James my saviour!!
Just what i needed - someone who has owned both a scooby and a pulsar (or however many u said u had lol)

Im still edging toward the Pulsar as ill only be 20 next year and insurance wont be as harsh.
Once my 'mini-jap beast' fad has phased away and hopefully when ive got more cash ill get a scoob and tune it up nicely

Think its more wise this way!

Cheers!!

Chris - if i could afford to buy and insure an Evo... I would have one by now (and it would be black not some gay yellow colour hehehe)!!

James - that pulsar looks tough... love the wheels!

I'll stick up for the GTiR too. The SR20DET engine is bullet proof. Same one used in the S14 200sx which, as i'm sure everyone knows, has a lot more tuning potential per £ than the scoob. Build quality on the GTiR isn't great but it's a lot better than a scoob. As for reliability, the SR20 beats the EJ20 hands down.

On the scoobs side, it has the handling, the noise and the looks, though they are common as muck these days.

But... i wish i'd bought another nissan instead of my scoob so i'm kinda biased

I have had both a pulsar and scoobies.

The pulsar was very quick in a straight line and you get a lot of go for not much cash. But it definatelly wasen't as quick point to point as my scooby.

Insidently the pulsar got wrote off when the back end came round on me going through some s-bends, so i don't think the handling touches the scooby.

Disco.... as for your comment about the group N rally cars.

Subaru have a works rally team, nissan dont... i think that gives the scoob a huge advantage when getting it set up a rally car.

Ladycruzers car will be a street car so rally 'heritage' doesn't come into it.

id go for the impreza as its a better looking car and overall is a better designed package.

the concept of the impreza is pretty much unmatched and produces one of the grippiest and best handling rolling chassis'.
This is due to it being designed from the ground up to be four wheel drive.

it has an ally engine (very light) which being a flat four has a very low centre of gravity and is mounted quite far back in the engine bay ina longitudinal layout. This gives equal length drive shafts which eliminates torque steer and weight ditribution which is conducive to fine balance when chucking it around.

This is something absent on a not ayc equipped evo. but we arent going there.

just to stop a few myths.

Due to the construction and the ally engine, I think you will find the impreza is considerably lighter than the pulsar with the centre of mass being further back too as already stated. This explains the pulsar's tendancy to understeer massively.

the pulsar engine is a fine bit of kit and is very very reliable, I dont cafre what people say. The standard intercooler is known to let it down but then the tmic on the impreza probably isnt much better.

The impreza engine is certainly not as strong in stamdard form, but again a flat four is a very naturally balanced engine only suffering from 2 nd order harmonic vibrations, where as an inline four is a hateful design of engine and about as far from naturally balanced as it is possible to be.

This is the technical reason why I would choose an impreza.

I cant imagine insurance will be very different to be honest, but the weight advantage does give the impreza the upper hand in terms of performance out of the box.

The pulsar does tune more easily though.

Its up to you, but I know what I would choose.

You have to remember the Gti-R has an age disadvantage, and this shows with some tired examples on the roads. However, if you look hard enough there are some great ones which have been well looked after, mild mods will see near 300bhp power outputs, and yes - the SR20DET is a damn good engine

On the handling front, a set of coilovers, a whiteline handling kit and bumpsteer removal helped turn my R into a go-kart

Check on www.gtiroc.com for a different perspective.

Si - With 300bhp (pretty much 1 bar boost) Pulsars, on standard internals, will eat a similary powered Scooby as long as they are setup correctly!! They only 'blow up' if people dont take care of them and do the correct tuning, etc
Sounds to me you have already made you mind up. Ask a load of pulsar owners :

"Can you tell me if your cars are any good and should I buy an impreza ?" errr they might not agree with you .

Do what I did and what any sensible purchaser should drive them all. Dont drive an EVO or a JDM impreza though .

Group N is a more or less a production class event, so any WRC developments are completely irrelivent, as cars are run in standard/"street car" form.

I had a rare UK spek sunny GTIR. It unfortunately did'nt run properly from the start. Standard handling was pants and the 14 inch alloys were shocking = very small standard brakes!! Eek! Petrol was about the same, noise wasnt as nice and wasnt as user freindly, although i loved the transmission whine - real rally touch. Also when I had one they were very rare, although this wasn't such a cool thing when you wanted some diagnostic work done on the car. Had a few garages diagnose things wrong, take my money and the car was still not right, very annoying.

Liked the looks though,, even the teatray rear spoiler. they produce about 225 BHP on standard 9-10 psi. Stnadard car can be turned up to 1 bar boost without going bang. After that need forged pistons or it'll get expensive.

Norris designs have a shedload of tuning goodies for them for anyone whose interested.

I love my MY2000 scooby though. and am hoping for it too be reliable, cos the GTIR wasn't although partly cos of bad mechanics grrr.

Cal

Oh and by the way 1 Bar boost in a GTIR will give you 250 -260 BHP but be careful. Clutches and gearboxes are notorioudsly unreliable on GTIRs specially with upped power. And a clutch replacement is difficult and can cost between 5 and 700 hundred quid so budget for this. Again Norris designsd can sort you with lots of GTIR stuff. Try the GTIROC , Calebs a top dude if hes still running it,

A bit worried about the "300 bhp is easily achieved with mild mods". Talk to the guys at GTIROC, but I believ you'll need to go above the magic 1 bar for 300 BHP and so you'll need forged pistons and other expensive kit or your engine will be a timebomb.

Take advice!! from peeps with modded cars who've had those mods reliably for a long time. GTIR engines are very expensive to rebuild , same as scoobs.

God i do go on don't I, zips up his big gob.

Have fun with the cars you crazy kids, just make sure you wallet can keep up! just like mine can't with the scoobs thirst, but I don't care (maniacal laughter!)

never driven a pulsar so cant comment on how they drive, prob quite similar, but at the end of the day its a poor mans performance car, the scoobs got alot more respect on the road. so if you cant afford the scoob go for a pulsar as thats prob the only difference.

i have a scoob, bruv has a pulsar. straight line spped there aint much between them ( i just pip him at the post). corners, the scoob is alot more setteled but again, its alot down to the driver.

tuning wise, both have a similar potential. Pulsar's are fragile, especially gearboxes.

Thing that puts me off them is the build quality. my car you can live with happily, cruises lovely, no squeaks, rattles e.t.c. his is the opposite. it rattles like a nova, everything falls apart in it.

however, pulsars are cheaper, but not by much. it is really a hard call. much like Astra GTE 16V V's RS turbo.

i would say go down mainly on looks as this is all the cars really have to offer as a major difference. both are fast, handle well, look good and get noticed.

i fell safer in the scoob aswell tho, im intending to get a bit more setteled soon with the missus and so would prefer me scoob. it can be a family car aswell as a supersonic japanese rally machine...

Import WRXs are usually group 19 or 20 depending on the company you use.

I have owned both and my scoob cost me money, in problems
oil pipe, starter motor and misfire at high revs so I sold it
nice car but not raw enough, the pulsar I own now gets plenty of
thumbs up and wicked and bad etc etc as did the scoob, hate to say it my pulsar beats most scoobs round the twisties but it is not standard (300bhp, suspension, and quality tyres) oh yeah and my race license! helps, so horses for courses eh and Brun yours is **** too ok

Personally i dont think they look much different - both got large bonnet vents, headlights look the same, big front bumper - only difference is the size and the pulsar is a hatchback!

And do you really think if i wanted a car just so its looks good ... id buy a Pulsar?! LOL!!

I want one because they are pretty much unique and also cos they hold so much (usually) reliable power in such a small, lightweight car!!
