how are you guys finding the SMGII box on long journeys? I went into a dealer at the weekend and the sales manager recommended the manual over the SMG. He said that the SMG can be a bit too harsh and he's had numerous people coming back after six months looking to change for a manual.

I think skittles is right. Most of the newer cars have SMG.If you look at the price of secondhand ones the SMGs fetch a premium rather than cost less.I can see however how some people may find it harsh for their driving style,I find its aggressive nature addictive.Great standing starts not faffed because of my lousy clutch control would mean never being embarrased by a 'lesser' car again!
Dave I intend to get one under warranty so if the engine pops BMW can bloody well fix it and give me a courtesy car which I'll abuse on a daily basis!

Deep:
Engine this is not that big a deal - 2 days in, and thats it. Admitedly it should not happen, but it is (as I understand it), not a design fault, but a weak component from a supplier.
Anyway. SMG - thare have been numerous software upgrades on this (mechanically the same), which your dealer will do if you ask nicely. Likewise the Sat Nav operating system (you can ndo this yourself from the web).
Are you going for a convertible or coupe?
Having owned one for 1.5 years, I would suggest as a minimum:
-SMG
-19" wheels
-Nav

Kevsworth, Thanks for that useful insight. I am glad it only took you three attempts to write that insult down.
With brain-power like that, I'm sure NASA will be headhunting you as I write...
