FMIC - DIY Possibly

couldn't take pics ..... but the Intercooler fits !!!!! only problem so far is that the Intercooler would be really close to the water radiator (10 ~ 20mm) is this going to be a major problem
#35
I would really like to know if it is ok to have the IC really close to the radiator (although at least 50% of the radiator would still be directly exposed to air), or would this increase water temps ?????

Not sure Carlos.
Have you looked at how close the PACE kit is, as that has a smaller radiator and it is also moved back so that the intercooler can sit directly infront of it without butchering the bumper, IIRC.

Rob,
what I/C have you used in your installation? I've been off the BBS for a while and haven't seen yours before. Looks very neat and short pipework.
It could be just the size I'm after.
Cheers

things are going well and I will be posting some pics of how I am making my current setup:
into something "very similar" to this:
I have placed my intercooler upside down and so far I have calculated that I will be using ~ 150cms less intercooler piping and should still be shorter than the usual setups with rotated manifolds.

Rob, do you have a later pic of your FMIC setup ????? ..... have u measured your inlet temps ?????
Carlos H.
Some of the Hoses have changed, i had to use some pulsar hoses at first which were bent awkwardly, these have been changed for silicone pipes now which flow smoother and are not kinked at all.
I have also wrapped the boost pipe above the head/turbo to try and cut down heatsoak.
To be honest i have not noticed any more lag over teh top mount o.e. i/c, however.. the car seems more torquey lower down which may hide some of the lag perhaps???
I think i am going to try rotating the compressor housing and run the circuit in reverse, that way the charge from the i/c to the inlet wont run over the turbo etc..
I would also really like to rotate the turbo itself but that is something for the future...

I'll post the latest pics when it is complete mate, i am playing with a hydraulic pipe bender at the moment and will post the pics once the solid pipework and front entry is in place..

Carlos, it is looking good, but as denmark says, wont you be losing a lot of coverage of the FMIC by putting it there.
Can you not have the end tanks modified so they enter and exit at the top of the end tanks instead of in the centre.
Might move it to projects will see what happens

Mmm EVO 5/6 I/C. Thats what it looked like.
As for the question of clearance between the radiator and I/C cores, they can be placed against each other with little or no clearance. Just make sure you place some foam/rubber seal between them to protect the cores and more importantly to make sure that the air passes through both cores and doesn't spill out between them. This will also make the fans far more effective in slower speed situations. The air will be pulled through both cores rather than drawn in between them, bypassing the I/C. Air will always follow the easiest route, which is not always through the core!
Sorry, lecture over......

new radiator and intercooler mounting plates have been made, piping is also on progress, but I have had access to a used front grill which I am modifying it (with a friend that has some expertise with fibre glass moulding) to make it "look" similar to that of the WRC ( ..... please note that I said only similar LOLs)

..... hood pins might also be a nice idea, and I especially like the way the subaru logo is held

Carlos,
I was just thinking ,have you tried is you can mount the headlights for the hoses??.
And what about that top/bottum bar that was there, can you mount that again?

..... spending more time on the "WRC type" front grille modification than in the intercooler piping (which is finished) so the idea is to do something similar to make my current setup:
into something similar to the Subaru WRC - P2000 the best looking :
( it never stops )

front grill is starting to look like the WRC one , but so far I have only been able to make some preliminary tests with the stock one will decide if it is really worth to place the IC higher ..... so far it is working very well (although a section of it is covered) inlet temps so far with 1.4bar have been 8 degs higher than ambient temp . Data logging will be properly done this weekend and next week
