I do wonder how long it will be before normal, decent, honest, hard working people start taking the law into their own hands. Yes, that will make them criminals in the eyes of the law - what a situation to be in.
Criminals suing and winning damages against people they have robbed etc.
Judges - some that are that far detached from reality they cannot tell right from wrong.
To few Police to protect and detcet crimes.
Burglars getting let of for thier first offence - This would make a good joke.
I have several mates who i know would back me to the hilt in a jam. I wonder if pushed what i would/could do, i do believe in justice but i also believe that if the law lets you down then you should make your own.

I would favour a 12 bore shotgun if I had cause to do someone some serious damage BUT is there a better way??
Poison on a walking stick could be good?
Befriend your enemy and kill them slowly with some toxic beer??
How would YOU do it?!

I agree totally with what Pete said, and with Norman Brennan. If you go with intent to burgle someone and particularly if you carry a weapon of any kind, then I believe that you have lost any rights.
