Paul, I think your first post about the CTR said it had 'sod all torque' which is wrong and hence my reply. The CTR is one of the torquiest engines in it's class (and that doesn't include a Scoob imho) I don't know where the misconceptions come from either - maybe it's the rush at the top end that makes lower down feel worse than it actually is, maybe people are basing their comments on having driven older Civic VTi's?

I don't think anyone would try and argue it is anywhere near as torquey as a Scoob, or other Turbo motors
I think this is where the misunderstanding comes in - I agree that they're not in the same class, but the original poster asked for a comparison of the two and inevitably most people look at the power figures (200hp vs 215hp for standard UK) and 0-60/0-100 etc concluding that there's not a lot of difference. Hence why I made the point about the Impreza being much more torquey than the CTR because it's a completely different engine design philosophy.

Not to mention it becomes even more of a silly comparison when you consider the UK Impreza could be described as undertuned and easily capable of 260bhp/260lb-ft with little expense, whereas the CTR is quite a highly-strung NA 2.0 (and even N/A cars with tuning potential tend to be a lot more difficult/expensive to tune anyway).

As a final point I believe they are different classes of cars - performance may (or may not ) be broadly similar but that is about it, when you take price into consideration your comparison between the CTR and Yaris is as applicable as this comparison between CTR and Scoob
Yep exactly. But most people simply look at the power figures and then suddenly place them in the same category. IMO the CTR and ST170 are in a more similar class - proof being that they have similar engine configs (2.0 I4 NA) and almost identical torque outputs. The CTR has 30BHP extra though which reinforces my point that the power is produced by pushing the torque up the rev range and allowing it to rev higher. I wouldn't say it has excellent torque for its class, yes it's good but there are others just as good, but more so I'd say it has excellent power output for the class.

They are completely different types of car, and not really good comparisons, but if people want to compare them then you should do so on all counts and driving styles etc. Power, torque, acceleration, handling (wet + dry), running costs, and so on.

ok I've read the post with alot of interest I too have the choice of either a CTR or a scooby and this is how I see it.

Scooby wins...I've driven the CTR and yes it is quick if not nearly as quick as the Scooby, but it deafens you to do so, don't get me wrong it gives you a buzz but do you really want to have that much noise all the time ya put ya foot down?? Though the VTEC hit is very much like a turbo!!
I work for honda so the CTR would probably be a better choice money wise but in this land of the rain I've seen many of them in our workshop being repaired and yes if you don't run the engine in you can have problems (but then that is the same with all cars)

You could argue about which one is best all day long and still not come to an answer it's just simple which one tugs the old heart strings? How me it's the Scooby, the sould of that Flat four the grip the speed and this may seem funny to some of you but also the look of it. The CTR os good and if tomorrow all the scoobies where to vanish then I've buy a CTR but until that comes its flatfour all the way

just my view

However, compared to my scooby, which including mods still costs less, it can't compete!
Like thats a good comparison. 2nd hand car compared to scoob. Classic shapes were £21k new compared to £16k for the CTR.

Saxo, the Honda may be loud, but there is no way on this earth that if you get a scoob, it won't end up being decatted

Then you will know about loud

P1 you correct that it isn't a fair comparison but it was the choice I had. I could have probably stretched to a new CTR and it would have been great to have a new car again but I feel that all round the scooby is better and to me seems a little more special!

I agree, the scooby will end up decatted vts2000

ok valid point lol :P

The CTR is nice to drive and it does kick in the higher rev band, and not it's not slow on the pick up....."it's horses for course" I surpose

Both car do different things very very well just depends on what you want from a car.

CTR will be better on a track as it is faster (in dry) it's ben proven lots of times but on the open road I think the scooby would be a much better choice.

Slightly off topic just going to have a look at a RB5 at my local dealership anything I should know....has anyone got a sight on this model?

Surley the CTR will be miles cheaper to run, whats the point of having a nice car of you can't drive it anywhere. Thats the main reason i've yet to buy my scoob - should have my clio williams soon I will get a scoob when i can afford to run it without too much constraint.

Interesting how the MY03 will compare to the CTR - I've had my CTR for a year and had a MY99 classic Scoob for 2 years before that, and I prefer the Honda. The Scoob was very safe to drive, fine (except in snow and ice where it got going really well, just wouldn't steer or stop... at least the Civic won't let you get going in the first place ). The Scoob is fast, too - so long as you're really clogging it. What I've gained is throttle response (it's actually easier to overtake things when an unexpected gap arises because there's no turbo lag), it's got loads of torque low down (plenty to use 2nd for pulling away, no bogging down if you don't give it 3000rpm like the Scoob). And it's basically more raw to drive.

Downsides? It gets affected by the weight of passengers more, you don't get the turbo kick, only 2 doors and 2 rear seatbelts, boot's a bit smaller. Eats front tyres a bit too. But, and this is crucial from my point of view, it's more fun to drive.

However, running costs are nowhere near the Scoob's - done 10,000 miles and haven't seen a garage yet. 29-30mpg (c.f. 22-23mpg average while I owned the Scoob and my driving hasn't changed). And it only needs 2 replacement tyres at a time

I'm tempted by a MY03 because, having 2 kids, the extra doors and bootspace are useful. But really the only reason to change is because it's nice to have a contrast, isn't it? So the Civic would suit anyone who likes the Scoob but wants something different. Nobody keeps cars forever, and I doubt anyone would find 2wd such a difficult thing to live with for a couple of years!

All this bull****e about Scooby's being faster than CTR makes me laugh, I raced a CTR from the lights, I was behind him, so I had to wait for him to floor it and couldn't use the scooby's better 0-60 time. I didn't think it would matter seen as it was a dual carriage way, but I only gained on him very slowly up from 0 to 140. The gap started out at about 15m and closed to side by side at about 135.
I was well shocked.
I had a 00my spec Impreza 25k Miles, with decat downpipe and a panel filter
He had CTR not more than 6 months old.
Got to a big round about and I got blocked and backed off, but I hammered it round the roundabout and caught him up.
The Impreza was faster in the corners and more or less the same on the motorway.
Mines gone now(still miss it). If I got another I'd have to mod it.

And he'd win....I mean we all know the Vauxhall Nova SRi is the greatest performing car ever built?

I test drove a CTR, wasn't very impressed at all, it made me like my UK MY98 Turbo even more.

There's a lot of nice features but I know I'd soon get bored.

But this is just IMHO

Cheers

We had a test drive of a CTR about a fortnight ago. Neither myself nor my Wife were that impressed. The dealership were quite snooty too, until they saw the WRX. Then they tried the hard sell. Bye Bye Honda Man...

A 5dr Scoob to go with the 4dr I think.

im guilty

i spent 12 months deciding on a impreza or a ctr

i bought a ctr, i test drove them both in dry and wet, i borrowed my bosses UK turbo for a weekend.

the reasons why? cant really say how i came to the decision in the end took me bloody long enough. Just seemed the right car and i love it. Probably will get a 4x4 turbo next tho just to say ive done it.

Horses for courses really. try em both m8, i think that this thread has demonstrated that neither is better they are just different, and that why we love cars ahhhhhhhhh

PS u wanna trade for a weekend
