As I said on one of the early threads my kuk sool grading will seperate the men from the boys in terms of energy foods. I'm in induction at the moment and my next grading is on Sunday. It will be two hours of bodily hell and I'll be punished none stop. They actually WANT you to get to the point where your head is trying to keep you going but the body has given up. If I survive the two hours then believe me atkins has more than enough energy to allow you to do anything Equally if I physically can't continue after 20 mins I'll report that too.

Well I finally start today after getting the necessary food yesterday. GF and parents don't think I can last a day without a beer especially as the fridge is full of them. They can wait.
Will see what happens.
Oh and found in Marks and Spencers that the classic french dressing found in the salad cabinets has virtually no carbs in it and its great on salad so plenty of chicken salads without them being hideously bland
Todays menu
No breakfast as up at 5am (same all week)
Coffee with single cream and two of those sweetner things (was disgusting but at least its caffeine and better than black coffee)
Lunch is Thai chicken pieces (3.2g carbs for whole pack) and lettuce, cucumber and french dressing.
Dinner is cod fillet with brocolli and cauliflower with a dolop of Sainsburys own Brown sauce as its not got many carbs in it for the whole bottle
plus 2-3 litres of water during the day
I can't wait till this two weeks is over!

Sorry boy's I always seem to start a fight
I am in the " its a fad " group.
Atkins is not healthy eating. It almost deprives the body of a vital food group and forces the body to go into carb shock and use body fat as fuel. I have read the books as my G/F tried it, and it is not a sustainable way to lose weight and maintain it. Only low fat balanced eating with low alcohol intake ( which I suspect is the problem with most males between 20 - 50 )and regular exercise is the correct way to maintain healthy body fat levels. Carbs are a vital part of healthy body maintenance and should not be reduced to these levels, even if it is temporary.
All this is IMHO and I am not a dietary expert or health professional.

What makes me laugh about this thread (which I've dipped into a few times) is that a few people (particularly Tiggs) have referred to exercise (e.g., hill-running, etc) as if it's a bane, a torture, and something unpleasant which the Atkins diet allows them to avoid.
I'm not on a diet, not trying to lose weight, and perfectly happy with my physical stature, but I do a lot of exercise - because I enjoy it. I eat about 3,500kcals/day, but remain a constant 12.5-13st.
If you get out there, do something fun (mountain-biking, hiking, footy, swimming, whatever) then you'll stay trim & fit, and can eat WTF you like. Pounding the pavements in a pair of jogging bottoms and a vest isn't fun - it's a nightmare.
The problem most people I know seem to have with exercise is that they don't do something they enjoy, so it becomes a chore. Whereas I'm usually trying to find way out of sitting around doing f-all, so I can pound some trails on the MTB.
Find something you enjoy doing, and do it regularly. Then you won't have to bother scouring the shelves for all this low-carb rubbish, you can just eat what you like, when you like, and you won't turn into a zeppelin. Oh, and unlike with the Atkins diet, you'll feel better, sleep better, and have improved concentration...

Daisy, read the above thread and you'll see that my system seems to be getting superior nutrients and energy on the most severe (induction) phase of atkins than on a normal mainly carb based diet. On this basis and given that I feel fine on atkins (*) I would have to disagree with your comments :
* = granted I'm tired and sore this morning but thats to be expected after the day I had yesterday and the fact I p1ssed around on the net last night instead of going to bed

I agree with comments about long term diet and excersise but that wont help me shift a few pounds quickly for my upcoming holiday, so atkins was quickest way to shift most amount of fat in a short space of time.
Certainly wont keep it going long term, like my beer too much
Will have to get the mountain bike out the garage and actually use it as I can't go long term without piles of potatoes on my dinner plate or a beer every night after getting home from work.
But for a short term fix I don't reckon any amount of excersise that can be fitted in with my working day over the next 4 weeks could shift the amount Atkins is allegedly going to shift.

