Daily driver 2.4 or 2.5 project - target 450 BHP/400lbft reliable
Hi David, pin would be ace, I think the 92-96 ones would be fine from what I've seen. I got the camera out last time and just couldn't press the button because of the shame
You'd see why when I do finally put pictures up, garden hose, bacofoil and duck tape never looked so shocking
But is goes like **** off a shovel to my mind

From: Leeds - It was 562.4bhp@28psi on Optimax, How much closer to 600 with race fuel and a bigger turbo?
How about this for a messy engine bay?
Im going to possibly strip the whole lot out to do something different.. (not engine wise)

Pah! Simon and Wallis are but rank amateurs when it comes to untidy engine bays

I'm impressed how this car has now turned out
.
after giving jb the use of my garage , tools , countryside (for decatted blips at mid-night
) and use of the hoose when he needed a coffee break , it seems I might actually get them back as I am struggling to see what is left to do to his car , until he gets greedy and breaks it or gets bored and builds something else.
driving it today I can only describe his car as a "complete daily driver package".
the engine sounds like a daily driver , since the block and heads are at the end of the day standard subaru , there are no unpleasant rattles from cold etc. it is also cheap enough not to break the bank if it fails (a real plus point for a daily driver IMO)
the apexi ecu with conversion seems more refined in road use than anything I have driven including standard cars. I have never seen anyone so willing to hack into a loom
with absolutely no fear , how he has not set himself on fire , his car or my garage amazes me. I never thought he would get the refinement he wanted but he has managed from what I have seen today.
the P1 suspension feels right for road use and copes just as well as the chassis ( +all the bracings) in most situations. both feel pushed IMO when going for it and coilovers would improve things more but they will not be as good for a daily driver. I run coilovers on my own car and describe them more as a fast road set-up than track but for 20k miles a year I would not go past the P1 stuff.
the gearbox and clutch. when the gearbox first went in , I did not like the ratios. I am still not a fan of the short/tall mix but do wonder what synchro box would be better?. the taller tyres and stretched rev limit have aided to cover up the short gears and top seems right for scalping R1's
.the clutch also seems spot on for the use so far , heavy enough to hold and friendly enough to be smooth.
the turbo is the only questionable thing IMO .
the 20g felt excellent in a comfortable 400bhp area , with spool on tap , cruising and a sneeze gave about 10psi
.
the ION did the 450/400 target on optimax but did need driven.
the gt30 , well it grabs you by the ***** and just laughs at the flow it is getting asked to run. it wants more and I am not sure if jb has the will-power not to let it have it
.
it might not have reached the target but for me the 20g is the sensible choice. it bolts on so if it fails , any other bolt on turbo can be fitted to keep the car running. it was also so easy to drive , with no need to downshift.
I don't know how it will last. it feels so unstressed at the moment I would like to think it will last but we will just have to see.
good job
now get a MY05 JDM STI bought so we just swap the block , turbo and do to it what you have just done to your classic
. you know I will give you a good price for the left overs

I met up with JB last night and had a run in this car, it's just so sorted
I tried and tried to get it to misbehave but it responded with perfect manners each time, even round the car park dropping the clutch in at 500 rpm to the point of almost stalling it then slamming the throttle to the floor, it just purred away like it was a new Toyota
Regarding power, the linear boost profile makes it feel like it has a v e r y wide power band, with no let off in pull by 7k where I was shifting up.
I have to agree with t-uk that it really is the perfect no compromise fast road package, quiet, planted and very very quick.
I wouldn't be changing back to a 20G, although I agree it was just so responsive at low rpm
The GT30R can now be had for the same money as a new 20G and they are available off the shelf in the uk so I can't see any issues there.
The only thing I'd look for in the longer term is the Forrester 6sp for the taller ratios which would IMO suit the wide power band better.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm pleased with how it has turned out as well. The fuelling with respect to throttle at low loads had been a nightmare to sort out to what I would call daily driver standards, but well worth it in the end
For the interested, it runs a blend of Alpha (not Alpha-N) and speed density, and this seems to give it a creamy smoothness in all situations I've driven it in that is really appreciated on a daily driver, despite stiff engine/box mounts, 740cc injectors, lightened flywheel, larger piston size, lots of intercooler pipework and a 4" compressor inlet with ported shroud as well as not being able to run a MAF conspiring against us. However, it now seems to have no issues at all in terms of cold/hot starting, idle, transients, cruise, full load etc which I'm rather pleased about. It idles nicely at 900 RPM running closed loop and the economy is typically 22mpg in mixed use.
Massive thanks to T-uk for his time, tools, farm, patience, realism, Andy for being a continuing source of ideas and expertise, Job for help with tweakage and on the spot brilliant ideas (as well as numerous engine pulls
), Andrew Carr for hardware and programming help, and the likes of Wallis and Pavlo for chipping in here and there

Excellent review John (t-uk)
It took me all of 30 nanoseconds to change my mind from 1.3bar to 1.6bar whilst mapping with pat
, John clearly has more resilliance than I.
John (B), glad it finally sounds sorted. I know its a daily driver etc, but would you be interested in attending SSO, just to see what a perfect road package can deliver under pressure, so to speak. I would also dearly love a drive, to try and fine tune my own goals, as we are both playing with the same setupl (well almost).

You're welcome to a drive if we are ever nearby, I'll need to have a think about SSO though. I've been "protecting" the car from events for the sake of reliability, it just makes me want to run more boost, and trashes driveline components, also sitting heatsoaking in queues etc.
Always have a look in to see how things are coming along for you guys with you projects so it's great to read about a car that has achieved what it was set out to do. The car sounds great John. I hope you can now just get on with enjoying it day to day.
I'd also just like to add I think it's great how all you guys who are doing similar things or have the tools, knowledge time etc go out of your way to help each other out. I think that's what half of this is about IMHO.
great stuff!
