STi7/UK Suspension rattle: here we go again
#32
Two more observations,probably nothing but...
1)Noticed that if you open the boot(must be halfway only) and then push the hinge arm forward and back there is a good few centimetres play in the rear offside(and makes a noise) but none on the drivers side.
2)If you stand about 5 foot behind the car and look at the tyres,I can see the offside rear tyre protruding from the body,on the drivers rear side cannot see the tyre at all.Anybody else got this?

Right, I don't think i've joined this thread or the previous one before, but it seems that the time has come for me to pipe up about my STI Type UK.....
From new, I noticed the low speed knock on my car almost straight away, which at the time I didn't think this was such a big problem as the demo car I test drove before buying mine did the same. So I put it down to a feature, rather than a problem.... After a couple of weeks my problem went away all together...
In May, I fitted the STI WR Mud Flaps to my car. Have run the car since then with no issues at all, up until now....
I don't think I am cornering any faster than I did before, but my FRONT mud flaps are touching the road surface when doing any sort of spirited run... This has only started to happen in the last 3 weeks, and, whilst it is not causing any long term cosmetic effects to the mud flaps, it does get a bit annoying, especially when passengers are asking what the noise is...
To cap it off, my rear end is starting to knock a little bit more again....
I never mentioned to my dealer before about the rear end, but I am thinking of bringing this to their attention now. But more importantly, what the hell is going on at the front end??? Are my front shocks on their way out?? Can't see any signs of leakage but that said, weather is so sh1te, I haven't any time to check properly...
The front end suspension movement is well timed incidently with a full tyre change. I have had Goodyear GSD3 F1's on for about the same time as the fronts have been rubbing the ground. Surely I haven't got that much more front end grip that the car leans more?? I have driven on wet and greasy roads and the same has happened....
Also had PPP on for a couple of weeks now, but again like I said before, I don't think my cornering speed has increased....
Well confused at the moment, miffed as well, as I think their is a problem with the fitting of the PPP zorst also... Sure it's blowing at the bottom of the downpipe
What with this and my bonnet paint chipping away like WR Blue paint is going out of fashion, I am quickly loosing the love for my scoob.....
Cheers
Simon

At least the rest of us don't have a high-speed problem to go with the low-speed one
Diagnostics for the 'knock' are: - a) low, or very low, speed; b) NSR only; c) exacerbated under lateral load, and d) unpredictable.
Is that what you've got, Simon??

The passenger side is not necessarily the least loaded side - the road is generally rougher that side and more heavily cambered to aid drainage. Roundabouts have a bearing also. Haven't yet had a problem with my suspension but the brakes knock. Dealer can't cure this either.

My car also has the NSR knock, Spoke to CVC today regarding any possible fix, and they inform me that they have some 'modified/upgraded' units on the way in about 1-2 weeks!!!!
Whatever that means, probably just coloured them blue

Update: - as STIman
Car went in for 10000 service yesterday and, encouraged by my letter to Ed Swatman, was driven by the Regional Service Manager (again!) He accepted that the rattle was still there (my nightmare was that the car would go quiet on me for the duration which would have caused a major credibility problem) Its now to be fitted with a new/different suspension subassembly (??JDM) - certainly allegedly Ex-Japan, and newly imported. Watch this space.....

Sorry Mark.... had (mis?)understood that you'd got fed up and had decided to sell your STi which is why I haven't copied you recent exchanges with Shaun. However, the gist is as in my post. You got PPP??: if not, you definitely want it

I have a MY97 WRX. I have the rattling in the driver side rear
supension with Bilstein damper insert/eibach spring and Tein
height adjustable coil over. Problem is with slow speed and
the sound was particularly noticable when leaving indoor car park.
No problem with high speed. Recently changed to KYB coil over and
the rattling becomes history.

Hi Phil - at the 11th hour I had a change of heart - and after 4 years of Scooby ownership - I didn't fancy driving around in something else - so I am pleased to say my Scoob is here, complete with PPP and suspension rattle!!!

I had one of those wierd thoughts yesterday....
I wonder if the 'Upgraded / Modified' shocks are from a My03 STi?.
Otherwise, if the MY03 has had NO changes to the rear strut assembly, then they should have the same problem?
Anyone else think of this?

Update:
My Dealer has been supplied with TWO sets of Damper, Topmount and (for the first time) Springs: this lot to be fitted next Thursday. They are allegedly a)"different" and b) "from Japan", but S-UK have their cards close to the chest. Has crossed my mind that they might be STi8 sets, but don't know how sensible such a thought is....
Will report back!

Phil, the STi 8 (or GDB C type as it is known here) has new valves which aremore progressive than the original design. The JDM rides far more smoothly now as a result.
Good luck with them and hope you get this sorted once and for all.

UPDATE
Two full sets of "toleranced" dampers, topmounts and springs fitted last Thursday. The Rattle is gone (almost)
To be replaced by:
THE BANG
I now have a very noisy (but only occasional) sharp 'Bang' from (apparently) lower down in the suspension subassembly (NSR only, still). It may be that this goes away when the suspension is warmed up, but I'm still running to gain experience.
Where next, I ask!!
To anyone who's driven an STi8 - does it have this problem also???

Sorry to hear that Phil!!!
Perhaps you should demand a set of STi 8 dampers and springs all round? (I *think* they are interchangable).
Matt.

Well Phil, I've driven several JDMs both on track and public roads - even run some accross ripple strips
No rattles evident (even with the wacko Potenza 070s). But it is early days for the model here, something may come up...

Phil, if you maintain some kind of list, I have this too on my STI7, MY02. Right side back. Only light lateral movements seems to start the knocking sound. Will have it looked at for first service. Any advice as to what to "instruct" the dealer to do/look for? I am following your private "war" with interest.
Cheers

Hi STiVII from Oslo,
Overwhelming probability is poorly toleranced parts. Subaru-UK claim that fitting a revised set of parts ex-Japan has solved "every car to which it has been applied" in the UK. There is no doubt that many have been cured thereby, but there may still be others like myself who would disagree. This is a long-running saga, so some of the steam has gone out of it (this is the third thread - you should have seen the first two!!). I can't guide you as to the part numbers/designation of these revised parts, so the best I can do is to advise you to INSIST your Dealer researches what sets of parts are being fitted (in the main successfully) in the UK.
BTW yours is the first ever I've heard of with the problem on the right hand side (facing forward from behind the car). Every single other one has been left hand - our "NSR" (also in Norway IIRR??)
Regards

I want this sorted. Hows about a mass visit to SUK sometime. Maybe then theyll take notice. I'm up for it. Anyone else.

Quote from Technical Director
"...we....have been successful in all other case by changing the same components as installed on your vehicle....." (by which I take it to mean, 'using the latest batch of parts') - Note the use of the word "all". I expressed my doubts, but didn't want a stand-up argument over the 'phone, when negotiating the next stage of fixing my car. Beside which, this thread has yielded some reports of 100% cures...... I thought about starting a new thread about that statement, but people are quite reasonably getting bored....
