Quote:so any recommended tuning mods engine wise that is for the 1.6 gti?
Yes ,fit a 1.9 lump into it.I did this after my 1.6 expired.
the 1.9 engine mated with a 1.6 gearbox is a very pleasant experiance
Also,my friend has a full set (5)of 1.9 alloys with p/w tyres that he wants rid of.he wants £60ono for the lot!!he took them off his old car.

I've got a red 1.9, a black 1.6, a graphite 1.6.
Have also had another black 1.6, and a white 1.9
We sort of collect them, but my brother rallies one in the 1.6 205 Challenge, so it's always handy to have them for spares!
Best thing you can do? Strip it out, put a safety devices cage in it, and take it on a track day - soooooo much fun. Would beat my cossie for cornering speed

well iv been saying that for a while that when i get the car anything that is uprated will be to 1.9 spec and ultimatly the engine thing is im rather limited by budget and need to travel 25 miles to college every day so could do with a fairly efficiant car.

You should be fine on the journey. I used to do 150 miles a day in mine for 12 months and it was fine.
Did 45mpg on the motorway as well

well its one of the roads i cant go down at 60 its got huge straights i once passed 9 cars in a row on one of the straights in a 1.9 td xantia and the police never sit on the road eighther i just think iwould never have a 1.9 in petrol and only have about £40 a week to spend on petrol.
How hard would it be to put an mi16 in just out of interest does it drop straight in or do engine mountings need altered? cos i could probably do it myself if its simple?

this should help:
www.mi16conversion.co.uk
RichPON - who do you have your trackday cover with - been quoted 135 per 3k 'on event' cover by Egger Lawson which I think is a bit high, esp as its only got 'safety' mods (saftey devices cage, plumbed in extinguisher, battery cut out etc, decent brakes, Leda suspension) to 750mc stock hatch spec....

well put in the mi16 sounds a bit more difficult and more expensive than i thought guess it will have to wait a we while then does a 1.9 engine drop straight into a 1.6?

from what i remember the 1.9 was a straight swap.i think my mechanic had to mess around with a few wires because i bought a newer engine than my 1.6 one.It connected straight up the the 1.6 running gear though,so that wasnt a problem.
the car was a rocket(for a 17 year old it was!!)
left the rest of the car standard(wheels,1.6 badges etc etc )
it showed many a "hot hatch"up LOL

if you want more horses then don't waste any money on exhausts, induction kits and piper/kent fast road cams. The recommended 'upgrade' by piper or kent usually have less duration and lift than the standard part and can actually Decrease power. Same with exhausts, Peugoet got it right from the start which is what made the car so much quicker than the competition, the zorst is very good, and unless you start running big carbs/throttle bodies l wouldn't bother. If you want induction noise a pair of DCOE carbs is definately a good plan these should earn you about 10 bhp, and allow you to run a fairly wild cam should you chose to. The best way to develop a few usable horses is having bigger valves put in and the head ported and polished.
alternatively you can buy a £70 piece of foam that sucks hot air into the engine and decreases the amount of fuel that the air will usefully combust. Called an induction kit.

Carbs in definitely the way forward, a friend of mine has 2 205's with over 200bhp @ the wheels, both on carbs... Apparently if your going down that route the stock 205 is a better starting engine to the MI16 one...

Cars were both built by www.racepaceonline.co.uk I don't know the full specs, but they are extremely serious with one of the engine builds costing £10k
He's quite a fan of 205's... When I had a Jap spec short geared impreza his road/show 205 was faster in everything but launch (its not faster than 380bhp of GTR though )
Also believe the 8v's produce better torque...

MI16 vs 8v...
Depends what you are looking for, with a flowed head, induction kit and exhaust I had 160bhp from my 309GTI which is about the same as a stock MI16 - but the mods cost me bugger all (£140 the head work and other bits were second hand and probably didn't add to performance anyway!)
I don't think you could fit an MI16 engine for that - but I guess if you were looking for 180-200bhp its probably easier to get from an MI16 than an 8v as you could do the fairly basic mods to the MI16, but the 8v would need serious work! Above that point though I'm told that the 8v is a better basis for big power and certainly more torquey, I think one of my mates 205's is on twin 48's and a fancy fuel system - it uses petrol at about the same rate as my skyline
All this talk of pugs is making me think of one now... I think I'll pick up a nice 306GTI6 runnabout - they're slipping below £5k now!!!

You need to ask yourself how much power you want to end up with. If you're going to use the car for anything more than a track toy, you'll also want it to to be driveable, which means 160bhp max from an 8v, and something like 220-230 from a 16v. The latter however will require many thousands for an engine which not only has this level of power, but tractability also, with torque that will eclipse any normally aspirated 8v.
Consider also a turbocharged 8v (Turbo technics if you can find one).
Havn't really finished reply lol.. but I gotta go...

Like any car, it'll have to be set up properly. If a turbo is set up properly, you don't have to worry about pre-detonation. If you don't want a turbo because you don't want a turbo, that's fine.
