Fat people on planes

As has been previously mentioned, obesity isn't just caused by overeating or a bad lifestyle. There are many medical conditions causing obesity in adults and children.
Anyway, wouldn't the world be boring if we were all the same??

Tel,
I know it's childish and puerile, but when I see a shortarse sitting in one of the exit seats looking smug, I do derive enormous satisfaction from an accidental smack round the head with my newspaper when I brush past

I got stuck next to a very large lady on the way back from Singapore. I'm afraid that the thought of her sitting on my thigh for 13 hours was too much, and I brought it to the attention of the cabin crew, who susequently upgraded me.
Unfortunately, ofter eating her meal, she reclined the seat, which meant that the people behind couldn't get out of their seats. Consequently they................upgraded her, and moved me back!
Still they were very nice about it, gave me a generous discount on my next flight, and a nice hamper from Fortum & Mason.
Although I'm not small myself, I do think it's something that needs addressing. Without wishing to be rude, these very large people know they are, and know they'll cause discomfort to themselves and others.
A couple of people have mentioned legroom. Do a quick search, and you'll find a legroom chart of almost every airline. I always use it before booking long haul flights.

LOL at Josh L's story!
..and at Brendan's point about wearing a 30kg coat!
I overheard a conversation whilst skiing the other week from a girl who said here Aussie boyfriend was going to have to stay at the resort for a couple of weeks after injuring his knee badly. He had no medical insurance and thus could neither afford local treatment or the three seats he would have to pay for to fly back downunder without bending his knee. Nasty!
Regarding the puny cabin baggage weight allowance. I have seen that this is being ever more strictly enforced on Air Stelios and am waiting for the day that someone pulls me up over it. You seem to be allowed 5kg *plus* a laptop. The trouble is the departure lounges are bloddy shopping malls these days and it is very easy to pick up a few items and go over this limit. I can see the problem from the airlines point of view and I guess the key is just to be nice. It's the arsey customers that they will pick on...

But Stephen, is that an older 3kg laptop, or a newer slimline 1.5kg laptop?
EDIT- If he went skiing without medical insurance, he's hardly the brightest snowflake on the piste

This thread has been "pruned" to allow the "serious" nature of the discussion to continue - not degenerate into a sizist (of all shapes & sizes) battle.
Anyone else have any problems with the current state of this thread, please feel free to RTM.
Thanks
(Oh & if by "pruned" that means that someone's thread has been deleted - then it was deleted because IMHO it didn't fit with the thread or was abusive/offensive/peurile or other)

Let's get this straight - the fact that "fat" people are detracting from your comfort is NOT the fault of said person, but the fault of the airline for not providing seats of adequate size.
It is wrong that I should suffer during a flight becasue someone else is too fat to fit in a seat. I paid for a seat and I want 100% of it. Any fat person who thinks their size allows them to spill into the space I've paid for can bite me - between donuts presumably.
It is simply rude and inconsiderate behaviour and I will not tolerate it.
gareth - who has flown US west coast to UK far, far too many times and is a svelte 14st 6-2 himself.

just because i look after myself and am not overweight doesn't mean that i should get a smaller seat than some fat git who can't be arsed. if you are fat you should pay more...simple really...if you send a parcel you pay less for 1kg than 20kg is that wrong ?
#73
Isn't muscle heavier than fat? Surley you should pay for the volume of space you take up, therefore taking a 4 year old wouldn't cost the same as taking a 18 stone adult.

I used to be large shall we say and would've upgraded if I could afford it but I can't, I only fly maybe once or twice a year and only short flights to the med
The reason why I decided to lose 2 stone was that I'd realised that as I put on weight I was starting to sweat badly and reallt stunk
Now that I have lost weight I liken myslef to an ex-smoker i.e can't stand sitting next to fat people 'cause they, like I used to often stink of BO, like I say the fact that people said I stunk was the main reason why I lost weight

