911(996) Turbo - blimey!

And Juan, you sound just as snobby as the guys I work with here, your views on the Boxster biased exclusively by what others think. It's very hard to argue against the Boxster as a drivers car, it's got a reputation as the best handling Porsche in production.
I had a 944 for a time when I was 18 (well access to my dads anyway) and it was fabulous, much better than the 964 of the time in real terms..but then again it wasn't a 911 so was sneered at.

basal, just out of interest what car do you own?
Yep, I have a poor mans Porsche 944 Turbo, I am very touchy about it
You know when I go to "odd" race meeting all the drivers have brand new 911's and I am the only one in a crap 944.

Honest answer with no 'twist' or 'side' the 968 Cabriolet is a nice car... it overcomes my natural revulsion of 4 cylinder motors... that alone is an achievement in my books...
The 2.4 911S was a total gas... it is much better than any Porsche I have driven, IIRC it had just 190hp and was light and didn't 'exceed' that awful suspension, it was actually fun to drive. Sharp as any car would ever need be...

I don't hate them I just hate the image/driver profile they have here in the city. Do you finally understand that now?
I have understood it for a while thanks, I just think its your perception and not actually the truth.
But hey what do I know I don't work in the city.

Well there is alot more jealousy in the city too. For example our money market traders drive BMW;s and hate our Fixed income guys (Porkers and Rari;s). The salary differential is pretty huge and the car just goes to drive the point home.
City-folk are greedy, selfish, jealous buggers on the whole. I still wouldn't care what they thought though, because I don't value their personal opinions of me. But I can understand it because they tend to be the academic elite, accustomed to being the best in their class at school, at university and now earn multiples of the national average salary. It's hard not to have an ego after all that massaging.
One day though you grow up and work out whats really important..chicks, beers n BBQ's.

Old_fart you hit the nail on the head its all about ego the car is just part of the massaging.
Mycroft, I don't think everyone on here is a total dumb a**, after all your here!
Some people need to wake up and smell the coffee though to use an irritating but apt American phrase.

Thats it bros, you stick up for yourself... tell these soft southern stockbroker types that although you may be a member of the great un-washed northern tribe you are not to be taken as fool!
That's my boy!
I'm right behind you! [but not downwind, because of the lack of bathing facilities up there]

I'm a northerner who happens to live and work down here with the shandy drinkers. I haven't taken any offence at any of Mycroft's comments at all. Maybe its because I have a sense of humour and don't feel at all insulted by any of his comments.
I like the fact there is a North/South divide it gives us another topic to argue about other than football (and how almost all of us hate gooners!)

I wasn't saying you didn't have a sense of humour Bros2 just that maybe it wasn't fully brought into play when reading Mycroft's comments.
Best to take those kind of remarks as a joke whether said in jest or not.
As for Viz and the Bigg Market I just loved those fat slags when I lived there. The only place I've ever been where the women were sexually harrassing me!

great thread
CamK - thats probably true, about looking for the negatives in the owners. On the other hand, I don't have to look hard - they do kinda leap out and smack you in the face, almost without fail.

OK to sum this thread up
A 911 turbo is fast
A EVO with more power is faster
Most people would still rather have the 911 turbo
Some Porsches are driven by *****
Some Porsches are driven by nice people
The Toyota Soarer is the fastest car in the world and can be tunned to do 16 swquillion miles an hour and pull 5 googleplex G round a bend and no one cares.
One person who drives a Soarer is a **** and is not prepared to let other people have an opinion that doesn't agree with his.
I'm right you're wrong goodnight!

This thread really cracks me up. It is just so full of lame opinions from people who have never driven the cars they like to pass judgement on. There are idiots who own all brands of cars, but I'm sure a lot of this stereotyping, and these attacks on porsche drivers are fuelled largely by jealousy.
I work for a financial company in the city and own a new 996C2 (not as 'uber' as a turbo I know), so I must be some 'up myself' w@anker who bought the car soley for the image. Well thanks for pointing that out....hmmm....but maybe, just maybe I bought the car for different reasons.
Maybe I bought the car because owning one was a childhood dream, and I had posters of them on my bedroom wall when I was 12, and my father used to take me to the local porsche dealer for a treat to look at the cars.
Maybe I bought one because actually opening up the garage door, seeing its nice lines, and then listening to the car start up actually sends a shiver up my spine. I had an evo 6 before, and it definitely did not do that.
Maybe I bought one because the feel and weight of all the controls, steering, brakes, gear shift are absolutely divine, compared to the rather inert feeling in the evo 6.
Maybe I bought one because there is no turbo lag, and the throttle response is instantaneous, and accompanied by a lovely bassy burble at low revs, and a scream at high revs.
Maybe I bought one because I like a well trimmed cabin constructed from nice leather and quality components, and it is a pleasant place to be for both a short and a long drive.
Maybe I bought one because the suspension and setup of the car is perfectly suited to UK road driving, and I don't get out of the car after 2 hours and collapse knackered on the sofa.
Maybe I bought one because the car actually has some character, and doesn't leave me feeling cold and simply admiring its technical abilities but nothing else.
The 996 has a much broader range of qualities than my old evo 6. Trouble is, they're difficult to appreciate by "enthusiasts" who can see no further than a 0-100 time (and even a standard 996C2 IS faster than a standard Evo BTW), and how much lateral grip a car can generate.
Gary.

Claudius,
I owned an Evo 6 for almost 2 years before getting the 996. I think I am qualified to judge which car is faster.
The performance is just one aspect of the 996 which makes the car a pleasure to own and to drive. I notice you fail to comment on some of the other characteristics I like about the 996 - steering feel, brakes, throttle response, suspension. I guess these must be unimportant to you. In fact, since all you seem to interested in is the best g-forces you can experience on a limited budget, can I recommend a skydive without a parachute, as this would probably be just up your street.
But in the meantime, continue to enjoy your Evo - been there, done that, moved onto something I like better.
Regards,
Gary.

I used to own an evo and once got to drive an old 911 round a track. It might have been old and not a turbo but it felt absolutely perfect in terms of feedback and driver enjoyment.
Smelled a bit of burning oil when I was done but hey you've got to give them some haven't you . Anyway it was enough for me to know that I want a nice one one day when I can afford it GT2 for me please

Anyway, steering is much much better on the Evo. It's the best steering I have ever experienced, and I have NEVER seen anybody who can drive say otherwise.
Edited to say I didnt specifically comment on the gearbox, eiher, so here you go: if you find a better gearbox on a standard road car than that of the Evo, let me know.
