T-uk thinks I should buy a diesel as a runabout. But then what would I use the Scooby for? It would get dusted off now and again as a fun car, seems a bit pointless. I enjoyed it most when I was using it daily. If something falls off it I could go and buy a banger until it is fixed I suppose.
I just can't get excited by a Fabia vRS 130 TDi or similar
If I flog my 406 I could get say £2500 back and save another £850 a year on insurance/tax. I think this should cover the Scooby fuel bills.... Scooby used to do 20mpg, 406 does 25mpg and I do 14000 miles a year. I think I'll save more by running the Scooby, and being ready to buy a Micra at short notice when/if it breaks

you do a min of 70miles on a working day.
I just think you will keep the licence longer, like the 50mpg and the feeling , that the car is not so tuned , that somethings about to let go.
also you'll soon realise that you need a paddle clutch and dog box for the pistons, rods, welded block and NOS...
ooops-have I let something slip ,probably not because they all know how power mad you are and will have clocked all the other threads on blocks, rods and pistons anyway.

John
At the power level you are planning (today) it should be a reliable package surely ? It's not like the 14k miles a year are at WOT !! It will probably spend less than 1% of its life at WOT even then you are only running circa 1.3 bar boost. While you are on part throttle the engine doesn't know how much power it has and hence only wears as a std unit would.
Davids is different, with big cams, thin valves, heavy springs etc which will be stressing/wearing more even on part throttle (but still not a big problem)

Don't go there John!
I've Survived 26 yrs of motorcycling.
I can honestly say the Scoob is far more gratifying.
I.E. All roads all weathers
Motorbike=Grin and bare it.
Scoob=Big grin and floor it. LOL.

I get it tomorrow Harvey. Not much chance to run it in before my holiday but after that I will not be hanging about and will be glad to be tuning it (hopefully successfully) again

wanna bet
if it's back this week , I'll take you and jane out to those restaurants you like where the portions would not fill a hamster(still cannea believe the b4stards only gave me 9 chips with my steak)
if I win I'll shoot a coo , you can then use your tools of the trade to gut it and jane can cook it . not sure what you'll eat though , either that or you can take us out for a chinese

it lives
it even sounds like a scoob
running 8psi and it pulls beautifully, makes the 20g feel like a TD04, me want both.
underside of car quite oily form the breathers but I suppose they are big pistons.

The 20G on the 2.5 feels very strong on spool up, and er, a little too strong at higher RPM (Needs a bit more work on the wastegate porting, but it is not dreadful). Pressing the throttle at 3000 RPM is 2nd gear produces a quick response, not a load of lag. However, this is only running low boost, so the difference between off and on boost will be more pronounced. However, at only 8 PSI there is still a lot of torque. A few stopwatch tests using the speedo produced 4.2 second for 30-70 using 6000 RPM change from 2nd to 3rd gear, and about 6 from 60-100 in 3rd changing to 4th at 6000 RPM. Midrange boost was 8 PSI, it creeps to 16 PSI at 6000 RPM, don't know what it does over 6000 RPM. Fuelling is 10.5-11:1 and the timing is very retarded. Mileage is 750. I am not holding it under load for a long time, just quick blats to 6000 RPM now and then. Need to check on oil usage over the coming miles after my holiday because there were a few puddles on the nearside chassis leg near the breathers. Could be those from run in - it is the "extra" STi breather on the block that is making the most.
