Finally finished the track through my woods today.

My sons had been clearing the branches for hours and finally we got to ride it.

Fantastic!!

Great to have a virgin wood of your own. Oldest son decided that my Jekyl suited him better than me. Honestly I was happy to switch back to "old faithful" my F900 that I've had for many years now.

Youngest followed up the rear on his F1000 Killer.

I'm knackered now and covered in mud. Quick few posts on here as I get my breath back before a much needed bath.

Yes, mountain biking is GREAT FUN.

 

Definitely is. Although not so much in the last week or two with sideways-driven sleet and slush covering most of the hills around here. I've been a bit fair-weather, and haven't really managed to get out on the bike for 2-3 weeks.

Probably get out on Wednesday lunchtime for a blast though (at last). If anyone else around Glentress fancies a ride and isn't working during the day, drop me an email in the next 48 hours.

Back out on my RiftZone after destroying the rear mech hanger in the dark the other night. Nice to be back on it and have now thrown away the free gear cable that came with MBR a while back. It was a Clarks 'coated' cable that supposedly needed no lubrication - what a load of crap, just gave dodgy shifting just when you didn't need it.
Also cleared a nice little log dropoff that is pretty small by freeride standards but plenty big enough for me...

 

Did the Evans Trailquest on Saturday. More mud than you could imagine, and really not all that challenging on either the uphills (doable other than traction issues) or the downhills (not exactly what you'd call technical). The flat bits (of which, sadly, there were all too many) seemed to be either road, farm track or edge-of-field.

Not my sort of event, to be honest, but I'm glad I gave it a go. I might do another when it's a bit drier and faster (and when one of the bikes is in better nick, though that's another story), but not for a few months.

 

Looking for some advice on places to ride. I recently moved near to Rickmansworth and was wondering if anyone knows any decent riding nearby. At the moment i tend to ride in ashridge forest (berkamstead), aston hills, epping forest, apsley guise (once).
I am looking for somewhere reasonably technical for an afternoon blast after work as the area around ruislip lido seems a bit boring? Any help much appreciated.

Not content with pinching my Jekyl, the teenager gave it back to me today as the "back tyre is flat". "Then fix it you lazy little oik!" was the considered reply. I'll need to teach him how to fix bikes as well as just riding them.

He's modified the course through the woods as one of the downhill turns was proving a bit too "technical"

Hired a JCB last week to remove some of the worst mud and goo and make it easier to climb up other side. Shame most of the other MTB guys on here are up in Scotland else we could get together for a ride. If anyone is down in Devon we have a holiday cottage to rent in great MTB country near to Dartmore.

 

Having not been on a bike for about 4 years, the g/f nagged me into taking her MTB'ing for valentines day - went to coed-y-brenin, lot of fun I'm now thinking about getting another bike, so any recommendations?

Last time I looked it wasn't worth getting a full sus bike at a half sane price if you actually wanted to pedal anywhere, all the effort went into warming up the rear shock Still true?

Best recommendation is to spend more than £300.

Don't even go near full-sus if you're spending less than about £800, you'll just end up with something sh*t.

For £379 you could do worse than a Scott YZ2 with disks. £299 will get you the non-disk version and it's a good starter bike with a decent frame and some good bits that'll stand up to 'real' mountain-biking for a beginner.

Can anyone name the model of forks I have on my bike ??

I want to know as I need an instruction manual for them as there seems to be so many ways to adjust them I have downloaded a set of instructions off the Pace site but from what I can make out they arent specific to the ones I have.
Any help would be much appreciated.

 

Soft tails and hard tails really polarise opinions. I prefer hard tails (less complex, easier to clean, less weight, less power loss) but in our club, I'm in a minority so it's horses for courses.

Best bet is to go and take a couple out and form your own opinion. I know you won't be buying new but you can do your research up front and then bag a bargain on eBay or in the classifieds.

Got my 661 4x4 and 2x4 pads from these guys really quickly at a fantastic price.

 

PG - I would say they are oldish RC36 forks. I have the ProClass RC36's and on the left hand stanchion (looking from above standing on the bike) there is a serial number engraved at the top just below the crown. Maybe yours have that as well and if so send it to Pace and they should be able to identify the fork model. If not, send the picture to them, they are really helpful. Check the www.pace-racing.co.uk site for contact details.

Heh heh. Time to resurrect this one again.

Got out for a 3.5 hour ride at Glentress yesterday - fantastic weather, and beautiful trail conditions. Slightly hampered on my braking (managed to slice the top off my LHS index finger on the greenhouse glass on Saturday ) but it just made me quicker on the DHs.

Made a nice change to be at Glentress on a weekend and be able to ride the trails, and enjoy a bacon buttie and a cup of coffee in the sun afterwards, without having to worry about serving pesky customers and fixing hire bikes.

Riding the new Innerleithen XC loop with Mr Moose next weekend for the first time. Should be good.
