WELL LANE 6 THE RESULTS
#31
Steve (Emery, not Darley)
Just out of interest, which figures do you consider to be on the high side? Because on some, there may be a reason
A bog standard MY00 ran 3 weeks ago on the TTS RR day at Well Lane and got 214bhp. I've seen a bog standard Fiat Coupe Turbo do 220, an M3 Evo do 321, a Civic VTi do 158, and an Audi TT225 did 224.
I could go on...that's the advantage of organising lots of RR days.
So at least for standard cars, the rollers at Well Lane seem to give EXACTLY book figures. As for modded cars there are far too many variables to make concrete judgements.
But this old chestnut pops up after every RR I do.
Not P1ssed off here and having a rant, just setting the record straight for anyone else reading this who doesn't know what these things are all about
People, I think, place too much stock in the actual figures they get on the day, but as P20 states, all these are good for is bragging to your mates down the pub.
The real purpose of the figures is not to give a definitive bhp output for the car, because if you go to different rollers on the same day with the same car, I GUARANTEE you will not get the same figures.
The purpose of figures is twofold:
1) To COMPARE different cars on the same day, under the same conditions to see what mods work and what mods don't. But even this can be misleading as there are good cars and bad cars, and how the car is driven will probably effect how it performs. A regular motorway cruiser will often outgun a weekend only car. As we saw on Sunday, 2 identical specced Bugeyes pulled quite different figures.
2) To COMPARE your own car against itself after mods are fitted. Hopefully so you can see what mods are working for you and what mods aren't, but again if ambient temps are different on different days, this can be misleading too. If you RR in December then fit an FMIC and only pull 2bhp more in July, chances are that the FMIC hasn't netted you only 2bhp.
On the whole I think too much stock is placed in the actual numbers and not in the roller's ability to be a tool of comparison.
Ok that's my lesson for the day over
Back to some work
Cheers
Rich

Wanted to add my thanks for the day, I was a little disappointed in my figures, but at least they were higher than last time
The other important use of rolling roads is looking at the shape of the graph, for road cars the peak figure is pretty meaningless (although it would still have been nice to hit 300 ) Comparing my last run and this run, I can see the benefits all through the rev range that have come from Scott's remap and new coils.

Quite true REV,
I've played around with the gain on my boost controller on various visits to Well Lane.
Although my peak figure was the same on 2 occasions, the graph with the gain setting adjusted for quicker spool up showed my torque building much quicker, which reflected the quicker spool up I was feeling on the road.

fully agree with rich there, done dozens for r/r days now across the country and always found well lane to be there or therabouts with most types of car, be it fwd/rwd or 4wd. the 2wd stuff does sometimes tend to wheelspin there, and struggle to get power down when over 400bhp, but generally we find the figures match up.
previous days there with us saw harveys car on its old spec get 417bhp, which was a figure later repeated with us at g force (supposed to be spot on for accuracy) with us again within 1 or so bhp.
we have seen so many runs there on shootout days go off without hassle, which is good testament to the people there and how practised they are.
poss not the best /latest or flashest set up in the uk but predicatble and repeatable, and fair!
we have a r/r day there ourselves on 23rd nov if anyone wants to watch.

top result from Damians MY03,STI
Damian is that all that's been done; just the Back box and a re-map?
Have you de-catted it?
Would like to get another 30 break out of the PPP kit but can't work out the best way to achieve this!

Dazza,
It has backbox and centre section by Milltek. The downpipe has been taken off, chopped just below the cat and a wider piece welded on to get improved flow. It was then re-mapped at Powerstation with the ECUTEK software. I re-set my SECS monitor before going on the rollers and it only acheived 1.31bar. On the road it can spike as high as 1.55 bar but generally holds in the mid range at about 1.35 bar tapering back down to a conservative boost level at the top end.
So there would be more to come if it was de-catted. From reading on this BBS Bob Rawle has the same spec car and is currently modding it to see it's capabilities.
Just for info, my car is not a 'C Spec' it is a WRX STi with the DCCD and other additions such as quick rack steering.