thing is I was gutted when a good friend took me to oneside and said that I maybe had a personal hygeine problem, he was diplomatic about it but the bottom line was I smelled and all because I was getting lardy
when I asked people they said they hadn't said anything because they were embarassed to
that's the trouble these days people are reluctant to say what they really feel in fear of offending
thank goodness someone drew attention to this, as well as not smelling of bo anymore I actually feel more comfortable every day and also when going on hols, the seats don't feel so small anymore

no I'm afraid the age hasn't died yet as we are all allowed to think and say (although maybe not on scoobynet)what we like- its called freedom of speech. I really couldn't care less if you are disgusted by my comments- the facts are this fat people look bad, are at increased risk of death and like other "unhealthy" groups (smokers) are antisocial and use more than their fair share of the NHS's resources.
Political correctness gone mad- there are no laws against discriminating against obese people. Similarly no laws against "ugly" discrimination. Personally in my role as an employer if I had 2 candidates equal in every way except one of them was obese I would pick the normal person every time.
edited to add : I looked at my posts and other than the word "bloaters" couldnt see anything that could be construed as abusive.

>>There are many medical conditions causing obesity in adults and children.
I find this hard to believe. There must be less than 1% of `obese` people who have a *proper* medical condition that means that they are fat.
I am overweight, this is because I eat too much, and don't do enough exercise. I'm not big boned, I don't have a glandular problem. I'm just fat

You may be able to think and say what you like but there is no need to use offensive language. In my book sizism is as bad as racism. You are discriminating against people just because they are different to the "norm". The same principal applies whether you don't employ someone because they are black or overweight.
And what is your definition of "normal"? You make it sound like people with a weight problem should be locked away where no one can see them just because they are different. The average size of women in the UK today is 16....should they be locked away too???
Not all overweight people look bad, are smelly, antisocial, uncapable or ill.....fact!

I agree.
I think it would be better to not bow to PC comments about something like this. If we do, we are just re-inforcing the ideas of these people that they need `protection` because they are different. People, don't find any confort in forcing everyone else to be politically correct. If you're obese, you have a problem. fact. Don't try to hide behid PC comments and idea's.

Wasn't racisim defined as an attribute that is inherent in a person that can't change?
I mean, a black person is always black. But a fat person was not always fat. How can you compare the 2? You are the person who you are, and you made yourself that way.

Wrong!
A large portion of obese adults are obese not due to their eating habits/lifestyle but due to other reasons which are out of their control.
For example, thyroid disorders, Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), hereditory factors such as a high leptin hormone, abnormalities in the gene responsible for the Beta-3 adrenergic receptor (located in fat tissue in the abdominal area), slow metabolism (caused by the use of prescribed drugs for inflammatory conditions, seizures etc).....I could go on....

Hmm.....this thread is getting out of control again!
Did you all know that Tom Cruise is medically classed as obese because of his height to weight ratio? I can't see you all calling him a "fattie".
Also, I'd love to arrange Jonah Lomu to sit next to you on your next flight - can't see you arguing when he invades your seat space....you guys just don't get it. Being too big for the seat does not mean you are obese!!!
I find your intolerance of "fat" people a disgrace. If you ever have cancer treatment or such like, and you bloat up, I hope those around you treat you with the disgust you seem happy to dish out in your currently perfect world.....

I don't believe this. Is there any evidence to support this?
If I get 100 obese people in a row, how many would have medically proved illnesses that contrubite (sp) to their condition? I guess less than 10%.

guys,
this thread has gone off topic. some of the comments are a bit harsh! but i do agree with most of what has been said, however, regarding obesity, please, don't blame it on genetics etc (yes, they may be more prone to easily gaining weight) but the simple fact is most people eat too much and do too little exercise - espeically americans!

You are going way OTT, when I was fat I didn't consider myself ugly, fat people are not all ugly....but they do tend to smell...but this is not because they don't wash, I used to shower morning and night but....I always stunk by mid morning, not because I didn't wash but because I was overweight and was just sweating a lot - I think your last comment is offensive in the extreme

name a good looking fat person?

As I said, Tom Cruise is medically classed as "obese" - obviously not my bag, but I think quite a few women seem to fancy him!
So - VinylJunkie - I assume your ideal woman is Callista Flockhart? :-)))
YUK!
