Snap,

Glad the car has been recovered and hopefully there won't be to much, if any, damage.

If you'd like to e-mail (as per profile) why they left it after 6/7 miles, I may be able to enlighten you some more.

Cheers,

Ed

Has anyone got a carbug fitted to their car as an alternative to tracker/trackstar? www.carbug.co.uk
It seems to have everything that tracker has, but you can track the car yourself using their software.
Just wondered if it's as good as it looks.

Sorry to hear that M8, hope the car is ok.
My Cousin had his Scooby nicked a few weeks ago. Saw the car going off the drive way.
When he phoned the Police and told em it’s got a tracker and no petrol in it they were quite confident the car would be recovered very soon.
Imagine the surprise when tracker say your car hasn’t been fitted with our devise.
The thief’s did a splash and dash and the Police lost them at 150.
The car was recovered the next day smashed to bits, my Cousin is not happy especially when the insurance started saying the car isn’t covered for theft because there's no tracker.
I think tracker and the insurance company sorted this out in the end and I think the car will be written off.
It makes you wonder why you bother sometimes.

Question

SNAP any chance you can mail me of the whereabouts where your car was found? I'm a local and just intrigued.

No worries though if you are unable to do so.

I'm also in this area and would be interested to know where the car was. Perhaps we could organise a Scooby-meet there so that whoever nicked knows that we are on to them.

Glad to hear you got it back and I hope there's not too much damage.

Hi Guys,

Still completing further info/details (Clifford/Tracker/Police, etc) and will get back to you all as promised. Don't want to hogg the BBS unnecessarily, but only to inform everyone.

Re. Tracker/Clifford, now the Scoob has been recovered, they will carry out tests to see why the devices didn't kick-in (we all have our guesses) - but let's not spoil the Police's work, who have found more then just finger prints. One new development is that they also broke into a neighbour friend's '02 WRX but just left it as it was - interesting that, and more info to the Police.

Many thanks to THECIRSCH, who rightly offered to elaborated off line.

Certainly welcome the idea of a Scooby meet at the recovery site - may take you all up on that as it certainly would be a novel location for a meet!

Cheers All

Disklocs are sh1te.
id gone out to a club one night put the yellow devil on all ok.
Came back realised I had no key with me.
Me and a friend, one in the passenger seat holding the long bar and me outside the drivers just forced it open with a few tugs.
All in all 40 seconds!
I wrote to Disloc several times - no reply.

That's interesting about Disklok. If it's the same model, "Sold Secure Approved. Attack test time 18min 53sec" - qoute in Argos catalogue.

On the earlier discussion, which THECIRSCH had kept discreet, there is an interesting article in daily rag. Anyone has objections to mentioning it?

Some fitters are selling info about car security fitted by them. heard of one in London who had his laptop nicked with tons of details on it.

The only trouble with all this security is....If they realy want it they might get realy nasty ...

Its only a car...

someone told me that tha's what is going on in Brighton all the time. They take their car to get an alarm installed, a few days later car disappears. The installer either keeps or reprograms a remote for that car, and then takes it when he wants. Kinda worrying isn't it. I guess they will get caught one day.

The problem with any alarm system is there are ways to get round it..there has to be so they can fix it.

When i had an alarm on my Motor bike and stopped at a garage once the mobile phone mask next door screwed my signal from the remote and caused the alarm to Lock itself down...

The AA came out to fix and phoned up a database center of how to diable the alarm...he gave the model number of the alarm and they ran him through how to disable without the alarm going off...

So if he can get hold of this info..anyone can...

Client of mine who is very security aware.Wanted a new system fitted to his house. He had a non UK company fit it. Even they dont know the address. They got picked up at the airport and delivered back a few days later. It was all paid in cash. Very nice system. But even higher protection by no one knowing what was fitted and who did it etc...

Alarm fitting companies can easly be targeted for info etc on their computers/files etc..

Damn that sucks.

All i can add is that IMHO you did all you could - kept it locked in a garage, had a good alarm and tracker fitted.... but a professional is always going to beat any system... so glad your ok and didnt have some louts smashing up your house to find the keys. If a professional wants your car - he'll get it - even if he has to come back.... which worries me about your neighbours car - they might have decided they needed some other kit b4 stealing the car....

