Shrek,

When did I ever say that I have fitted roll cages?

When I talk about experienced and respected scoobynetters, i refer to the likes of those in this thread who DO know what they are talking about and have 15, 20, 25 years experience in rallying etc.

When you come back with a derogatory comment like that which has no relevance whatsoever, how do you expect me to treat all scoobynetters the same??

It's clear there are helpful people and just plain idiots on this site.

If you want to make any more comments about myself, I openly invite you to mail me directly and we can sort it out away from Scoobynet.

If you have no inclination to do this, please refrain from ridiculous, unfounded comments like your previous one.

Thank you.

ok ok
is there a version of this book online?
Nope, unfortunately. £20 from the MSA, although make sure you get the 2003 edition - seems as though John F has been sold a pup!

and all the bars have a high density foam padding on them
They'll still be more than hard enough to hurt you. The FIA regulation "foam" is something like two inches thick, and even that is only designed to take the sting out of an impact with a helmet. Your skin and skull isn't anywhere near as durable, although I'm sure your northern bones are stronger than us southern "gimps"?

and the car is NOT being built for comp use, its a daly driver that will see the odd track day and som drag strips
Which brings us back to my original point - why do you need the cage in a "daily driver"? Put the cage in when you go to the track if you think it'll help, as as least then you'll be helmeted. The rest of the time, it does you no good at all (unless impressing idiots at "cruises" counts) especially if you don't even bolt it in properly...

when i wrote "the cage is in and its staying in" it was at that moment in time fully built in the car, but it was not bolted to the floor for reasons i have allready given
If it's not bolted down, what do you think is going to happen in a side impact? Do you think the bars will just magically stay where they are, held with some invisible glue?
As has been said elsewhere, if you roll without the cage secured to proper load-spreading floor plates, it'll just go straight through the bottom of the car, bringing the whole shooting match down on top of you.

give over with this "dont u think sum large metal tubing could hit you in a crash", ****e
Why, you don't think it could? Imagine someone throwing it at you at 60mph. You don't think that would hurt? That's what happens in a crash, anything not bolted down keeps going at the same speed.

ffs do u think im botherd if i drive down the road with a 28" telly on the back seat of the car while delivering it? that could "kill" me as well although its unlikely and it wouldnt stop me from doing it
You could always put the TV in the boot, as at least then you'd have the rear seats to dissipate its energy, or if nothing else take some of the sting out.

In any case, you don't drive round with a 28" TV in the back of your car all the time, do you? The longer you have that hoop sitting in the back of your car, the greater the statistical likelihood of you being involved in a shunt. Why don't you just take it out? None of us will notice!

Incidentally, have you phoned your insurance company yet? If we can't convince you that this is a bad idea, the fact that they could more than double your premium, or even not cover you at all, just might.

'It's clear there are helpful people and just plain idiots on this site.'

Agreed.

'If you want to make any more comments about myself, I openly invite you to mail me directly and we can sort it out away from Scoobynet.'

WTF how old are you?? As if i would be bothered to mail you over a pathetic matter like this??? You must take this all too seriously getting worked up over my comments. Get out more mate.

All i said was you sounded pompous with those comments. Sticky Micky can do what he wants without your slating. Perhaps he is more in the know...who knows and to be frank who cares.

no one on this thread has at anytime slated micky he asked a question and got the advice of some very au fait people,
grease monkey, john and myself to name 3.
for some strange reason we must care about him and i personal would feel some guilt if i had not shared my experance with him.
to make a proper decicion it helps to have differant views and
i agree it is his choice
i have been e- mailed about fitting a cage in a few scoobynetters cars and have declined for all the reasons on the thread, when i could have charged a few hundred quid each for doing it.

I also speak from experance i had much the same talk with my dad about fitting a rollcage in my rs 2000 ,my cage was weilded in fitted properley and did comply with the reg's of the day , all was ok till scooby Mcrae here bouyed with indistrucedable confidence was driving far to fast(was only 18)through the cheshire countryside and colided with a milk tanker , cracked my skull into 4 bits broke my jaw and my nose as i hit the rollcage
and no the cage did not stop me dying, ford had already designed the car to do that, the police man at the time said my injures were soley down to the cage .

i can fit a cage to my car for cost , don't you think if i thourght for one second it would make it a safer place to be for me and my childern i would have fitted one?

You can get foam that stiffens the more its compressed which gives a good degree of decelleration.

Im still not sure how hitting your head off a suitably padded tube is any different from hitting you head of a normal A/B pillar?

makeing sure i was happy, to know where to start drilling holes
and one of the bars fell on my head!

my 28" tv does NOT fit in my boot
would it have been better to strap it to the roof or sumthing?

Just curious, and you may already have said earlier, but are you getting re-inforced mounting plates welded in ?

Don't forget to phone your insurance company before you start getting bits and pieces custom made Mickey.

Would be a bit unfortunate if you went to all that trouble only to find either they won't cover you at all or you couldn't afford the premium

Give it a break will you? That piece of advice has been offered, by you & others, more than once. If he choses to accept/action it or not is up to him. But your continually posting it in the way you do is more than a bit antagonistic, so please don't.

You do have a point m8, but it would be nice to know if they cause a premium hike or if it's another urban myth.

After all some of us are not in a postion to mod our waggons regardless of the financial consequences

My mods have all recently been lo-cost & minor Something to do with having to allow wife to run bank account when I walked out of my last job Meant that my secret credit card couldn't be used

Anyhow, I think its a given that it will affect to some degree your insurance premium. I'll be asking mine by how much & will advise accordingly.

Had a friend who stuffed his rally car backwards into a tree at about 100mph

the roll cage helped by the fully welded chassis meant that EVERY panel on the car was in some way distorted.
I suspect a lot of the increase in premiums will be due to this.

I know a senior underwriter with one of the top insurers in the UK, hes on hols at the moment, but I will ask him when he returns if he can provide the insurers view of a roll cage in a road car.

Talking

I am now getting tired of this thread so a point maybe has to be agreed that no one can agree there is those that do and those that dont. Since listening to all sides and having my two pence worth before I think Mickey should install his cage and like it as at the end of the day like he said he aint going competition rallying or anything. and the other thing it wont kill anyone outside of the vehicle unless driver makes a mistake. I would suggest that Mickey get some good solid plates to the floor and dont place too much confidence in the cage protecting you in an accident although like you said it will once fitted with correct plates and padding add another dimension to the cars accident behaviour. whether it be good or bad. The only true way to solve this colourful debate is an expensive one that we would all but Mickey like to see and that would be to crash test the car in proper controlled consitions. Anycase the other point is that if the car is going to be used for genuine motorsport events the car will be disqualified by the Scrutineering team for an improper competition cage. I would add that to me a cage would be a nightmare to live with as obviously it would be something else to bang your head on and not to be able to use the sun visors in the winter would be a nightmare.

I think the Jap Street racers use the cages because they are extremely easy to lift in and out, those little jap guys are very short so are even further away from the roof lining lol (No Offence intended)and if you are going to have an impact at over 200mph then you are pretty well dead wether you got a cage or not. Just one thing that we should all be concerned with is That Mickey does tell his insurance so us other motorists arent paying for uninsured drivers on the road and thats the way it should be left.

Everyone please all drive safe and remember its never an accident its always someones fault.

My insurance company only wanted another £45 for my cage in my sunbeam. I think i must have got a good deal!

If the rally car hit the tree backwards at 100mph cage or not, i'd imagine the whole car would distort badly. Thats a lot of energy to diserpate and i dare say the tree wasnt keen on moving.

I really really really cant spell!
