so not a case of extreme lift off oversteer - made worse by heavy braking!?

sounds like there is more to it

never driven one so merely a passing comment.

Just reading through this thread, guess what I drive LOL!! (for the hard of thinking, the answers is a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo).

Some good advice in this thread, some a tad misleading, e.g the end swapping comment, the only way to get the ends to swap is either through a fault or through being a numpty.. The rear brakes on a Couppe do virtually nothing, the vast majority of the effort is taken by the Brembo's up front. The handbrake WILL freeze on and could conceivably cause end swapping, but you would know about it being frozen the minute you tried to move it. The reason it freezes is because the end of the cable is only sleeved by a small rubber boot, these split and let in water, hey presto frozen handbrake. Easy to fix with new cables or some grease.

They can use oil to the level suggested, mine used to use exactly what it said in the manual (i.e. 1ltr every 1K), a change to a good quality, fully synth oil has reduced this to next to nothing (Mobil1).

Make sure whatever you get has FSH, FIAT not important infact could be detremental (dealers are ****e), specialist are better. Make sure it has the red master key (1K lock etc change if it doesn't). Cambelt needs doing at 6yrs or 72K miles, most specialists will do this with the engine in situ now, fiat will too now but will still charge you for taking the engine out!!

Don't expect it to handle like a EVO or a Scooby!!!! But it's pretty good for a FWD, been known to waste the odd scoob too (but only in a straight line!! LOL)

errm, that's it I think, take a gander at our forum (I think you already have), loads of advice there.

http://forum.fiatcoupe.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?Cat=

think you'll struggle to get the mileage you are after for that money, but the prices are dropping like stones at the mo so you never know, maybe try auctions??

Good luck

(P.S. some good stuff here, been a 'lurker' for a long time, only just got round to registering))

Dunno bout the brake bias but the ease of end swapping is utter tosh mate.
Had a 20v turbo+ for two years, after owning an evo. back end never even shifted. This was a 2000 car - maybe your buddy had some earlier ropey one? Brakes were AWESOME on this one.

Main gripe with em is on country lanes. they're WAY less stable than AWD Jap metal, oh and that awful turning circle.

Seeing as I don't get on the lanes much I'm now looking for another Fiat cos you won't find anything under 40K that does what they do on the a-roads and motorways

Sure the P1 will just match it 60-100 but will it (theoretically) cruise at a ton at 3,500 rpm? lush!

hey Merc, was it freezing weather when that happened?

Thats a glitch on em, the handbrake is known for sticking in freezing temperatures.
Caused the missus to hit the kerb at about 3 mph as she went round a mini roundabout on ice.

Fiat claimed to know nothing about this and when I asked em to grease it they refused and moaned about it causing grit and dirt to stick to cable. I since discovered that loads of folks have had this problem.

When we get another one we won't be using Fiat UK. Local dealership was AWFUL. Will find an Italian car specialist for sure. The last one was a company car so had to get done by Fiat UK. Next one won't suffer the same fate

yeah FIAT absolutely must know of the problem. I think its been mentioned in some reviews etc. too

The plus is the one we had (pre-colleague write off!), a lovely motor and is the only one we're after now.
preferably a W or X as we'd look to keeping it for a couple of years.
The bigger alloys, nice brakes make it a much nicer looking car in my eyes. it must sit a bit lower too i think.

R/S reg - I know they did 20v turbos then but think the 6 speed didn't come along until maybe 1999.
I have only even driven / been in this one Fiat Coupe so can't advise really on earlier ones. Same bhp on the earlier ones though so I expect they go pretty much the same

Finding these parkers owner reviews not bad as a general intro to a car
Try http://www.parkers.co.uk/owning/user...I&model_id=437 for the Coupe owner reviews

Not sure whNt else there is. W're looking for another Fiat Coupe cos can't think of anything else. Better the devil you know.
We thought briefly of an S3 but very pricey and too many reports of less involving than many other cars. Aslo looked into the new Leon Cupra R which is a lot of car for the money but only new ones available so no go for your budget. Also, couldn't face the drop in that 60-100 performance when it came down to it. 10+ secs sounded so slow!!

Maybe some souped up Seat Ibiza could be fun short term?
or old Scoob?

It would stamp on a CTR in my humble opinion on the straights. its like a mini grand tourer and handles like one too at high speed on a nice surface. like a slot car!

The only car I've driven that really felt any faster than it once you're rolling has been a supercharged jaguar XKR - jeez do those things move. 130 in the blink of an eye! - that really did feel faster.

i appreciate this is all just 'feelings'! though

edited cos I'm blind - thought you said CTR not RS focus! Not clued up on rs focus speeds so can't comment. It would have to go some though

edited again after a quick search. finding that rs is quicker to 60 but over a second slower 60-100, overall half a second slower 0-100. should be a close one what with Fiat's dodgy b road handling and focus's dodgy ability to put the power down
