----- Gruppe Buy Stainless Headers Part 2 -----
#242
I only had one issue with using this.
I lost the first one while out mapping the car shortly after fitting everything. there are two possible reasons for this , first is I may not have tightened it properly as apart form fitting the headers and up-pipe we had also fitted a turbo, fpr, fmic, aps wing CAK,gauges, brakes and mapped the car in the same weekend. the other possibility was I had tightened it but the alloy washer had failed with the heat.
either way the second has worked fine but without the alloy washer.

Alan you will need the blanking plugs, better to be safe than sorry. Go to subaru and see if they have any bolts that fit the thread, or any nut and bolt place really.

Is a single thickness of wrap enough, or do you go over again? ie: Double thickness. Bought 30m of the stuff, and don't reckon I'll need it all! (I'll do the Downpipe if any left over!

Here are a couple of pictures showing how hot they get !! The EGT's were in the 680C's, measured pre turbo.

The quality of the pic' isn't too good, and they're actually glowing a translucent orange.
No infared, just a simple Nokia 7250, and a skateboad........ Second pic' was taken at night, that's why it looks brighter. (lies through teeth)
It glows pretty much to the turbo, but the D/P is "relatively" speaking, much cooler, with the turbo absorbing a lot of energy/heat.
The "glowing" area still needs to be wrapped, and was radiating an incredible amount of heat (thought the 7250 was going to melt Radiated heat from the wrapped areas were pretty low.

Nice 1 - has it got any louder?
If the weather is good probably going to do mine next weekend.
Any tips or gotchas to lookout for?
Also where did you get your M12 bolt from to block up the hole on the up-pipe?
I'm having trouble getting hold of one with the correct fine pitch.
I found a wheel stud that fits but i dont really want to use that.
Cheers

Richard Abby fitted the headers at my place last night. Like he says they were a bitch to fit! I got the holes in the pipes welded at work. The car does sound slightly louder a tlow revs and still sounds like a true scoob, but once the revs start to rise it sounds awesome Well worth the effort of messing with rusty heat shields, sticking bolts etc.. Oh and it would have fitted perfectly first time if i'd tightened ALL the nuts onto the head studs!

LOL - I was saying knackers to this just putting the wrap on
I've got a keen wannabe mechanic to help out with a nut splitter just in case.
What torque and tightening sequence did you use on the heads?
Cheers

Alan, no probs, sure you will return the favour soon.
Re the fitting, no problem to be honest, took about 1 hour 30 min to fit headers, downipe and replumb intercooler etc.
Re the removing, well thats another story TBH, near to a record for time taken!! about 6 fecking hours to remove intercooler (sti 5 on a MY97) remove downpipe and remove headers!
Took 1 hour to get the 3 lower nuts off, 2 with studs still attached. So after approx 3 hours (1 hour to wrap) we had the downpipe off.
Lunchtime beckoned so Alan went the short distance to burger king whilst i started on the headers. No heat shield on passenger side, great, heat shield on drivers said, 2 mins and off.
After lunch, attack up pipe to turbo,2 bolts come off easy, then ****, 1 eventually cracked on came off after about 5 mins of trying, the 2 that sit on the wastegate side well if i could swear
In the end had to angle grind the beggars off!!!
So its now approaching 1:30 (started at 9am) and we still have not got the headers off!
Headers, all 6 studs come out easy then when to seperate the up pipe and headers, both nuts are already rounded, so no hope even trying. Jack engine up, lower whole headers enough to get to bolts with angle grinder and off they come.
Up pipe then removed, and then fit the new headers and reinstall DP and intercooler.
All finished at about 4:30, then the test run to check for any problems.
Worth doing it to see smile on Alans face once he found an open road
Veyr pleased with noise of the car, boxer beat is there at idle and on drive, noise is excellent above 4500.
All Alan has to do now is wrap the last section, as he did not have enough wrap, and check his oil sensor in the sump plug, as it appeared damaged when i looked under the car.

I finally got round to fitting the headers & up-pipe last night.
A fairly easy job in all honesty, and only took 2 hours in total.
Very pleased with the results, the car seems to "breathe" more easily and pulls much better. The car seems to rev much quicker as well. Very, very pleased with the results.
A very worth while mod.
