Paul,

Going to look and hopefully drive both this weekend now bugger off ya Civic driving jessie

Scott,

Taking notice - the Skyline is in front at the mo but gotta drive both first!

V5/SS - if thats the vid I think it is - the skyline creams the supra from a standing start, and towards the end the supra reels it in and passes - though those sorts of conditions would never happen in the UK so the Skyline would be quicker point to point I think!
However..........

that is simply stunning!

Now that Supra looks danm fine!

'Civic driving Jessie' eh, just you wait you goat-gobbler!

Plan to get another Scoob once we have moved, may even go for a p1 but interested to see what you can get a Skyline for - Mrs Paul fancies a BM 3 series convertable - oh dear!

P1 and sit on jet ski thing (never remember the proper name) or a ski boat high on my list of new toys when we shift Chez Paul

Who you been speaking to about my fetishes ya weird sheep worrying perve?

LOL @ scoob, you can pick an R33 up for around 15k mate - especially if you can wait and import from Japan - thats what I'm doing and can come in cheaper. You then get a car, similar price to a standard one over here but usually with a few choice mods like bigger wheels, zorst, boost controller etc....... Have a look on Newera's, they've got one under their stock list at the mo, modded to **** and 16.5k OTR in Blighty. LMFAO @ BM 3 series, can't imagine you turning into a 3 series cab woofter to be honest - plus you'll never get out of another junction. Perhaps Scott could help here? bwaaaaaahahahahaha

P1 - nah STi 6 Type R V Lim if you must scoob again! Jet ski idea is a cool one though

I have owned and driven both of the Marques. I have driven them in standard form and both of them when they are running 450BHP.
A supra with the right kit has to be arguably the best looking Jap mobile out there, but you cant mess with the Skylines Race pedigree or massive tunability. What do you want, flash or power?
Skylines handles like a Scoob..... Except bigger and better!
Supras..... Well they go sideways....... Which is fun.

Any questions (or you just want to buy one! ) Mail me as per my profile!

I think the question should be:

Pure driving skill, or pure computer skill

Someone made a comment about the Supra's traction control, this traction control was made in 1993, this is 10 years before! And if you don't like it, switch it off!

When i see a fast car cornering, i say either:
1) Look at the way this bloke corners this car
or
2) Look at the way this car corners.....

I believe there's no need to say which cars are associated with the first comment and which with the second.

Driving pleasure is not associated with absolute speed, you say that you are pleased with a car when you get out of it and say: this car is a bull and i managed to do all these stuff without any help from electronics, driving layouts etc. I would never want a car that makes me look like a better driver than i really am.

I am not saying that the Supra is the absolute driver's car, but it's certainly more challenging than a Skyline. I don't believe in all these: 'RWD until the car slips and then 4wd' or the opposite. A car can be :
1)AWD
2)RWD
3)FWD

I have owned cars with all three types of layout and i have to admit that only the RWD put a smile to my face.

As regrding the Chestwig comments, if that's what's needed to drive a Supra, then i'll prefer tio wear a chestwig than driving a car full of electronics.

In my books, a proper driver's car(apart from the Supra), is the Mazda RX-7. It's not the fastest car, it's not the most reliable, it's not the most comfy, but it's a FECKIN' driver's car.

Why should i want an bigger version of an impreza with a primera interior? Because of the drivetrain? The car must SPEAK to me, must make my blood boil. If i want a nimble 4wd, i can get an impreza or a GT4 or an EVO. If i want a supercar, i'll get a proper supercar, and i'm afraid that this means a RWD to me.

All of the above are just personal thoughts, i'm not saying it to prove someone wrong, i'm just saying to show my thoughts.

Jawa - did you push the skyline...

I'd say a standard one is probably not a very good performance example, but given sufficient revs (ie 8k ) it should still move! As for the handling, on the limit it is nothing like my previous scooby... Oversteer whenever provoked and no understeer, but much more controlled than a scooby. The supra I've extensively driven has similar mods to mine (more boost, exhaust, induction and suspension + brakes) and in terms of performance the skyline had the edge high up the revs and the supra was better at lower revs, of course the advantage is the skyline can be launched at 6k revs hence no problems

Having driven both I couldn't live with Supra, but I do lots of miles and like to cover them extremely quickly The scooby was badly suited to that, and the supra would kill me in the wet!

Anyway I hope you find a nice supra, they are excellent cars (and RLTC does help), but I'll be sticking to the skyline

...but I'm always puzzled by the skyline 'drives itself' type remarks, its by far the most involving 4wd I've tried (including 993 carrera 4)

50mph feels much faster than 50mph in either the Skyline or the Soarer... it is that phenomena that has kept many a Supra driver alive. They are slower, but feel faster... you will be grateful for that the first big snake-up you get... I'll log this thread and keep an eye open on the MKIV site for your first '**** I nearly lost it last night' message... by December of this year you will have scared yourself due to its faulted and well documented snake-hips...

Mycroft - Totally agree... I think the small cabin gives the impression of speed without actually pushing it to hard! As I said earlier, friend with a sup scares himself all the time, but has only bent it once!

