well i must say i'm impressed with the number of posts to this thread in a short time !! especially during today - dont no one work !
at least its given me a gr8 laugh tonite
picked up my MY00 4 door last wednesday and am looking forward to having some 'fun' in it, albeit safely and as conditions permit - hopefully without me being unfairly labelled cos its an Impreza !
not sure how long my first set of tyres will last, but i imagine they'll survive longer than the 2nd set as i begin to appreciate the talents of the car - and hopefully have some of the cars talents rub off on my currently average driving skills at best
if i didn't want to be able to drive a little quicker on some 'interesting' local roads then i might as well have bought a supermini and given the other ½ the holiday she wanted this year with the remaining cash but now aint gonna get !
i hardly think we're loweing the tone or contributing to higher insurance premiums which none of us want !
its them ba$tard tea leaves who want our cars without paying for them cos of how good a motor they are for the cash thats affecting all insurance premiums.
i do read max power, revs, evo etc but i dont have a baseball cap !
cheers and happy fun, but safe driving
Steve
p.s
i have read dickens albeit a while ago now ! aged p = wemmicks aged p wasn't it from Gr8 Exp ? memory maybe be failing me here.....
p.p.s
i plan to as i know i'll benefit gr8ly from one....

Well this all seems to be getting a little extreme doesn't it? An interesting thread, and for information my fronts lasted 15,000 miles whilst the rears still have 4mm or so.

KevinS,
As you have answered the questions I posed in my post, I do not feel that I am being unreasonable in assuming you are addressing the reply to me personally, so I am replying with this in mind.
I do not like being called illiterate or ignorant and I don't believe anyone who actually knows me will call me "laddish".
I knew about the scooby way back when it first became available as well, so you don't have the monopoly there. I was studying for my degree at the time (at a real red-brick university ), so I was hardly in the position to buy one at the time.
I will admit to occasionally perusing a copy of Max Power... but I only do this when there is subject matter that interests me, such as the kind of modification work and hardware required to build 1000bhp skylines. I assume that my technical interest in improving the efficiency and performance of the internal combustion engine makes me into some sort of Max Power Yob in your eyes.
Please don't get patronising about literature with me. I may not be as well read as yourself, but I have read more than you assume, including works by Shakespeare (in the original olde english), Salinger, Machiovelli(sp?), and Dante to name a few. I never liked Dickens that much myself, to much soap-opera for my liking.
I was taught to drive by an instructor for the IAM with ROSPA Gold. I have taken Roadcraft training with the IAM. I have very much enjoyed partaking in one of Don Palmer's MIRA wet handling days. I have driven a few track days. I don't appreciate being told to "go and get a driving course or two" by someone who evidently doesn't have a clue about me.
From the patronising, snobbish, holier-than-thou content of your last post, I am not really sure that you are in the best position to throw stones at us "Max Power Readers". Maybe you would be better suited to Porsche ownership (no offence to Porsche owners in general!). That is, of course, assuming you can afford to buy, insure and run one!

After seeing a couple of those Max Power documentories recently, I was wondering........How many mates would you need holding the Impreza down to do a 4 wheel burn out? Has anyone got that many mates? If so, do you read Max Power or Dickens?

First time I've looked at this thread. Wow, this Kevin has got to be a porker owner. Talk about being condescending to someone you don't even know (although I'm doing it now - ah well, we're all hypocritical to some degree).
Still, I've managed to kill a pair of F1's at the front of my car in about 5000 miles, and those wheels ain't even powered! Running with dodgy tracking for a while probably didn't help though...

Reading these posts has made me decide to put fingers to keyboard.
Kevin, You're wrong to make such sweeping statements and accusations regarding owners on this list, many of whom, like you are on their second/third Impreza having had them from way back. There's nothing wrong with pushing the car to its/your limits now and then either. In fact one of the great things about the Impreza is that it makes you want to be a better driver. That doesn't mean that we are all supermarket burnout cruisers. You talk of the bad image that these max power drivers are giving to the Impreza, yet it is you yourself making this generalisation and putting the idea into peoples heads. Nevertheless it's nice to see someone trying to preserve the image of the Impreza which many of us want to keep intact.
It's a shame therefore that SWA can't take a leaf out of the same book. I agree with Kevin entirely that the tone is being lowered by postings such as yours which only serve to undermine the entire purpose of this BBS. There's a difference between being witty, funny whatever it is you want to call it but your post was downright offensive. Not only is the content offensive but also the aggressive language in which it was written.
It's a shame to see the BBS go this way but luckily the majority out there are not like you SWA. I'm not talking about sliding sideways around roundabouts either, just the general tone and aggression in your initial and subsequent postings.
I hope you take note of some of these comments and continue to use the BBS in the way it was intended.

