Thanks for the links, I'm all ready registered on the BMWM5 website so I'll have a look for the meet! I have looked at the AP Racing kit, to be honest I doubt if I'll use the M5 on the track again so I more than happy with the standard Disc's with the uprated pads and fluid, it seems more than adaquate for fast road use!

My scooby has Brembo 4 pots with Pagid 300mm grooved discs and pagid pads, no ABS but with this set up you don't need it!!

I haven't thought about the suspension, to be honest I'm spending all my money on the scoob at the moment, just brought some coilover suspension and cut slicks!!!

I have an M5 and its fitted with the ACS shortshift and their DFC susp.

All i can say is definately get a shortshift (any!) as it really transforms the change, much faster and nowhere near as baulky. The **** can get hot though in the sun, dread to think what it'll be like in winter....

The susp too is fantastic as it allows you to retain the original suppleness of the M5 for the long journeys/not in the mood, intermediate is great for a b road with racetrack reserved for when really going for it but only on a smoooooooooth road.

Very interested in the AP kit and also i think that supersprint exhaust looks fantastic. I've been tempted to buy some Hartge classics aswell but the OEM look so good why fix what isnt broken!

I really went to town when i bought my M5 but i dont care, its been the best car i've ever owned by a long shot! I cant see anything matching it untill the new M5 comes out!

just a couple of questions...

1. how much difference to the sound of the car does the supersprint exhaust make? i like loud cars

2.are they in any way tunable?

3. what insurance group are they?

4. are the peddles as offset as a 3 series?

many thanks!

Hi,

M3 Evo :

How much was the suspension kit? did you fit this after getting the m5 or when you bought it from the dealer?

Definately agree, best car I've had.. performance, practically, stealth, luxury etc.. .. although I miss the turbo kick from the p1 I had..plus the decatted boxer note of the engine, that was nice.

Spudgun :

Yes, the supersprint is alot more louder than the OEM system (gets better with mileage), I had the centre X pipe fitted aswell as the 2 backboxes. (The X pipe removes the resonators found on the oem system). It certainly is alittle more "droney" inside the car..

Some sound clips..
Standard.mp3

Supersprint.mp3

The m5 is tunable to an extent (not as easy as a scooby though!), there are performance coil, air induction kits, ecu remaps, exhausts, superchargers, throttle bodies etc..etc.

Insurance'wise, its a group 20.. (same as a p1 - although for me, the premium is actually cheaper!!)

The peddles are very similar to the ACS M3 ones, if not identical. (I'll get some pics shortly).

cheers

Tin

Red face

Hi P1,

Got the kit direct from the dealer fitted from new. Cost was a ridiculous 4k give or take if i remember correctly.

Your clips may have just convinced me to go for the supersprint system! Although i do do alot of motorway/long journeys so am 50/50 at present.

M3evo.. go for the exhaust!! it makes a big difference!!

paul.. no, the 4k was for the ACS suspension setup.. which is roughly the going rate.. as it still keeps the car under warranty too. ACS bits are mainly fitted by your local BMW dealer, hence can be very expensive..

The suspension is very good though, if not the best aftermarket one avail for the M5...

No - i have a standard exhaust for now.....

The kit i was referring to was AC Schnitzer DFC susp kit which allows you to adjust the dampers via a switch on the dash between sport (standard) intermediate and racetrack.

Cheers,

so can anyone give a break down of prices for mods for the 2000 m5 ?
dont think i could stretch for the suspension p1 im stretching too much as it is to get the m5 in the first place......think id be interested maybe in the short shift and definitely in the exhausts, loved the sound of that modded exhaust note that was posted,.....the supersprint one !
paul
im going to stretch to bout 25k tops in about a year, dont know what ill get year wise or spec wise for that on the m5 but im hoping the impending 500bhp m5 is going to flog some money off the 99-2000-2001 m5's for yours truly, obviously i want all the spec tv sat nav (me little lad wants the playstation and he has heard the supersprint and says i have to have it cos it is a racing car exhaust).......so maybe me an him can influence the missus

Gents,

I've received my UUC short shift for my 2001 M5, cost just over £200 from MotorMec! I'm having it fitted late this week so I'll let you know the results.
I'm tempted with an exhaust, but as I do a lot of motorway driving to work and back I'm worried about it being to noisey.

Apart from that I'm not changing anything else as IMHO the car is perfect!!

paul..

In a yrs time.. you should be able to pickup a good 2001 M5. A 99/2000 car would need to have the new angel eye lights (£650ish), celis rear lights (£180'ish) to give it the facelift look.

Exhaustwise, supersprint would roughly be £1200 (ACS exhaust is £1350) plus also the cost of fitting.

With the 2001 car, you'll also get the widescreen tv/sat nav option. Extremely hard/rare to find.. but can be put in a earlier car, if you get all the bits, (you need a MKIII+ sat nav drive to support the widescreen, MKIV drives are the DVD rom's)

Engine wise, power/performance is identical.

hope this helps!

Dom : Please let me know when you get this fitted, as I'd definately be following suite.

cheers

Top speed when de-limited is 186 mph. I seem to remember mine hitting the limiter at about 5500-5700rpm in top. Indicated just over 160 on the clock. They are redlined at 7200 IIRC.

If anyone of you M5 bods wants a set of original wheels and tyres I have a set for sale. I've had some interest, but nobody's come up with the money yet. I'll take OIRO £650 for them. They are in good condition, and would make a good second set for trackdays etc. Mail me Matt.Osborne@sun.com

Cheers

Hi guys. I'm yet another 'old scoober' who is thinking about a comfortable but quick luxury car. I've tried the XJR and found it does'nt handle at all. D'ont like the image of the M3. Thinking about M5 or RS4. Anybody tell me why the RS4 is'nt the better option in terms of space/speed/tunability/4wd etc?

