mycroft - don't be a to$$er - obviously he's going to stick up for his family. You cant help yourself can you ?
Absolutely no need for you to post that.
Chaz - it should never be "expected" that one human being does this to another.

Medders - wrong gender
Currently the unmarked police cars in my area are far more powerful cars than the ordinary beat cars. A few traffic ones are Carltons/Omegas etc - but I cant really see a people carrier [which are fairly popular police cars here] doing much to chase and stop drivers committing offenses!

It makes me mad that people find it big and clever to diss the police force. My daughter has been pushed, punched, kicked, spat on, p*ssed on, been verbally abused in carrying out her duties - just who is the filf, pigs and scum in that scenario then?
This is not a complaint?
Here's a bigger spade for you:P

Have a shovel mate, is bigger than a spade - you can dig yourself a bigger hole or maybe you should hire a JCB - I said it makes me mad that the police are called names when they are subjected to that sort of abuse - meaning....shouldn't it be the perpetrators who should be referred to as that??? The boot on the other foot scenario! It was a comment not a complaint!!

Back on topic...
Now we can all carp from the sidelines... but let us pretend that for a short while each of us had the chance to control the Policing of the Countries roads... what would you do differently... this is not a take the p!ss opportunity for all and sundry... put your real considered ideas to print...

I'd put all the traffic Police back on motorbikes like they used to be, less comfy for em, and I make sure it was the same old Triumph twins anol

Jye, that is some story mate. If you had done half of what the police did that night you'd be typing that message from within the walls of one of Her Majesty's finest and yet all they have to do is apologise - is it any wonder people hate the police.
Anyway to get back on topic I'm convinced that there is a place for unmarked cars for the detection of certain crimes, but round Manchester at least they do seem to spend the majority of their time stopping speeding motorists on the motorway network which frankly does seem to me not to be the best use of an unmarked car.
I myself got stopped by one of them about 2 years ago and I was up front admitting the offence and even giving them an accurate top speed when asked. What got me was the 20 minutes of patronising, belittling and general unpleasantness I got from them despite the fact that I remained polite throughout. Oh and then they were also economical with the truth on their statement - surprise, surprise.
In the last ten years I have gradually lost confidence in the police force in general due to their selective enforcement of the laws of the land and the way they choose to enforce those laws (e.g. how they choose to use unmarked cars).
The speeding event above finally put the icing on the cake for me - not because I was stopped or even charged (I was breaking the law and I accept that), but due to their attitude and conduct.
I'm now so disillusioned I wouldn't cross the road to pi55 on a copper if he/she were on fire.

First, all Gatsos' would be moved to Junctions with Traffic signals... first offence you get 20hrs at the nearest hospital as floor cleaner in the A&E Dept... second offence the same but 6 points on your licence... third time... banned, automatic 1 year.
Gatsos can be fitted with 'crash alert' microphones, any crash will produce a sound signature so if an accident occurs they fire also, again the greatest incidence of 'hit and run s is at these junctions... this simple cheap measure would save lives and in the case of the H&R give the police a good clue for the majority of incidents.
Second, the speed limit on M'ways taken to 100mph.
During the hours of 6am to midnight, a simple barrier toll on all entrances from midnight to 6am allows lorries to travel at upto 80mph and cars to travel at 'unlimited' speeds... for a fee... the saving in haulage time would pay the hauliers back for the additional cost for night drivers, the speed artists pay for 'their fun' Motorways only.
Third, in town 30/40/50mph restructured to quiet periods... again similar hours to the above but simple '+20mph' applies... so 30 zones have 50mph limits after midnight to 6am and so on.
Fouth, dense residential estates exempt from this... all areas like that to be made 'traffic awkward' chicanes used not humps... humps cause to much noise... chicanes with Trafco High kerbs will 'kerb' the most enthusiastic of boy-racers...
These areas can apply for sump crushers for entry points... another simple stop!

How can you judge all coppers, based on one experience? Beyond belief that is, or an extremely asinine comment.

Have to agree with you on most points Mycroft, correct me if I am wrong, but dont most coaches, lorries and hgv's have limiters fitted to about 55-60mph? Are these limiters adaptable?

Cheers Tiggers, I still have the original letter my mother wrote to the Chief Super (shes good at these things )and his 'humble' reply. I keep them as usually no one believes me that 'some' Police actually dostill use these sort of heavy handed tactics.

Some nice ideas there mycroft. Maybe your not such a ****
Dont agree with the 30mph limit stopping at any time though. Its always a built up area and there are always people there / animals etc etc.
But we'll probably agree to disagree there

Sorry Jason I have edited my post for greater clarity [I hope]... please re-read.. Ta.
Yes , governors can be over-ridden...
I would add that your car has to have a special MOT for the 100+ runs... it lasts just 6 weeks... you buy the 'ticket to speed at the cop shop... you pay to drive fast but in a much more controlled manner...
You can't just shove money in to get on the Motorway at that time... the other bit i like is that when you go to pay the Police then have to opportunity to give the car a once over and make eye-contact... trust me... human nature will mean that respect is gained if the man in uniform helps the car owner not punishes him or says i don't like the look of that tyre... get it sorted and come back tomorrow... you will respect him...

Would not the driver have to have some sort of test to see that they are capable of driving a car at this speed? There must be 1000's of drivers who have a car capable of this speed but their owners have never been over 70mph.

Sorry, I have already posted that we should now have a 2 stage licence... I should have mentioned it in this thread... this option would only be available to those with stage 2 complete.

Medders, you're a policeman... would you feel that people would hold you in higher regard if they felt you were actually safeguarding their interests not just a tool of the State?
I think you do traffic duty so wouldn't you love to actually have a quick shufty at the occasional car and advise people in the cop-shop car park rather than through gritted teeth on the side of a M'way after a simple fault has shut the damned road or worse still killed people through wrong tyre pressure/condition?

Redkop,
As a moderator I thought you might actually read the posts properly before commenting, however it seems I am wrong.
My opinion is not based on one experience as it quite clearly states in the post - if I had time I could list out the 10 or so other examples that I have personally been involved with where the police have utterly failed to do what they are paid for.
Then there are the thousands of others you read/hear about which even if only a small percentage are true is still a sad indictment of our country's policing.
Take Jye's experience for example - luckily no-one got hurt, but only by luck - those coppers should have lost their jobs at the very least if not have been arrested and charged themselves - that's never likely to happen though is it now?

Mycroft - I think peoples regard for the police is partly to do with this and media twisting etc .....
i doubt this would change many peoples view of the police, unjustified or not.
When you say tool of the state - do you mean "revenue generator"
as all public servants are "tools of the state" to some degree?
As you know (cos i've told you many times) I dont generate revenue...so you dont think that of me do you

tiggers you dont have any extra special attributes just because you are a moderator - we are human like everyone else on this bb. I thought your comment was way too harsh in context with your disillusionment and another figure of speech would have been more appropriate, plus you are judging all coppers to be the same.
