Air pistols have not been outlawed - they are more popular than ever and loads of Walther, Colt, Browning etc replicas around - which must cause the police ARU's a headache.

I studied martial arts for a number of years - a streetfighting style that stole all the good bits of boxing, karate, kung fu, judo etc. I have never used it deliberately but if I am backed into a corner I cannot get out of then given no other choice I am going to immobilise the other person, if I can, in self defence. If it's me or them, and they start it, and I can't get away, I don't see a problem with that.

I also take our two shotguns to and from clay shooting grounds. I take gun safety VERY seriously and if I have the guns in the car I make sure I do not go near any situation that might even remotely lead to trouble. I don't want to lose my shotgun license.

The best thing with all these cases is if possible not to be in the position of getting drawn into it in the first place.

To clarify my earlier post, IIRC break barrel/pump up air pistols were banned, but CO2 powered (capsules etc) pistols were allowed to stay and this is where the huge market in replicas has sprung up. IMO this was a big mistake and replica guns of ANY type whatsoever should be banned.

Stuart, I don't envy any of you in the forces looking down the barrel of a gun and trying to see if it is a .177 CO2 replica or real. I guess the only way is to give them the standard warning, if that doesn't work, give them a third nostril (or in the case of Daniella Westbrook a second) and check afterwards!!

Hmm,

Sounds like I need not have dismantled (sp?) my old Webley Hurricane, purposely destroyed various items, and deposited the pieces in various bins over the period of about 2 months then ...... after I remembered I had it and the period for handing in "illegal" arms to your nearest cop shop was over.

Doh!

Martial arts in whatever form carry a rule. Most students uphold this rule, some sadly don't . However, more often than not it is when the persons martial arts licence is excempt! Sadly there is no control over this, most sensais' however will install a very high...often militant level of discipline within the art that they are teaching and also their do-jo or gym. All of my martial arts friends have only ever used the 'art' on someone in a defense situation, for fear of the sensai reeping punishment

'Most' street attacks and street 'fights' are in confined areas. To be able to use a martial art on someone in that sort of area is not really practical, nor do you have time to react and plan your defense. Escpecially when they are coming for you with a knife The simple rule is to always( no matter how trained you are) avoid confrontation. Its so dangerous unless you are trained intensively on how to react. Being fronted by a 5 foot lad flicking is fingers next to his sides and boobing is going to be just as dangerous as someone lurching for you with a bottle. Having been bruised and battered in a nightclub by 5 grown men, after dealing with three taught me the lesson that you are as strong as your courage. You need fear to gain courage and you should ALWAYS fear your apponent. Be they male/female/armed or 65 years old. And should you ever attack someone and they say "I have to warn you that I am certified to defend myself by using XXXXXXX on you should you proceed" means 9 times out of 10, be prepared to get a slap in a proffesional sense of the word! By law, a certified martial arts student or teacher needs to warn an attacker of this, as they....dependant on level of abilty...have the abilty to severly damage you without having to use weapons!

Walk away and use words such as "sorry" as apposed to "come on then, get ready for some medievel whoooop ****" (I have heard a 30 something male say that before being dropped by a 14 year old female kick boxer)
