you really should warm up your car a little then ram it to the ground so hard that Monday becomes Thursday before you consider buying a diesel because of fuel economy and the cost of petrol, if you drive a very fast and precise car but never ask it why you bought it why bother buying it? I do not drive in an unsociable manner where this would be unsafe but get to know your local roads, blackspots and fastspots, then put your right foot down and enjoy, the right hand dial on your dash has a bit that is punctuated in red, the car you own is very happy to drive in this red bit if it is warm and the coast is clear, it will not break or gasp, it will not be displeased, in fact, the car will probably be fairly pleased with your input. I would never tell anybody how to drive their own car but the car you own has limits and is perfectly happy to reach them when the conditions are correct, I treat my car with respect and carry out the processes it likes you to carry out but when this has been done I drive it in a way that it was designed to be driven, give it a crack or trade cars, you really could be getting more mpg elsewhere if this is how you prefer to drive.

I had an impreza from new for a bit over 2 years and whilst I didn't exactly redline it much I certainly got my moneys worth from it After 30k miles I sold it for something faster and, feeling somewhat guilty about the poor old scoob, I'm much kinder to my new car!

When i had a GSXR 750 the powerband was basically 10 g's to 13ish and frankly once the mill was warmed up you had to thrash it or you weren't really going to go anywhere. in fact people who treated them with kid gloves and ran them in for the first 150,000(!) or whatever ended up glazing the engines and never getting the full monty out of it. I've only had my scoob a little while but i should think similar rules apply. They are designed to be worked hard and are of course built with a big tolerance for abuse - so use don't abuse and we should be laughing?

on the subject of motorbikes, just like cars you have your don't go over 4k for the 1st 1000 miles (or whatever it is on your lunatic bike).
This running in gives the best protection and longevity for the engine.

Motorcycle road racers employ people to run their new engines in my riding flat out (as said in this thread many times, once it's warmed up). This makes the engine much looser and delivers more power than one that was 'properly' run in.

But, as with ragging it everywhere, ultimately leads to components wearing out sooner, which is why they rebuild their engines every 10 or 20 thousand miles (depending on their budget). The top WSB and MotoGP teams rebuild their engines every race, as do the top car racers, because of this. But now we're talking EXTREME abuse, not a quick blast throught the twisties on a sunny Sunday!

Sprint Chief, don't think anyone said using 6K was going to damage the engine.

Trugoy, why does the manufacturer have a bit of the "right hand dial punctuated in red" ?

going into 6k doesn't damamge the engine, but done constantly would certainly make it's life shorter - as with doing anything on the limit. I still do take the car up there (yesterday after work for example, this thread got me wanting to give it some!) just not all the time.

The bit punctuated in red I assumed was the red zone of the tachometer, but surely going into this is bad for the engine. Which is why it's in red. Which is why if you forget to change up the needle bounces back off it when it hits the limiter. Or did me and Leslie both miss the same thing?

I warm it up then rag the nuts off it when I feel like it. When ragging, it often sees the red line. I then let it cool again before stopping.

One of the reasons I bought the car. Seems starnge to buy a Scoob then drive like your Driving Miss Daisy.

Cool

A different car i know, but I spend most of my time around 3-4 grand often lower still just cruising, but my peak power comes in at about 7400-7500rpm and it you don't hold it to the redline you will miss half a second or so every gear change as you come in slightly off the 2nd cam but hey ya pays ya money ya makes your choice.

I generally get high 30's in mpg terms, but thats peak time traffic for you, although it's notihng like that once you keep the revs up ! I must admit though going from a torquey V6 to a 4pot buzz box some low down grunt would be nice ! Not that it takes very long for a CTR to rev up to it's power band just a very different delivery. On the other hand there's no way i'd get high 30's in the mpg stakes if i had grunt low down.

As has been said by a number of people already though, i save my fun for when it safe, and certainly not in a built up area (reposnsible hat on !)

Cool

Going down the A16 in France of the clock for an hour half a few months back was taking it easy wasn't it? I'm deef in the right ear anyway.

