Balancing is a very good idear, the best way to balance is, balance the crank by its self then the crank and front pulley then crank, pulley, flywheel and finaly crank, pulley, flywheel and clutch cover, this way all the rotating parts are balanced as separate items and as one rotating mass. The heavier the mass the more out of balance it will be if there is any run out or machining error.it is also a good idear to balance the rods end to end and the pistons also the only part not to be balanced is the clutch plate as it does not stop in the same place twice. Sounds like you have a nice engine on the way be nice to here of your results when finished and how the Gems compared to the other ecus

Question

Bob, SMG,

I would say Obvious.
But as I'm only going to face a basic clutch and flywheel replacement on my GC8, how can I get this balancing sorted out on my own?

Do you proceed by hand spinning the parts on an axle and then removing material on the opposite of the "heavy" part of it ?
I don't expect that we have to go as far as a dynamic balancing (axial & radial)?

Not that far from the subject and oftenly considered at the same time, is there any risk to replace the heavy std access. pulley by a solid lightened one on a stock block?

Unless you can get someone in france to balance it for you on a balancing machine there is not a lot you can do, when i balance an assembly its spinning at about 1000rpm, a bad flywheel can be 100-150 grams out, this at 1000rpm will create a violent wobble on the rollers, all i can think to do is run a dail test indicator on the clutch face of the flywheel to check for any run out whilst turning the flywheel that is attatched to the crank. If this is true then use a micrometer to check that the flywheel is the same thickness in say 6 points if it is then it should not be a to far out as for the clutch you will have to take your chances. I understand what you mean about spinning the flywheel, this is what i do before spinning up a V8 assembly to check that it is at least staticly balanced as a couterbalance weight has to be used but this will give no real idear to true balance.
Steve.
