My thoughts on octane boosters

Hi guy's, just an observation about NF.
Not knocking it (no pun intended!), I have used it a lot in the past. Just beware the orange coating this stuff leaves all over the place. You will start to see it where it has run down the side of the petrol filler. It seems to coat anything it touches, particularly lambda sensors. They will need to be cleaned very frequently. If anyone is using this and about to change a downpipe, take the opportunity to see how it coats the inside of the turbo, particularly the impellor blades. What's it doing to other internals? Any such coating cannot be good IMO.
I have used all the top brands and, believe it or not, have settled on good ole' Wynn's. This also claims 2 full RON improvement and has compared favourably in comparison tests.
My modded mota runs fine, knocklink stays quiet and it's not too expensive. Pity it's reputation is more 'boy racer' than serious performance, I think it would sell more!
BTW, after a couple of months of use it also got rid of the orange mess the NF left!!!
All IMHO of course.
Steve.

Well, according to the official Millers website, a 250ml bottle of booster does raise the rating by 2RON, ie 98RON to 100RON.
Foot_Tapper found the same info earlier.

Extract from text I found on Millers Oils website;
'Points' or 'RON'?
Steve.
Millers Octane Plus is a power boost petrol treatment which improves the octane rating of premium or super plus unleaded fuels by up to 2 octane points.

Here in Greece we have finally received a new fuel from BP. It's called BP Ultimate and guess what! It's 100RON.
The new fuel (from what I read) will be distributed throughout Europe in the next few months. Greece was the first country to receive it due to being the host of the coming Olympics.
No more octane boosters for me.

Cheers,
George.

Father Xmas, (I feel like I should be writing a list now...)
I used it continuously over 7 - 8 months, like I said, its a good product. But the build up of the orange 'stuff' started to bother me. Then I had the d/p changed, uprated plugs etc. The stuff was everywhere. I just got the feeling that there must come a point where this reduces overall performance at component level ie. plugs, lambda, intercooler, turbo all not working at their best. So I stopped using it. As a respected performance specialist keeps telling me, "for every advantage there's a disadvantage". (see Dave, I remembered!)
I since spent a fortune trying all the usual suspects including those named in this thread and as I said, settled on Wynn's! Very clean, works every bit as good IMO & includes valve seat protector like the Millers VSP. Btw, its about £3.00 - £3.50 bottle that treats up to 60 litres, approx 5p litre for cars with cat fitted. Max dosage is a bottle to 30 litres for decat which is what I run.
Not a direct answer for you but I hope it helps!
Steve.

Hi, I have just bought a fuel-cat. Have you ever heard of one, if so what are your views on them. I have been told it will make the octane up to 99ron. Secondly where do you get this RN Race Formula from (just in case this fuel cat thing is a waste of time)

is this the broquet fuel cat?
i tried sum research on them when i 1st got mine but got no where, apaerntly the p1`s have sumthing simmiler in there tank to help with knocking?

I second that Tunnel M, i tried millers and proboost and they both did not make much difference on the detting front.
My friends car Parts co. started stocking the Wynn's stuff so i thought i would give it a try and found it to be much better than the previous two.
So much so that Pavlo mapped my car using Wynns (my choice), i returned the next day for some further tweeks (on std optimax) and he could tell on the det cans that i was using plain fuel.
He had mapped the car with Zero det the day previous.

It has just changed..
When iused to use it it was called Octane plus (iirc)
Now it is called +10 (plus ten)
Rob
unfortunately i sold the scoob a while back and have to use race fuel in the Skyline so i no longer use OB.

Btw: Optimax leaves the same 'orange powder' behind.
I'm not convinced it does anything nasty to anything.
It's pretty typical of boosters, I think. There's a limited number of chemicals that can be sold as boosters, and it just so happens that one of the good ones leaves this stuff.

StickyMicky, from http://www.broquet.co.uk I think there is/was a deal in the Scoobyshop as well. Bob Rawle also runs then, as do Subaru in the P1. Some people rate them as snake oil. Do a search.

John, purely out of interest, have you advanced your timing with the Broquet, without NF?? everyone has there own opinion of them and i would be most interested if you say they deffo work.

a small thing i noticed tonite
i finnaly did a ecu reset yesterday and gavce the car a fresh dose of nf, i stuck to 50ml/tank and noticed even better gains
now on the way home tonite there was sum empty roads
so i had a ickle play and now my car is holding more boost then b4, admitidly its a small amount but this should show that the car has advanced the timing a touch to take in the new higher octane fuel
peak stayed the same @ 1.35ish bar but held bar is now 1.15 where as it used to be 1.08 to 1.10

FAO S.B. Sorry didnt see your post earlier

Here : http://www.millersoils.co.uk
On the Red banner at bottom of page, click on Motorsport; then scoll down, in "other products", CVL & Octane plus.
Octane plus :
• Enhances performance by increasing octane values typically by 1.6.
• 97 super plus unleaded typically increases to 99 octane.

In tank version.
I did advance the timing 2 degrees and it did not det. However, det thresholds move for all sorts of reasons so I didn't have the ability to do a proper controlled experiment. Subaru must have a reason for using them on the P1 I guess.

And in quite a few other Imprezas as aside from P1s, John. In essence as added protection to the ravages of European spec 95 Ron.
Also used as an octane booster by Gary Passingham in his 547 bhp Skyline.

For car spec see www.gtart.co.uk - hit the Skyline link.
To clarify there is a product called Fuel Cat which is similar to Broquet (and a bit cheaper) but is not associated with Broquet in any way.
Bob Rawle tested Broquet and said:
"My conclusion is ... engine runs more smoothly, fuel consumption improves in like for like driving situations, performance may be increased if programmable management is used. In short it's a benefit and worth the money IMHO."
I would be happy to e-mail Bob's full post if anyone is interested.
