Actually I've heard that Autobhan do a 450bhp/500lb ft for just £6000!...making it quicker than a 993 Turbo!
I too have thought about replacing the Pulsar with a 944 Turbo, hopefully next year or so, we'll see.

There was little difference between the S and the '89 Turbo. The Silver Rose (the true S) had a thinner windscreen and no sunroof - that's it. I haven't seen a true S with leather but I nearly bought a black one and there are other colours about. From '90 the wheels, suspension and rear spoiler changed (only the spoiler for the better).
I've never heard of 450bhp for £6,000 (and trust me, I've looked). Autofarm did a Silver Rose that was in 911 & Porsche World a few months ago and I bet it cost over £6k for that engine and was probably putting out much the same as Davyboy's car. They will do 500+bhp but as Jeff says you need to increase capacity (about 350 is probably the limit for a 2.5). The stroker kit uses an S2 crank and custom rods / pistons for 2.8 litres. You can also use the S2 block for 3.0 or overbore that slightly for 3.2, but there is lots of work in that conversion to make waterways line up with the head.
ALL Turbos had climate control and power windows, only the S had no sunroof. Bizarrely all the S's I've seen have cloth non-sport seats in the 'Studio' tartan fabric matching the colour of the car, but logically somebody must have ordered leather...
I've run Turbos for well over 50,000 miles as well as 30,000 in S2's and I'd agree on the turbo head gasket being a weakness - more linked to age than mileage. The turbo had uprated engine mounts so they fail far less often than the reputation says they will. ALL turbos have weak wastegate springs because the design is poor. There are aftermarket designs for around £450 exchange that work much better.
I think Cridfords are OK - I've looked at cars there but never bought one. The price is fair to high for a specialist and I honestly think you'd get better for £10k - it doesn't look like it has sports seats for instance. I wouldn't even think about the 968 above the Turbo - why pay 50% more for 25% less car?

RB5....if you actually look inside a 'proper' Silver Rose it doesn't have electric windows or air-con.
I ran my 944 Turbo for 60K and had 2 sets of engine mounts during that time. The heat from the turbo kills the turbo side mount and the whole engine drops down that side.

Sorry Jeff but that's just totally wrong. I know 3 Silver Rose owners (and 1 ex-owner) so I have seen plenty of the cars. I also nearly bought one. All had elecric windows and climate.
As I said I've never had a mount go, and not many of the turbo boys on the forums have either - lots of early Luxes do though. it's still a weakness, but not one of the most common ones.

Morning all. Well, went to see the car yesterday and was very impressed. From what I could tell, the bodywork all appears to be original and is unmarked. There is a huge wad of service history, old MOTs, fully stamped up book to support the mileage (86k). The leather interior is in very good condition with no rips, and it does have sport seats. The previous owner had it for about 6 years, having bought it originally from Cridfords and has just pxed it back with them for a 911, so presumably he has had no problems with them. He had most of the service work carried out at Autostrasse, including a rebuilt turbo - dont know why. There is no mention of a headgasket so I suppose that is something I need to bear in mind and budget for.
If anything, the car has done too few miles recently, having only done a few k per year for the last 2 or 3 years, but has certainly been looked after. It even still has the original cassette player (but not for much longer).
I am going to get the car inspected by the local Porsche agent and subject to that will probably go ahead with it.

It seemed very good - I didnt drive it myself but will do so before buying obviously. The roads were wet and slippery but I was impressed with the way it handled.
The car is going to AFN on Friday for a full inspection and if all goes well I will be picking it up middle of next week.
I am tempted to replace the wheels, but may not bother - the ones on it are totally unmarked and it has almost new F1s on.
The first thing will be to replace the stereo and upgrade the standard Porsche alarm. The next investment may have to be a driving day as it is a few years since I drove a powerful RWD car!

Dont forget to have a look at http://www.titanic.co.uk/944/ & join the mailing list.
It has been a very good source of information for me.
Just keep an eye out for wheels - mine came from a fellow 944 list memeber.
.....I always keep an eye on ebay too, I have got some great (or sad) stuff off their, like an orginal 944 turbo brochure!

I'll get signed up. Thanks for all your help. I think I have found myself a pretty decent car, so long as the AFN inspection doesnt reveal anything nasty. The amount of documentation with the car, including original handbooks etc suggests its been well cared for. Unfortunately I am not getting the 944 number plate with it as the previous owner wants £1500 for it!
Just got to wait til the middle of next week now!

nice vid I will definitely have to get the Porsche out on a track soon. Never bothered with the Subaru due to expense but it seems like the Porsche should take less of a hammering, and parts are cheaper. Perhaps that is the excuse I need to get another set of alloys!
Am just waiting to hear from AFN today, who are doing the inspection. Fingers crossed!

well I have just bought a Porsche! The inspection came back to reveal that the calipers need refurbing all round, a bush on the steering column needs replacing, horn doesnt work, and one fog light lens is cracked. Cridfords are happy to sort all this out.
The overall verdict from the inspection is that this is a very good car, and that Cridfords are a reputable company.
Chuffed to bits. What a nice birthday present to myself!

Nice one!
I had the chance of buying a nice 968CS a few years back but decided to buy a house instead. I still really like the 944/968 series and you`ve got a lot of car for the price of a new Ka!

I would be interested to see what they say if you ask them if you are covered for track days with the policy.
They said yes to me when I had picked my chin up off the floor I asked them to put it in writing...3 days a later, a nice letter turns up confirming what they told me.
Others do not appear to have been so lucky

cheers chaps. Re the trackday insurance - it does seem to be a bit of a grey area. I will double check and see if I can get it in writing from Liv Vic. This is going to be a long week while I wait to pick the car up.
