorry I forgot to say, that I will let the term go in reference to food, but only because it will linger around forever since the late 60's/early 70's!

Wasn't this discussed on here some time ago?
I drive a JAP import, JAP being short for JAPANESE. There is absolutely no insult intended.
I think some people spend far too long LOOKING for things about which to complain.
It's the same as someone calling me "love, chick, dear, duck" etc. Depending on the person and the manner in which it is meant, that could be an insult or it could just be a tag.
"Paki" I think has different connotations now because it HAS been meant as an insult in the past. "Jap" however, is largely used in referring to the origin of some cars.

Refer to the food, restaurant and takeaway that way, *IF* you must.
Refer to a person that way and even my dad (who is 63) will get pissed off and angry! I don't know any Chinese people who would let that comment go, without at least having a go back!
