Also bear in mind, a more efficient tmic will (should ) have less of a pressure drop across it...meaning you get the same manifold pressure after less work from the turbo. Assuming the tmic is at least as good at cooling as the OE one then your onto a winner, as that same manifold pressure will be entering the ic slightly cooler too.

Question

Right I'm about to fit my ASP tmic to my 02 wrx. Anyone got any more thoughts about reducing heat soak? Is it worth getting my downpipe lagged when i get it fitted? Does anyone do modified heat shields to fit uprated d/pipes? Or can the OE one be modified to re-fit?

cheers

Ed

The only way to reduce heat soak on the APS TMIC would be to fit a fan underneath. IIRC it has been done before.

Heat soak will only be a problem in traffic though IMH and measured O.

Surely lagging / modded retrofitted heat shield will help? I appreciate hot air rises so its gonna be a problem regardless, but the shielding should help reduce direct heat where the larger intercooler overhangs the d/pipe?

Is it worth getting waterspray fitted for when heat soak is an issue (traffic etc) if so how much?

Thumbs up

Scoop and a Aps cold air kit should help.

It is quite feasible to modify the OEM heat shield to fit. I did post some pics of mine smoewhere around November; I'll let you do the search. The other thing that helps is if you have a cast downpipe, with built in heatshield - like my APS.

I would also suggest that having some insulation on the up-pipe must make some difference, both on keeping underbonnet temps down, and maintaining thermal energy in air entering the turbo.

Finally - although I don't know anyone who has tried it - I know Demon Tweaks sell a "high temperature tea cosy" to fit over the turbo and surrounds (probably just exhaust wrap, only shaped), and claim good benefits from maintaining gas energy into the turbo and keeping underbonnet temps down. Might be worth a look?

Yeah the turbo gets pretty hot, i hadnt thought of trying to insulate that aswell. Nor the uppipe.

You have to be holistic - why allow the block to bleed heat into your inlet manifold, or your fuel lines?