Don't care, do tend to warm it up for two or three miles. Change the oil every 3-4k miles. But then touch red lines daily

Sprint Chief, don't think anyone said using 6K was going to damage the engine.
Ooops people picking up on the damage word, you have misunderstood my meaning, by damage here I was referring to shortening the life of the engine, not sudden failure.
going into 6k doesn't damamge the engine, but done constantly would certainly make it's life shorter - as with doing anything on the limit
Engine wear is not this simple. In fact engines can wear, under certain conditions, more at low rpm - for example, the load on many of the components within the cylinder head (the load on the nose of the cam, and following components) is greater at low revs. Wear on the cylinder bores is significantly higher if the engine is labouring (i.e. engine revs too low). When the engine is in it's correct operating range, and assuming the designers have done their job correctly, the additional wear on the engine at different rpm's would probably be unmeasurable.

Exceeding the red line means you are outside of the manufacturers' design limits, so "anything could happen" here, this is something I never do to my own cars. (Hire cars are a different story though )

When i first got my scoob last year,i drove it like an old man!!! After getting used to it over a period of about a month or so,i started to drive it much quicker, and explore its limits. Now....i drive it like a loon, with a huge cheesy grin
It doesnt need to be redlined though,as the peak power is only just over 6000rpm. I can count on one hand how many times i have mistakenly hit the rev limit.
One thing i have ALWAYS done though,is allow the oil to warm and circulate properly, and it gets serviced every 5000 miles.

Let everything get up to temperature, then it's 8500rpm almost every time. Paid for by myself and I'm not the slightest bit concerned that it'll blow up - it's a Honda you see

notorious, what's wrong with 66mph? you can over taking a BMW isetta at this kind of superduper speed! just think, here in hong kong the speed limit on the fastest motorwayof is a whopping 110km/h, that's a massive 67mph...not!). most motorway speed limits are 80km/h (50mph...really!!!)...is it worth getting a scooby...definitely!!!

Well, no-one has yet convinced me as to the wisdom of driving around like a Rally Driver - so, I won't!!

I want my car to see me out - indeed, my coffin may just be transported in it - how about that then??

So, its a standard car driven with care and affection - see you in 300,000miles time (when you are thrashing your 6th car!! )

Fair enough!

Still perplexed why anyone would buy a Subaru Impreza Turbo and not drive it properly... was the decision to buy it based on the quality interior, or the beautiful looks... <chortle>

Of course, if you never drive it at all, it will last even longer!!! Just remember to drain all the fluids out and store it in a nitrogen atmosphere.

PS. Do you people still have the plastic covers on your settee at home?

AND what makes YOU think that the car is designed to be driven like some grown-up Nova Driver???

Maybe, just maybe, those who treat their cars with respect are the ones who have got it right???

To my mind those who drive like a plonker have very small ******* and are cr4p in bed

Hey, I never said I drive it like a Nova And I never said I was grown-up either

As for having small ******* and being cr@p in bed, I would say it isn't just what you've got its what you do with it, and that applies to cars too!

You still haven't answered the sofa question

You SURE sound like a Nova/XR3i/Orion RoyBacer!!

I seem to be getting more sensible as I get older, but having said that, if someone has a go Ill put them in their place, as long as its not in a silly location/situation.

The car is mainly used for driving to and from work, I drive it like any car here, though sometimes find myself blasting up the slip road

I DO have concern for tyres, brakes, fuel economy, so am pretty sympathetic to the car.

Pete, you have a short memory, my car is COMPLETELY standard and I am a fully subscribed member of SISI It even has silver wheels!

The Sprint Chief username comes from proper motorsport heritage (sprint meetings, like hillclimbs but on the flat), the chief bit because I don't usually compete, I organise them. Most respectable I'll have you know

But my secret desire to part ex my scoob for a NOVA with wheels worth more than the rest of the car put together, holes drilled into the exhaust for that super raspy note that sounds like a Lambo (the tractors, not the cars) has been exposed here, it's only a matter of time before my dream is fulfilled...

Positive proof of my entry into SISI!!!

Now there's a thread from the depths.

Just noticed that about a year ago I said I would be looking to buy a faster car in a years' time. I obviously thought I was going to get rich faster than I actually did!! [Homer]D'oh[/Homer]

I'm an ex-member... I had a dark blue MY00 Sport totally standard to 2 years until I had a little accident (when ragging the nuts off it, incidentally - silly boy). Replaced with a silver MY00 Sport, totally standard for 6 months until I bougt the proper one with a turbo (and back box and gold wheels).. no more standards for me I'm afraid... Although that was on it when I bought it, I didn't do that. So it's standard ish.
