It's too appealing not to
I've been driving my 1.6 now for around 4 weeks and whilst the power is fine and you can really thrash the engine, I'm still looking forward to the Mi16 that's being put in next weekend.
I'll let you know how much of a difference it really makes.

its a piece off **** realy but thing is i cant afford a bigger engine and may just neglect to tell the insurance company i have changed the engine. and most garages wont notice when they MOT the car and a 106 engine is far more reliable!!

Never neglect to tell your insurance guys ANYTHING.
They always find out in the end. Imagine you runa kid over, and you yourself are hurt. WHilst in hospital the insurance assessors tow your car away and wil tell straight away where the engine is from - these guys are usually trained mechanics.
Not a good outcome, you could be paying for it forever, just for the sake of 5bhp.
Dont agree on the reliability thing either - they are more sophisticated, more can go wrong.

C, why the desire for big engines?
A 1.6 GTi is a more than capable car. Sounds like you are on a tight budget/struggling with insurance due to age?
Why not get a mint 1.6 and concentrate on making it look good, lower it a bit, some nice wheels, keep it clean. Guy over on the gti forum is selling a real beauty:
Dont bother with engine swaps unless you go the MI16/Carb route.
My plan is to buy a mint 1.9 this year, then when I finally move and buy a house that HAS a garage (after summer - yippee) I will be doing the MI transplant myself.

There is when its sunny mate
I don't think I'd do it, but it does look tidy, would quite like to do the handles. Gotta source the paint first, went to a Peugeot dealer a week or so ago and they said Peugeot no longer supply it for touch up etc
Thing is, I'm intending to keep the the car a loooooong time and keep as standard as it was intended in the first place, so I guess colour coding stuff isn't a good idea, unless I get OEM replacement parts..........

Not a problem DW - I'll post the driving difference up here after I get home with the car.
Cost wise I'm looking at getting a 80k 1.9 16v Mi16 engine supplied - fully fitted (inc. new timing belt + pulleys) + various additional parts (early 3 pc downpipe, H/D rear mount, radiator bracket etc).
Also getting a 309 front end at the same time which gives longer bottom arms + shafts (and hence slightly more negative camber), and a stiffer anti-roll bar, and it will also give 1.9 hubs + brakes.
All in for £1,100 (no VAT) + I'm getting an unlimited mileage 3 month warrenty with the work and engine.
Richard.

Ciaran, I agree with DW, if its a good road car you are after, then Peugeot did a fine job straight out of the box. If you modify, expect to see very little or none of your money back at For Sale time. My 1.9 is 100% standard, and will stay that way. IMHO it needs no improving for my needs.
If its a converted car you need, let someone else spend the money, and then hunt around and buy a complete car. Always the cheaper route, and it does sound like you are on a budget mate.
Probably not what you wanna hear though, I was the same when I were a lad.

My 1.9 is 100% standard, and will stay that way.
My bro in law has a Golf V5 and he's commented on how much speed the pug can carry, while his TC light is flashing away at him
