Paul,

I assume your (STi5) heads are the ones on the pictures. They are definitely different than the Eurospec STi8! The heads I have on the Eurospec STi8 engine are exactly as the lower on the pics showed by John. From what I can remember what I saw on a Eurospec MY99/00, those heads are the same. (also small ports) John, made quite some power with those small ports I think...... (perhaps that explains why John had to use lots of boost achieving that)

I have E-mailed the pics from my MY03 STi heads to John, so he can confirm.

P.S. You can easily see the difference as the bridge between the ports comes a lot higher in the inlet compared to the "big port" heads. You also see LHS and RHS on the small ones and LHC and RHC (Spec C???) on the big ones.

Mark.

Thanks Mark. I cannot post the pictures from work, but also I can take the tape off the inlet manifold ports on my MY00 Euro engine later on to look at the ports to confirm if large or small.

If the MY00 UK ports are large then perhaps we have the following? :

MY99/00 UK: Large ports, soft cams
MY99/00 STi/P1: Large ports, average cams
MY02 WRX: Small ports, average cams
MY02 STi: Small ports, average cams
Late STi or RA: Large ports, hot cams

Gents, we seem to have established a bottleneck, I can confirm that the ports on the STI 7 engine I am currently stripping are the bottom versions (read Small).

back to basics as well (Paul headless chicken mode OFF)

Compression test

1 - 130 psi
2 - 130 psi
3 - 125 psi
4 - 130 psi

Errm, 3 out 4 on the bottom limit, 1 (No 3 surprised) Out Of Spec)
Going to check the timing hopefully visually and with a light. If that's correct then WTF has happened to my car!

Just to make sure, all the plugs were out when the compression test was done?

Cranking is otherwise rather slow leading to low results

I am sure they would have done.

In which case the results do seem rather low. They will be affected by cam timing, but not a huge amount given your probable cams.

Just heard from them, plugs were left in, auxiallary power supply attached to my battery to ensure fast cranking, test carried out twice and same results achieved.

And.....

Timing checks out ok

B*llox, WTF do I do now? How can this have happened?

Question

May not be a problem, It may be just a poor example, I'll get them to do a cylinder leakage test to see if any of the cylinders are actually losing pressure?????

I think the manual states the plug should be removed, so comparing results with plugs in, to number in in the manual probably isn't 100% valid.

I would expect 150-165psi with plugs out.

Paul Good Point, Interesting though that no 3 is lower than the rest??

Steven, I think they leave three plugs in and put the gauge into the one cylinder with no plug in it.

#3 is only 5psi lower than the rest. I think there is actually a max difference number in the manual to, around 15psi IIRC.

Also worth checking that the test was done with WOT and the engine at normal operating temp.

Andy what is WOT? But yes it was done at normal operating temp.

On the subject of the ports Large & Small, has anybody measured the volume of the large ports & the samll ports?

Didn't realise the throttle moved??? Thought it only had the one position....lol

Ordered GRUPPE-S headers after much deliberation. Should be interesting because this is the only mod I'm going to do before we remap so we should see exactly how much gain there is from these items alone.

???

I will check my MY99 in a few days, I got curious!

P.S. I just called a guy who has 4 pairs of MY99/00 heads (eurospec) and he checks for any differences. After that I will get one to check out myself.

Mark.

EMS, Dowser, could you measure the volume the inlet ports hold if you get a moment.

Thanks

Good time to be asking, the builder will be measuring up for compression ratios soon. I'll get him to check this too - it maybe a week or two though...

Big ports in MY99/MY00 Eurospec heads confirmed! They look big and different though.

They measure width: 56.5 mm and the radius on the sides is 16.5 mm

I think however the JDM STi8 and STi7 Type RA have still bigger ports. (look on the NASIOC link)

I will bolt off my STi manifold this weekend to confirm if the eurospec STi ports are smaller! (I am curious myself!!!)

Richard,

Do you have MY98 or MY99 heads?

Mark.

Confirmed!!!

The ports in the MY99/00 heads are a lot bigger. The measurements I posted before were done at the top of the port. These dimensions are (about) the same with the STi, the difference is deeper in the port. The MY99/00 ports are wider and higher.

I have send some comparison pics to John B. I canīt upload them myself.

Mark.