Moray, you boy racer Totally agree with your sentiments. Whats going on, people having a go hwo dont even know anyone else!?
Remember Firefox, was this not what stopped him posting so regularly. Anyone who didnt know him, check some of his posts, funny, helpful what this BBS should be. IMHO.
Everyone, shall we have a whip round and buy Moray a Puffa Jacket and a Baseball Cap?
Rant mode off.

Er, 10k at the front, 15k at the rear. On a Mondeo.
It's not just about sideways cornering - a lot of it is to do with acceleration and braking, in particular the smoothness or otherwise of the action.
Also, there's a lot more tyre wear when a tyre is cold - fling it around on cold tyres in wintertime and you'll destroy tyres ever so fast.
Obviously, my tyre wear makes me a puffa-wearing yob. Whilst it's true that I like nothing better than sitting down and discussing the latest issue of Max Pen15 with my good chums Simone de Beauvoir and Michel Foucault, I've never owned a baseball cap, don't possess any No Fear T-shirts, and shudder at the thought of paying £90 for some Oakleys.
Nick
P.S. The correct spelling is Machiavelli, and if anyone on this BBS has read anything he ever wrote, other than The Prince, I'd be amazed. The Discourses, anyone?

Perhaps before anyone insults me again, you should go back and look at my original message about mileage on tyres.
I think I am the innocent party here. I made a valuable post for anyone who was interested in tyre mileage and all I got were insults from people who think its clever to get 6000 miles on a set of tyres - the sort of people who shouldn't be driving Imprezas.
You don't need to to edumacated (I had better write JOKE SPELLING here in case someone else thinks that's how you spell educated) and well-read to realise that burning rubber is immature, but then perhaps that's what you are and when you get you first girlfriend you will understand what I am saying.
I won't be posting on this anymore. My Impreza is up for sale. My P1 is cancelled, some other yob can have it. It was great while it lasted.

This is one of the saddest threads I've ever seen on this BBS .
NickF - you haven't truly appreciated your Scooby until you've been round MIRA with Simone de Beauvoir

KevinS,
I don't wish to take offence at your words ... but I'm going to!
My previous post was a gentle reminder that we can't all be conveniently pigeonholed. I see I'll have to make my points more forcefully.
1 I'm 34 and have 2 kids. So when, exactly, am I going to get my first girlfriend?
2 Who ARE the sorts of people who should be driving Imprezas? You? Who decided this? Or maybe you want to have some secret Masonic society where you have to be 'the right sort' to be allowed to buy an Impreza.
3 "You don't need to to edumacated." Yes, I think you've proved this one.
4 "My P1 is cancelled, some other yob can have it." What, some yob other than yourself?
It seems that the exclusivity of the car is of greater importance to you than its dynamic abilities. By definition, therefore, you're probably the wrong sort to fully understand and enjoy an Impreza, which is a car to drive rather than admire.

I am truly amazed at the amount of abuse levied on Kevin following his inoffensive original message. Then when he fights back he gets labelled and abused further. A lot of what he says is unfortunately true and is proven by the continuing abuse.
Can anyone tell me what Kevin did wrong in saying he got 28K from his tyres? I thought not. I know Kevin and there is noone I have driven with who drives as well and as safely. He is very quick in the right circumstances. I did three laps at Goodwood with him. I think there are many here wouldn't be able to keep up. He left two other scoobies way behind and he has a standard car.
Kevin if you are really canceling the P1 I am very keen on taking your place email me asap or I will call you.

Lee,
KevinS was not not abused wholesale at all. Most of the comments were lighthearted. Only SWA directly abused him, which was a bit out of order, as KevinS' post was not offensive in any shape or form. However, I do feel that he has treated others on the board somewhat unfairly, judging them in the same way he feels he has been. To cancel your P1 order and refuse to post on here, just because a few people gave you a bit of a ribbing and were insulted by one person is a bit precious to say the least.
I don't know KevinS personally, and therefore cannot comment on his driving abilities or his educational background. He has done exactly this to some other people, and they were not even the people having a go at him. Perhaps if he had not taken offence so readily, and just addressed SWAs comments instead of having a go at everybody, the thread would have actually discussed how he manages to get so many miles from his tyres instead of degenerating into this ridiculous tit for tat exchanging.