Spudgun : yes you can get it unrestricted...I think Birds will be able to do it..

You can also get the ecu chipped, with the likes of Superchips who say that they can get 423bhp...

Matt : thats a excellent price for a original set of M5 alloys!

Deep Singh :

I did look at the RS4 before deciding on the M5, looked at 2 cars, one had too many owners (5 in the space of 18mths) and the other one which didn't have the creature comforts, satnav/tv etc.. plus both were considerably more than the M5, some 6-7k difference.

The build quality on the M5 imho is alot better, the attention to detail is higher too (eg leather sitching along the centre console, illuminated gear lever, full electric seats - inc lumbar and headrests..interior lights etc.. (small things but they do add up)..

Spacewise, the boot is very big on the M5, I thought the RS4 would have tons of boot space in comparison, but not really, the rear leg room is slightly more in the M5 (2 or my 6ft+ friends tested this out for me!

The grip on the M5 is very good, being rwd the danger of getting the backend out in the rain is possible, but the Dynamic Stablity Control (DSC) is very good, and puts on the brakes, even if your planting the gas pedal down.. its quite sensitive, but you can always switch it off.

Tunability, chipping, bigger turbos etc on the RS4 is possible, but so is a supercharger kit available for the M5 to push it well into the 550bhp area... There's a American NOWACK demo M5 car, with 640bhp at the wheels!

Anyways, take both cars for a nice long test drive and choose the right one...

just to add, I do like Audi's and don't have nothing against them.. the RS6 looks excellent and certainly better looking than the new shape 5 series!

Now what to get after the M5??? that is the question!

Just a few comments;

1) RS4 - you will not find any cheap ones unless it is LHD as there are only 450 in the UK and they hold their price. To me the build quality is better than on M5 and I have owned 2 x E39 M5s but smaller than M5 especially in the rear seats. RS4 needs GmbH Sports suspension and short-shifter as a minimum but power can be easily upped to 460Bhp with chip and complete exhaust. Check situation with wheels as the original soft wheels bend and Audi gave owners the choice to switch to a harder wheel.

2) M5 - really good value now as you can buy 99/00 ones for £25K although they will have high mileage. Good 2001 will cost low £30K. Would not even try and tune them as its not worth it. Several people have had a nightmare with Nowak and spent £30K in the process. Best mods are exhaust (improves the sound) and short-shifter. Prices are going to keep dropping as the new shape 5 series will be out this year and also lots of 3 year old lease cars coming onto the market. Imperative that you get one that has a FBMWSH and still has warranty and if necessary extend it as they are very expensive to repair. Main problems people have encountered are with oil consumption on early models, Vanos rattle and clutch problems.

so in a years time i should be able to get m5 + toys[satnav, tv etc] + supersprint +angle eyes[dont know if im all that bothered about that one] for 25k.......so far i got a 99t prodrived scooby wagon with plenty of kit on and 2K ....LMAO
SEEMS A LONG WAY OFF
oh and this thread if you hadnt noticed has been viewed about 1600 times lol if i could maybe make a suggestion. ill give my acc no and sort code, i need just 1pound from each view...thatll help me along eh ?!?!?!

I'm sure that the M5 is a fantastic car but would you have one if you didn't need the space and the 2 extra doors? Isn't all that weight going to compromise you on the road? Wouldn't an M3 be a sweeter handler? - £30k would get you a used E46.

Life after an M5? Porsche 911 surely.....

Tin,

Your right mate. I'm shooting myself in the foot with that price , but I need the space and the cash, as a house move is imminent. They are genuine ones too, and you could just about get two fronts without tyres from BMW for the same price as I want for all 4 with Dunlop rubber.

Still, they haven't gone yet, but fingers crossed........

Nice bloke, yes, nice thread that has'nt turned into the usual 'm3/Porsche/M5 is for puffs, because nothings as good as a Scoob'type insults.
I think there will be more and more Scoob/Evo owners turning to M5s etc as we get 'a little older' and need a little more comfort but also love power.
Dapster,I d'ont need the extra space but around where I live M3s seem to be driven by slightly unsavoury looking types so I d'ont really like the image. Before anybody slags me off I am NOT saying that ALL M3 drivers are drug dealers(just some ,LOL!)

P1 Scooby, thanks for the info. I'm suprised you found the BMW to have a higher quality interior I always thought it was vice versa.
How did you find the steering feel/responsiveness of one versus the other?

Many thanks,Deep.

si : Zonda's are really nice, but just alittle out of my league

UKType : good comments mate, most probably the 2 bad RS4 examples I came across, what do you drive now?

nicebloke : cheers for asking the q!

Dapster : yep, a nice porsche... best of both worlds, cross between a M5 and a P1 solid build quality with some serious power punch

Matt : Goodluck with the sale, you could always try ebaying them, to reach a wider audience..

Deep Singh: The steering/responsiveness of the RS4 wasn't very good, it just didn't give enough feedback, whereby in "sports" mode (car changes with sharper steering and engine rev's more freely) on the M5, its alot better, precise, smooth. I could have just come across a couple of bad RS4's.. its just my honest opinion..

My little bro had a very nice S3, the steering was very similar on that too... I'm yet to test drive a RS6, but will do soon..

Yes, I could have easily gone for a M3 coupe etc, but like you there are one too many of them around where I live, M5's are alot more rarer and stealth looking.. (plus more power), I still do miss the rawness of the p1, however I must have "grown up" alittle going for more refined car. I don't really need the extra space either, but it certainly comes in handy, and alot more easier for my passengers..

cheers

Tin
