no what you mean about missing the rawness of the scoobs, i havnt even gotten rid of mine an im missing it lol
to be honest every time my missus drives it off up the street i rush to the window like a sad f****r and watch/gaze adornigly at ...yup my scoob !!! listening to that off beat engine note [prodrive back box, straight through centre and ggr sports cat downpipe] an it sounds luurverly [thats why i think i will need the supersprint, cant live without that raspy engine note]. then there is the times i slam it round a roundebout in the wet or dry an see what i can get away with[empty early morning roads of course], then there is the friendly scooby drivers...yup ill miss all of that an more.......but.....the m5 is gonna be whole other adventure.....an adventure that is backed by 400bhp and leather..satnav....tv....quality sounds.....toys toys toys.......oh and sadly you know what i like most about the m5..[this is totally sad] well here goes....the four exhaust pipes !!!!!!

Just to keep the thread going guys

I'm stepping out of my P1 - it's been fabulous, hasn't let me down once, but I'm after something different

A friend has just swapped out his RS4 for an RS6 - btw I copletely agree with Deeps' analysis of the RS4. The RS6 is awesome though. 2 years time, it will be worth £30k and I WILL HAVE ONE!

In the mean time, I've driven a few M5s - I love em, but can only afford an older shape high miler. I reckon I will buy a facelift in a years time, want the widescreen, lights etc - save up a bit more for a lower miler.

In the mean time, I'm test driving Cerberas - the 4.5 V8 to be precise - four seats, boot, fastest thing on the road, and I'm gonna attempt to do a "maintenance deal" with the dealer to take the sting out of the ridiculous servicing costs.

Having needed TVR in my blood for 15 years, I reckon now is about the right time.

So thats settled then, Cerbera, M5 then RS6.

I tried a couple of RS4's before the M5 and to be honest I was very disappointed in the performance and handling of them! Also I don't like the idea of driving an estate, I do need a big car as I have a young family, but I haven't got the 2 dogs yet!!!

I still own a STI RA which I jump into now and again and have a proper rip, the M5 just doesn't give me the buzz that the scoob does.

It is a tough choice some mornings, the 330bhp Scooby or the 400bhp M5....what a life!

The handling and performance on the RS4 are easy to fix - GmbH Sports Suspension for the handling and MTM Stage III for the performance. I have owned 2 x E39 M5s and 1 x E46 M3 in the past and my current modded RS4 is the best car I have owned. In my opinion the interior and build quality is superior to the BMWs and with the mods I have it is fantastic to drive with the versatility of being an Avant.

This doesn't of course stop me having my name down for a new M5 though!!!

I intend to test drive the RS4 and the M5 soon. The problem is though that the RS4 that I test is unlikely to have the mods mentioned so I w'ont know what it could be like. Though I want to steer clear of the modding game with the new car( it sapped so much time/effort and money with my Scoobs) it would be nice to know the potential is there with the turbocharged RS4.i simply c'ant afford the RS6 or V10 500 BHP M5.
Could be time to have a seperate forum for ex Scoob owners with interesting cars! (LOL)

you know lads im in agreement with deep here, the whole beauty for me of getting an m5 is that i dont want to start going down the whole 'mod fever' road, i got into that with my scoob, allot by some standards, probably not much by the hard core element. but, my mod was a temporary gain an thrill..then my addiction would make me want to add more tweak more etc on the whole it was a sort of love hate relationship, and strangly the moeny i spent never sort of equalled the feeling o got off spending it ???? [ is this making sense ive been on the bicardi's ?!].
the m5 philosophy for me is the total package, refined power, controlled agression, luxury, reliablitity, class etc, i admit i might , i repeat might want the supersprint exhaust, but that depends on what the m5 sounds like in the flesh, and, its not imperative. i looked at the s3's and rs's and even the idea of waiting for an rs6... but the fact that allot [not all] reccommend various mods to add bhp and handeling etc for cars that cost allot of pennies ...sort of spoils it for me.........
No defo m5 for me, it has the lot, plus stealth, and comfort, and like i said before, ive had allot of performance cars, and i admit the scoob has had the most sort of grunt, and what i started missing within a few weeks of getting the scoob was the comfort and toys, the lack of squeeks an rattles that sort of thing... but.. the power an handling sort of took over lol, im that sad i have a fantastic stereo that i never listen to cos i prefer to hear the exhaust !!!!

