Tim W,

Must admit to being slightly confused about the direction the £2billion was going.

I've now read several more articles and reckon you are indeed correct! (until someone else tells me otherwise )

Still can't believe they let Land Rover go.

having looked at the statement from Alchemy Partners (linked from bbc news site) it seem that they will indeed be making cars and not spliting up the company, but from the wording they are looking at making large no's of the workforce redundant. However on the good news side they will be continuing to make the MINI

Thumbs down

come on guys lets get this right.

Alchamy have taken over control of longbridge. The new mini will be made by BMW at cowley. The old mini will still be made by alchamy in longbridge. The rover 75 will be made by BMW but will be owned/sold by alchemy under license so will pick up all the costs/profits.

The alchamy company will be called MG cars and will market the 25, 45, 75 and old mini.

Land rover is being sold by BMW to another USA based company and will be a completely seperate company to MG cars and BMW.

The only car that will be owned by BMW will be the new mini, BMW mini, doesnt sound good to me. Also it is almost certain that rolls royce cars will be moved to cowley aswell under this deal, oh my gawd.;(

BMW are NOT keeping land rover, they are selling it to an unspecified USA based company.

Well I'm well cheddered off tonight ! I suppose a few of you lot know that I have and are mad on mini's. I run a mini club in York and have around 70 members now. I feel like the whole of the country has been conned by the gerries - These are my opinions and I appologize if I offend some people - I know the following is not illegal but it feels like it in my heart - how can BMW (GERMAN COMPANY) buy a BRITISH company who employs 50,000 people - the future of these people is held in the hand of the gerries - surely there is a law against this - what is saying that it is not part of a plan to bring this country to a big depression ? The Mini is as BRITISH as you can get isnt it really ? Its an icon for us and surely a car of the century - they have spoilt this cars history - I know you cant keep ob building this car - it is 40 years old (nearly 41) and has hardly changed from day one (August 11th 1959) how many changes has the Ford Escort had for example ? - The other thing that is annoying me is - how can they keep the name the mini - surely we could make a good looking car and goes like stink and sticks to the road - I dont personally like the new Mini - maybe because I love the present one - ok rant over - I had better get to bed now - seya folks

Phil, we all live in a different world to when the mini was first built.

Governments and coutries no longer have any real power, the big multinational companies rule the world.

End of story

British Leyland should have been put out of our misery back in the 70`s then we wouldn`t have had to watch the painfully unedifying sight of all the years of badge engineering attempts to pass the same old crap on to the public. It was an insult to our intelligence and we all saw through these pathetic marketing ploys, so didn`t buy.

But we certainly paid in our taxes which were used to keep them afloat....

Good riddance I say, lets leave car making to those who can do it. We are a more sophisticated service economy now, and the job losses while regrettable, will be soon mopped up in the emerging industries I`m sure

If BL had "been put out of their misery in the 70's" we would have lost Jaguar and Land Rover as well!

What would TVR and Morgan etc done without the Rover V8 and no K series for the elise - apart from all those who would have been jobless for 30 years!

Who cares a toss for Jaguar or Land Rover?

Old codgers cars and biology teachers` transport respectively.

TVR could have still used the old Rover V8 designs.
