LOL, nice one Pogue, Id say the gauntlet has been slapped across our faces Nick. Im all for OC'ing mesel
So Nick, lets see what a good OC can do for your machine, I'd say, ohhh, 6300, go for it

But I do not believe in running her right up on the edge just for benchies. I have never got why people do that. I bench mine at a speed where I use her day in day out with zero issues ever. I have yet to get even the slightest glitch with her. So stable it's boring Also, I do not believe in ocing VGA cards to b*ggery as I sell them on when I am done with them and I don't like the idea of potentially shortening somethings life unneccesarily and then pimping it on. Mild oc's on VGA cards, fair enough with some cooling. I am in a position where I am going so fast that VGA clocking is of little benefit tbh.
Cheers,
Nick

Hehe, me loves being right. One day, I will run her right on the edge, but for now I am blissfully happy with her Tbh, most people that are benchmark nuts do exactly what pogue does anyway, just to see

Agree with Pogue tbo, Its always nice to see what it 'can' do, and lets face it you never tax todays hardware in normal boring 24/7 mode. I never run my PC at benchmark speed settings for long but its nice to know you can if needed.
I think OC'ing graphics cards etc is fine if you increase the cooling proportionaly, and lets face it the 9700 Pro comes with the crappiest heatsink, shim, thermal pad and fan combo in the business, any half decent alternative to this is well worth a free increase in clock speed

If I get a chance, I 'may' bump her up this weekend to commit acts of mass 3D 0wNaGe upon you all, but we shall see. I still stand by my comment of being so fast already and not wanting to pimp on thrashed goods. People on here that have bought VGA cards from me know this to be the casePogue, what cooling are you using on the raddy? I am using a Zalman ZM80A-HP modded by me and with active cooling on the backplate and Tweakmonster BGA Ramsinks. Looks similar to those Sapphire Ultimate 9700pro's, but performs better in the cooling department.

Nick

Ah, watercooling on the raddy didn't occur to me as I always think Mobo watercooling first. I like to keep the water system seperate for mobo and VGA personally. Unfortunatly, I don't have the space in the new machine to watercool the VGA. I could try, but it would ruin the beauty of the beast

I use a 70MM P4 heatsink on the backplate. I have heard from more than one source that cooling the front plate is not as effective.
The heatpipe on the Zalmanreally needs to get upto a decent temp for the phase change to work efficiently and transfer mas amounts of heat to the backplate. If you keep the front plate too cool, the true efficient working temps of the heatpipe are not achieved.
With my setup, both the front plate and backplate are within 2 degrees of each other when running passive on mine. This is what I have heard and you can understand the logic behind it. I am considering whacking one onto the front tho just to see. What speeds do you run the core at 24/7 with that?
Cheers,
Nick

Yawn, but there you go. It doesn't show the mild mods made by me to the heatsink assembly itself, but shows the others what we are on about.
Cheers,
Nick

When I say front side I really mean 'side on' sorry, Im using a Zalman fan bracket to mount the 80mm smartfan (set to auto) with the fan thermistor on the GPU side.
I can and have run 24/7 at 380/335 and above (core only)with np's (went away for a week and forgot to underclock it again) , but with a well founded sympathy for all things which can potentially burn my house down, I now run it at 360/320 which cools it a good couple of degrees.
I have lian-li thermo's on both sides of the card and they remain pretty similar when under load. I think the GPU side hits about 45/48 under full load and the upside about 42/45 ish, which lets face it aint really that hot.

When the internal case temp gets warm, say 30c, the GPU heatsink gets to the same as your J, about 48c. I have a lian Li probe too bonded to the main heatblock, as close to the GPU as really wanted it. The backplate before the active cooling was always within 2c of this, indicating very efficient heat transfer through the heatpipe. Me impressed that with me little ditty fan on the backplate I am getting the same temps as you Are your probes on the actual heatplates or is one on the main block like mine?

Same as yourself Nick, as close as I could get it after assembly, I wasnt going to footer about taking the Z80 to bits again and I only wanted the probes for reference purposes.
What I like about these smartfans though is when the temps do rise under extreme load the fan kicks in full whack and cools it right back down to below 35 again within seconds, makes one hell of a noise when doing this but by this time I'm well into whatever game is stressing it and usually have headphones on
If I get a 9800 Pro though I might go down the GPU/CPU waterblock route, depends on whether I keep the Lian-li PC-6089 or go for PC-70. Hate large cases now tbo, so dunno what I'll do, watercooling is my first choice but after reading all you've said about being happy with the speed you have atm I just dunno whether its worth the geeky hassle, choices choices