Bravo, that's a good reason i guess, using it as a crash diet, if it has to be used at all.
But, without being pedantic, be under no illusion that the weight you'll lose so quickly will be fat; it won't. It'll be 90%+ fluid, ie water. Burning fat takes a lot longer than a week or two, unfortunately.

Telboy surely if I drink 3 litres of water a day then that water loss shouldn't take place? So does that mean I am not going to lose any weight at all?
I can't afford to lose water, I'm badly dehydrated as it is after being a desk jockey for the last 5 years and only drinking buckets of coffee and diet coke all day and beer when I get home
This diet is also to make me drink the water that I should have been drinking all along.
I thought you started burning fat with 3-4 days on this diet due to keytones kicking in after the body has used up all the available sugar/carbohydrate and eventually getting into ketosis?

Deffo drink water on this diet. On reduced carbs, there's less glycogen floating around to keep as much water in the muscles, so extra water intake is necessary to counteract this effect. Yes, you'll lose some weight, as we all have excess bodyweight in the form of fluid in our bodies, but not much of it will be fat in the short term.

Hi Daisy here
Once I stop laughing I will get on thread *ahem*
OK I am not saying as a short term measure it would be overly unhealthy.
But long term, say 4-6 weeks it is un healthy.
Your body can only absorb 25g of protein per meal. The body doesn't cope with excess protein well and it can build up as partially digested food in the lower bowel. This can lead to digestive problems and has even been liked with cancer.
Also unless you drink around 3-4 litres of water a day you can get kidney issues as well.
On another point I love exercise and don't see it as a chore. I play footie 4 times a wek during the season and twice a week during the summer. I 2 day interval train in a gym as well and love ever minute. I am 13st and probably half a stone overweight, but fit for my age, 41.
I like walks in the country, films, and have a GSOH, I am fun to be with and a Taurean.

bravo, IMHO, you should just increase your exercise permanently then you wouldn't need to go on the stupid atkins diet!! just eat less and do more exercise!!!!!!
apparently if you stop drinking so much beer, eating cakes, chocolate and ice cream that works too

Ok another quick question or two
Can you have Diet Coke/Pepsi (not loads just the occasional one) cos I have checked the tins and its says 0 carbs, not even a trace? I need the caffeine as I can't make coffee at work without using milk
Also if I am having a really bad sugar crash and feeling feint should i be considering giving up or just see it through and take the chance of falling over , legs went a bit wobbly earlier and I went very light headed while walking round the office I have been very very heavy on sugar intake uptil now and this sudden stop of no sugar whatsoever is having a rather uncomfortable effect on me to say the least
I never knew I was so dependent on the bloody stuff, its like a drug

I started about week ago - i've found the sam ething. Almost instant sugar crash, no energy, continuous headaches. On day 6 though, i've woken filled with energy, no headache for once.
Stick with it. I've lost 4 pound already and feel pretty good!

Bravo, the only problem with Diet Coke/Pepsi is the sweetner they use sometimes has the side effect of slowing down weightloss. Having said that, it is said in the book that if you limit these type drinks to just 2 or 3 a day then you should be ok.

Aviod the diet drinks if you are really hardcore but I personally went with them an accepted it may slow my loss a little.
READ THIS: The first few days (maybe even a week) for most people on Atkins is hell!! You have major withdrawl symptoms from foods you were addicted to. For 24 hours I felt like I had flu All I can say is don't start it unless you are committed to getting through this period. It will pass and sooner or later the weight should start to drop

Cheers, managed with just one can of diet coke today
No **** sherlock on the major withdrawal symptoms, I was obvioulsy addicted to a hell of a lot of different foods
Now sitting down with a plate of lettuce, and sea food mix (prawns, mussles, squid, and scallops) and its yummy and virtually no carbs
After that I've got a chicken madras with cauliflower and brocolli. Again no carbs, just mustn't touch those 16 bottles of beer in the fridge
