I'm not too clued up on that, I find "rules of thumb" tend to be stretched over the years, and this 380cc thing is probably the result of the whole engine. Ferrari model numbers were derived from the cylinder size interestingly, so a 275 has 8 275cc cylinders. It affects the pistons size/weight, stroke, valve sizes etc etc. It has less to do with combustion itself as far as I know.