Polarbearit,

Yep - I sure did push the Skyline You say a standard one is not the best example, but then the Supra was standard too At the end of the day, I guess the Skyline isn't the car for me, I drove both and preferred the Supra, so to me, that is the more special car. Not really knocking the skyline, it was a nice car, but just seemed to be lacking in something!
LOL @ the supra in the wet - indeed this is something I'll have to be careful of but Racelogic will definately be fitted for this circumstance (oh no computer bits!!) but at least I can turn it off when its dry!
As for the small cabin - I didn't really think it was that small, and according to the speedo, the impression of speed was justified!!!!

Mycroft - LOL!! IMHO the Supra looks far superior to the Soarer, and so IF it was going slower - just gives people longer to look at it You won't see that post from me either - now you've mentioned it I'll never let on

Its always a sore subject this sort of thing. I drove both and preferred the supra, but both are excellent cars in their own rights

Cool - glad you've found a car that works for you...

I guess I since I never considered buying a standard skyline the way they drive in that way was never a consideration! Come to think of it, I've never actually driven a stock Supra actually...

Are you planning the import or UK route? I believe with Sups, that the UK cars are a better base for smallish mods with better brakes, tubs and larger injectors whereas the Jap spec ones have better suspension... Oh and I take it your buying a manual Supra?

Gotta go with Jawa on this one! (And not just so I get a go when he buys one! )

I was only a passenger in the Skyline, but both a passenger and driver in the Supra. The Supra was fecking quick, and felt like a really special car. The Skyline....errr...didn't. After being a passenger in the Skyline, I thought "Yeah, nice car, would be happy with that." Got out of the Supra and thought "Wow". And that was before I got to drive it! Sorry, all IMHO, but that's the way it felt.

To say a standard one is probably not a very good performance example doesn't seem to be a good arguement to me. If you're gonna mod a car isn't the quicker car a better starting point??? The Supras are well known for being able to go to 600bhp without the internals needing changing. Anyhoo...that's for later. (Hint hint, Neil )

Right, off for a beer and a go at convincing my wife we don't actually need a new house! Wish me luck!

Difficult one for me. I like the Supra is its heavily modded. The Skyline looks good as standard.

Hmmm......the Supra for the weekend, and the GTR for daily driving.

Hi Jon

I must say I expected today to really swing it and go with the Skyline but I was honestly really shocked I preferred the Supra.

The car I drove was an auto (I know I know!!!!) and was given the option to drive the manual but turned it down To be honest for the type of driving I'm going to do to work the auto was superb, but still enables fun when you want too. Its just a different style of driving to the Impreza and indeed the skyline.

Not ruled out either UK or Import yet, but I quite fancy the aero which comes as a GZ spec auto, import only. Yeah, the specs as you say are sligtly lower as you say eg injectors and brakes etc, but I've done a little research which say the differences aren't as great as they appear and on the brake front a decent replacement set of pads and discs is good enough on jap spec for road use, only worth upgrading if you do a lot of track days......

As I said, end of the day each to their own, we're all different and like different things. As long as you get out of your car with a smile and like it for yourself, then at the end of the day thats all that matters

Racelogic will not save your ahse when she snake-hips on ya!
(It'll make things worse!)

My advice is to buy an Aerotop... the 'flexi-chassis' makes you drive slower still and you will find less Aerotops in ditches thanks to that built in 'limiter'...

Also I have been told the 'double sided tape' for the 'obligatory' chest wig can't grip after 40mph and those bloody medallions can really hurt a man with a pigeon-chest...

Have fun... well try anyway...

Racelogic will not save you from a powerslide or tailflick as it stops it happening in the first place.

As usual mycroft is talking OOHA as he has never driven a tuned supra with racelogic fitted, he only knows what he has read on the internet.

As I said before, best to ignore what Mycroft posts until he provides decent proof (12.3 1/4 mile...care to tell us where and how that was acheived?)

Sorry to say Bonkers, you don't know what you are talking about, the Torsen will fool any TC unit... it is a well known problem with all TC systems.

The 'snake hips' just happens higher up the speed range and therefore tends to lead to catastrophic crashes rather than the '****-me-pants' moments... the only way to solve this is thru the use of a gyroscopic accelerometers... this sense the sideways step betwixt front and rear and deals with it... I have worked on such a system...

Yes, ignore me, have you still got that bucket of sand by the side of your computer Bonkers?... stick your head in it... ...there's a good chap...

such a shame you just read books and ignore the facts. There have been no problems with RLTC and the mkiv supra. From the 300bhp stock cars up to the 700bhp hks twins it has kept the car under control and never caused a problem 'further up the range'.

Perhaps if you know different you can post the proof. Its like me trying to tell you that the soarer has an inherent design fault in the engine (when infact the fault lies with the old gits behind the wheel)...I dont know the soarer and you dont know the supra.

When you drive a supra day to day for a couple of years and slowly modify it putting various tuning parts on you can have an opinion, but as you havent even come close to doing that then perhaps its time you took your head out of your 4rse and tried it in a bucket of sand.
