Pug no question mate - especially still having the other golf. If you were talking Mk1 then the choice would be harder, but a Mk2 brick over the stunning and still undated 205 - its a no brainer 
205 goes better, handles better too, you know it makes sense

Looks like a swing to the 205: knew I could count on you SJ . All we need now is Dream Weaver, Scotsman etc.
Did a very sad thing last night and took all 3 out down the lanes (quite refreshing, my current smoker is a Nissan automatic). 205 is still so quick and entertaining (haven't driven it for a while), 16v is still so poised and fluid. 8v is still the best all rounder and the one you want to drive every day. Strangely, despite years of abuse and neglect and 120k miles, the 8v is tighter and feels better built than either.
I need a garage extension.

Phew nearly missed this.
Has to be the 205 every time. Much better looking, better handling, faster, more fun, and much easier to tune/get advice from on here as we all drive 205's anyway
Not bothered about Golf's - they can look good, especially the 16v, but they are a bit lardy, and cramped inside as well.
IMHO, keep the 205 and get yourself a Mi16 or Xantia 2.0 Turbo engine in it.
My Mi16 205 is superb, and can eat Golf 16V's for brekkie, especially when I get the twin 45's on (198bhp, 900kg) - yippee.
Keep it Olly and join an exclusive Scoobynet sub-club

DW - I agree with that siggy on the Pug BBS too
There certainly is a place for MI conversion (can't believe you're going TB's too!! mad!). If I were to have 1 fast car I'd probably Mi my Pug, but I've got the Supe for speed!!
My sorrento, other than Magnex BB and K&N is as standard as they come and staying that way!!!! (I still have original parts to go back on too!)

Will either be going the TB route, or swapping the unit for a Xantia 2L Turbo engine. It fits in apparently with a few tweaks, and provides 180bhp and 180 lbs/ft torque. Tune it up to 200bhp and et voila, another 205 beast.

Remember that the 2.0 Turbo is HEAVY (iron block v's alloy for the Mi). The torque should compensate, but various people believe that the extra weight affects the handling - I'll let you know in a few weeks!!

Cheers Kev - what do you think is best to do?
My Mi engine is smokey and rattley, either Piston rings or stem seals gone, but it seems to go well, although it makes some horrible rubbing noises on tickover near the cambelt cover. Worth rebuilding, or cheaper to put a new engine in?
PS think the turbo engine is from the XM not Xantia.

The quality of the Golf should be streets ahead of the 205
DW - I'd keep the alloy lump mate. That 1.9 16v unit is good for 220bhp if you want it, and easily make it as powerful as the turbo engine. Plus, if you are even the slightest bit handy with mechanicals then you can rebuild it yourself......save loads of cash!

As Scotsman knows I have Pugs coming out of my ears (9 205/309/306's) @ present, but generally the Golf is a better built car, and is a nicer ride - The g/f's Mk4 and my E30 M3 have a MUCH more solid feel to them than any of the Pugs, BUT the Pugs feel more exciting for it.

You really need to get someone to fully check out the engine before you commit to spending - A cylinder leakage test will tell you exactly where the problem is (bottom end/inlet/exhaust valves or ALL!!).
Rubbing near the cambelt cover sounds like a poorly positioned belt, but may be ****'d pulleys, or water pump (although this would usually fail).
The XM, Xantia, and 406 all have the same Turbo engine - All cast and HEAVY - I'm not sure that this would be cheap to get fitted as the wiring is more complex, and more fabrication is needed.
Pity you are so far away as you could have popped over for us to have a look @ the car for you.

I still stand by my comments. The whole "Golf" thing is an Urban Myth IMHO.

I had a mk2 golf and it was built brilliantly for it's class. Name another family hatch that is built better? very few, if any (I can only think of the A3 which is pretty much the same car).
It may not be merc E class or Audi A6/8 build quality but who expects it to be. The car is produced cheaply and for it's price and category it is well built.

The Pug just FEELS flimsy. In reality, nothing seems to break or fall off any more or less than the Golfs.
My 8v has worn the miles better than the 16v, despite having done more than 40k miles more. There isn't one rattle or squeak, impressive for a car that cost less than a weeks wages. I blame bigger wheels and harder suspension as fitted to the 16v.
As for my 205, there is a new squeak or rattle every day. Call it character. My old one (a 19k miler) was no different.

205. Now that they are no longer part of the barry scene (or at least not as much), I have massive amounts of respect for those people out there who own nice clean honest ones. My only complaint about them is the 1.6 alloys look like **** and if you put on the 1.9 ones everyone will think youre trying to pass it off as a 1.9. Nevermind

as for the mk4 - 103,000 and 320 bhp....try doing that to many other cars...without spending a penny on the internals or the g/box