Done a few weeks with the 540 now and got to say the comfort, class, toys, build, etc more than make up for the lack of power compared to the previous (scoob and TVR)

Its not M5 quick but it is the car that BMW said was as quick as a 5 series needed to be so they wouldnt bother with an M.....untill they changed their minds!

Also just had the windows tinted, not pimp black....just classy dark!

Tiggs, very nice mate!! Are they Electrochromatic wing mirrors? Don't go breaking them, they cost a lot of money to replace! I won't scare you with the price of just the glass...

The motor looks lovely Tiggs's!

My M5 is a similar age and cost 10K more, makes the 540i great value!

I'm having my short shift fitted as we speak, probably the only mod. I'll be doing..I'll let you know the results!

yep, the M's i saw where all just over £30 and a few more miles......my budget was £26ish so when i saw this come up at £23 i jumped at it (there where only 3 540 sports between 20k and 30k in the UK on trader at the time!)

Performance wise its fine....its not a fast car (like an M) but its certainly much quicker than 90% of other road users. Its also hothatch quick of the lights which is a weired feeling in such a heavy car!

Once up and running it moves between 50-100 like a flippin train! you just dont realise its happening untill my little speed monitor Bings me at 95!

P1_scooby, The GmbH suspension is about £1K and the short shifter about £250 - £500 depending whose you use. The previous owner of mine certainly spent lots as it also has Stage III MTM (456bhp/428lbs), 380mm Movits, 18" Sportec wheels and Dump Diverters. Still I'm not complaining!!

Very nice P1!

personally i dont think the M5 is that much of an old mans car I'm only 28 ffs Needed M5 as new family arrivals ealier this month means space needed. I also like the stealthier M5 image but in estoril blue like mine it doesn't half get some attention!

My business partner has just this week swapped his S8 for an RS6 avant which will be fun when we just happen to meet on the same stretch of road wink wink

Thumbs up

saw an m5 today at donny south at north weald. driven by a youngish bloke, car was dark colour, not black, but looked the b0ll0x. i was worried an m5 might be a bit 'too old' for me, but fukk it, im 34 and when my girlfriend saw the m5 today she reckoned it was definately not 'too old', and looked the business.
definately on my shortlist for 'next car'.

M3 Evo : cheers dude, old man's car? who cares, I'm younger than you..(but only alittle!) I don't really care what people think or what preconceptions they have, I wanted a nice performance car, with all the luxury bits inplace! but overall a stealth image

paul : you'll enjoy the car even more! it took me 3yrs hard effort getting the p1, and it was lovely.. checkout BM3W there's lots of pics up in the galleries section..

Spudgun : defo check em out, even the boys in blue don't really take a 2nd look unlike getting stopped quite often in the p1!

Cheers

Question

I believe there was a ridiculous sounding M5 at that meet. Something to do with X or cross pipes or whatever?

I went from a UK98 Scooby with SS BBox P1, brakes and other minor mods to a 00 M5 with Sat Nav etc. I have had and am still (after 4 months) having mechanical problems with it. I had the clutch replaced after I bought it as I left the DSC on during the test drive and could not tell the difference between it cutting in and the clutch slipping.
Basically the car does not feel very fast because it is so refined and smooth to drive, especially compared to a Mk1 Scooby. I also average 19.5mpg with mostly commuting. On a track day at Crail I averaged 8.2mpg for 1 lap.
The seats seem great at first but are very bad around corners, no shoulder support at all and poor support elsewhere. The seat base is too narrow for my (only slighty fat) **** causing a sore thigh after 1 hr travel.
I kinda regret buying it but I am financally stuck with it for 3 years so I will make the best of it with a new Kelleners exhaust and uprated pads/ss lines/good fluid.
Before you buy one do at least three test drive for the inital Wow to wear off and evaluate the car more accurately.

BTW. The DSC is utter crap in the dry because it cuts in far too early so now I drive everywhere with it off and a careful right foot.

M3 Evo, There was one M5 which had Supoersprint X-pipes and a Kelleners exhaust which sounded more like a race car than an M5. Prefer a nice V8 rumble myself!!!

COLINM, so were the problems based around the just the clutch slipping, did bmw clearly identify them ir is it a problem that thye are still searching for ?...have you had to fork out for the repairs or have bmw stumped up the cost under the warrenty ???
im just as interested in the down side aswell as the upside on these cars.