I heard about a bike owner who noticed his garage door was unlocked for a few nights in a row - thought he must have left it open... later that week the bike goes walkies. Police said the theives would have gone in to check what kit was needed - and would come back rather than smash the bike - which would have lowered its re-sale value after they shipped it abroad !!!!!!

I said to one of the elec eng technicians that all you needed to break into these cars was a scanner tuned to the right frequency to record the signal of the remote and then some means to play it back.
The old approach. Extremely popular back home for a period to sit in the bushes outside someones house with your Sony / Panasonic / etc... television learning remote. When they flipped the automatic garage door the remote learns the signal. They go out, you go in.

For every security measure there is a counter measure.

PS2 games will be unhackable. Anyone seen how many bootleg copies there are out there.

If someone wants something bad enough they will get it. It's a sad state of affairs.

My boss had his BMW stolen Sunday morning by way of throwing a wheelie bin through his living room window and getting the keys. All whilst they were asleep upstairs. They are getting bolder.

The police told him the latest trend with tracker likely cars is to steal it and leave it a few miles away a little off the beaten path. This means they are not in the car long and at a lower risk of being caught should it have a tracker. They then monitor the car for 24 hours. If it is not picked up within that time they go back and steal it properly with the assumption that a tracker would have activated it that time. Means they don't waste valuable time tearing the car apart trying to find something that may or may not be there.

Could explain why it was only 7ish miles away.

Well you guys said it, though perhaps we were being over Cautious by keeping quite about the reasons for the 7ish miles. It's also in the Sunday papers anyway. The one query I had with the good police who recoverd it (as in the other thread re. the aggrevated theft of the WRX), was that why not leave it where it was and attempt an arrest (get their backers/stop future acts, etc, after a few hours of community service, of course!)- response was: too Dangerous, lose it again, "policy", etc. Fair enough, given limited resources etc - but I was thinking of more subtle means which I believe is available.

As promised, the latest. And it's not Tracker or Clifford, yet,as they are still investigating. It's DIRECT LINE Insurance!

I need knowledgeable help, and also hope the following will be helpful to others, as it's turning into a right comedy (have sense of humour, so not a nightmare yet).

Met their Engineer at the body repair workshop. First question to me was "So, how did they get into the car then?" Well we were in bed, so no idea, obviously Pros, etc. "How come you didn't here the Alarm?" In the garage, seem to have muffled the siren, pros, etc??? "In my 15 years experience, I have not seen anything like it". Realy?! Well this did it and I asked him for his "expert" opinion, for starters, as to how Tracker really worked and why it had not kicked in? " Well, when vehicle is stolen, you call them, like" - avoiding the other point. He missed my earlier intro that it had Monitor. His tone, approach, etc made me really mad specially on top of the break in and theft, and have complained to DirectLine. They informed me today that TOAD will be inspecting the car tomorrow - 14 days after it's been recovered!! However, since DirectLine appeared to have developed a hostile approach, I have had the car inspected by Clifford with some interesting/positive results and they will not share this with them without my consent - I had all along suggest that they approach Clifford but they insisted on TOAD, so fair enough.

What I can't work out is what happened to the Impreza's original Immobiliser (i.e.the so called transponder in the key), even though the car was apparently hot wired? Shouldn't the ECU have "looked" for the right key? I was told by a dealer that it should. Any knowledge on this appreciated as I may be heading for further unknown trouble with this "expert". If you can help, then please let me contact you off-line - lets not teach more scum new tricks.

Thanks

The transponder unit is separate from the ecu on that car.

Never actually looked any closer at it so not sure how its plumbed in.

H,

What's it's purpose/function then? I was told by the Dealer for my old Turbo that it would actually stop the engine!? Don't worry if you don't know - I will contact Lancaster Pangbourne AM, before they close for good this end this month.

I'd be interested if the wrx owner found the bonnet up and the ECU missing. Also, SNAP, did you have any keys missing? and is the ecu the same one that was in the car?

RD,

Don't believe the WRX bonnet was opened. Re ECU, the Clifford dealer was having a similar idea - we are talking later today and will have this checked.

Cheers
