but actually it is very silly indeed to do that to 1st gear because Subaru gearboxes ARE made of chocolate buttons and technical Lego.

You think YOU'VE got a chocolate gearbox? You should try the legacy ones...you can feel bits moving around when you stir the stick...oh and the syncros whine on downshifts.......especially shifting into first when not at a complete standstill. Which (given the nice long gear ratios and laggy turbo) means accelerating quickly from any speed lower than 30mph in 2nd gear takes YEARS! And the gearstick throw seems to be about 8 inches.
