Andy's old GT30R is now on the car. Needs some work on engine management, I want to get it working speed density on the Apexi, needs some development.

First impression - good spool up, love the manic hoover sound

Yup, the ported shroud does seem to give a sound that ranges from "manic hoover" at low to moderate boost, going up to "make your ears bleed" at flat out.

Update...

T-uk and I have been making up a cold air setup from the opened out inner wing.

Still to add temperature compensation to the Apexi, as per P1 wiring diagram I can populate the same pin on my UK wiring loom to run a charge temperature NTC thermistor connected between this pin and ground. Just researching suitable devices.

Getting intermittent smoking of the wrap at the bottom of the downpipe, all levels are stable, wondering if it is a power steering leak, one of those annoying ones to track down.

Running speed density on the Power FC, 1.4 bar flat, rich and retarded sensibly, runs very nicely. Got rid of virtually all the glitches now, hardware all sorted, just getting together the best bits of all the code I've written to make it efficient, easily adjustable etc. My box hooks into TPS, RPM and MAP and outputs MAF. Manners are very good, the transients take some work though but can be as good as MAF, getting nearer by the day now. All the old MAF judders are gone which is nice.

I have removed: purge solenoid, OEM wastegate solenoid & MAP sensor (can use the AVC-R ones), MAF sensor, pressure sources switching solenoid, and lots of trim and metal from the inner wing

Overall, coming on nicely

Yes checked all the connections we can see Alan. Need to have another look.

Floyd, you don't want to see what the grinder did to the inner wing It will be all covered up with foam backed foil material on a mesh. Will get some pics if I remember the camera next time.

John, I have been using the same bead thermistor I posted the details of on 22B, placed in either my FMIC pipework at the throttlebody or inside the filter and it has been totally reliable.

I made a probe up using the thermistor heatshrinked/epoxied into a flattened -opening up to ovalled piece of ~4mm ali tube (if that makes sense).

I have seen your last email but haven't had chance to reply yet.

Andrew...

Thanks Andrew.

Don't worry about half the emails, a lot of them are just ideas, if anything sparks a light of illumination I'm sure you'll let me know, but usually I'm eventually answering my own questions. I think I'll use a 20ms timeslice to measure delta TPS to detect a minimum enrichment threshold of 2V/s.

Transients are now better than they were off the MAF sensor on OEM ECU I have plenty of fuel (but not too much), early enough for every single transient I can produce now, even trying to catch it out Good sign is that I am back to fairly standard MAF sensor enrichment values in the PowerFC, so I really am emulating a MAF sensor as close as I can. FC Datalogit arrives soon and I will be able to sort the main map out then.

Induction is boxed in. Temperatures stay within 5 degrees of ambient whilst you are on the move. Without the box on a 15 degree C day, the inlet temperature was 50C after a normal drive with the last bit down a narrow road at about 20 mph for 1/4 mile, then when I went out again it took 10 miles to get down to 30 degrees C and wouldn't go lower. With the air filter boxed in the temperature was 10 degrees lower on the move typically, and 20 degrees lower after sitting in traffic

Need to populate the IAT sensor pin in the wiring loom and get a thermistor in still.

Smoke seems a bit less now.

By the way, I can vouch for that, stabbing the throttle at various loads and rpm, neck is still sore

Managed to get a pin that fits the ECU, but is too large to go in the wiring loom plug. Maybe I need to find a bit of wiring loom off a scrap, would have a captive wire as well then.

I worked a bit more on the AVC-R and the fuelling - still waiting for FC Datalogit. Have it running low 11s AFR and 12-22 degrees timing from midrange to the top at 1.4 bar all the way, it sits at 14-16 through most of the midrange, and then ramps as torque reduces at the top. This is running plain Optimax. Maximum knock count is 14 on the hand commander, and there are no spikes. Knocklink gets a flicker of orange from 7000 RPM up. I don't think I'm going to go chasing timing this time. It feels astonishingly perky, about the same overall as when it blew up with the methanol, crazy timing, 1.7 bar etc. But it doesn't seem to be blowing up with 100 miles of pretty hard driving today, although I haven't held it at high speed. Usually it has done the gaskets within 10 miles of a hard thrash. Time will tell, although the things I am observing and feeling about the engine feel very good indeed, it is effortless and unstrained.

I'm finished with all I need to do with the MAF emulator now, but I may implement a few further ideas yet. Fine tuning will be better with datalogging with FC Datalogit. I'll also need the Datalogit to set up the temperature compensation.

Once you get the temp compensation sorted, I'll bolt mine back on !!

So............. what about 1.6 bar

3000 RPM, 1.4 bar at about 3250 RPM. I used to get these in 6th, but since the cold air box as Andy suggested, it is about the same in 5th as it used to be in 6th.

John, get it rolling roaded as it is now, i bet it produces an excellent power under the curve graph as an example of the 2.5's tractability, even with a relatively big turbo.

Me, like boost, nah, never

It's an excellent match, the GT30R and a 2.5 It's the response when you stab the pedal, the boost gauge just jumps up

1bar @ 3k, 1.4 @ 3250 and it would peg 1.8 bar by 3400 (as JB will prove for us in due course )

I should have kept it ! Kinda having second thoughts about this GT95R on my car now

I always think my engine bay is a little untidy compared to some It has its share of garden hose, cable ties, and reflective stuff, not exactly bling. There have been a few leaks over its 4 years of modifications, and more swaps of engines/turbos/gearboxes than I can easily keep count of... I will try to get some pictures at some point. It is a Lateral performance alloy bellmouth and K&N cone filter. Quite big which is good, but needs creative positioning. But it is all hidden from view under reflective stuff.
