Sorry 4 the delay in my resonse fella's havnt checked the boards 4 a while.

Jim, im using 4 computers at home, all linked through a switch.
1 x P4 2.533 GHz on 845PE chipset.
1 x AMD Athlon 2400+ on nForce 1 chipset

There are so many P4 / Athlon arguments i figured ill have both of them :-)

1 x P2 300MHz (laptop)
1 x Celeron 300A (Linux and test machine, red hat dont need the HUGE resorces that windows does)

My average times are made MUCH worse than they could be because im running the celeron and laptop.

I might go back to running just the high end machines (well, mid range now !!) on a 24/7 basis like i used to. Would be good to see if i can make the average times under the 3 hour mark. You have to be running the command line version to get these times though, you wont do it with the screensaver version.

Question

Any suggestions for speeding up my Pentium PC's running Win98? - 100-200hrs/WU is a bit extreme

Are you running the command line version or the screensaver?

The CL knocks out work units quicker because it's not got the graphics overhead to cope with.

If you're running the screensaver, you can set it to go to blank screen after X minutes, which again removes the graphics overhead.

John.

(Corrected spelling).

Angry

how the hell have i only had two units done?? i leave my computer on all the time so it's had plenty of chance to do loads of units. i noticed on our team list that i've used 142 hours and had 2 units complete and scooby jim, you've only done 96 hours and got 19 units complete. HOW THE HELL DOES THAT WORK????

i know my computer isn't the fastest in the world, will that have something to do with it??? i thought this because it takes mine 71 hours for one unit and you 5 hours

How do you run the command line version under windows or is that a Unix only version?

Win32 command line version is downloadable from Seti

To get it running all the time, the best route is to install it as a service usung srvany.exe - I found instructions via Google.

Question

ScoobyGav - same question as P1Fanatic, what is your spec??

I am running: 2.66 P4, 512MB RAM, Windows XP, Normal Windows SETI version (not CMD line). So I guess if I ran the command line then I could be quicker . I don't have the PC on 24hrs either only when I am online usually. My old Celeron 500, 64MB RAM used to pump out one WU per 15 - 20 hours....

Cool

The Best way I have found to get it running FAST is to goto settings in the screensaver settup, and set to go to blank screen after ONE minute, the other thing I've found is that if running it all the time to hoggs the processor, so don't use a Sh!te one if you do. I have a 2000xp AMD wuth 512MB Ram

The best way i've found to run it is to use SETIDriver with the command line seti@home program, which caches a selected number of work units, and makes sure that the computer always has something to do until its worked through all the cached units.

Mine 2.4 P4 does 5 or 6 units a day, (on about 18 hours/day).

John.
