"Mostly for Keeping Fit"
Thai Boxing or box-a-cise it is then. More and more ladies seem to be going this way. Maybe because it has the fastest results when you look at physical changes in body form.
If you can get to a boxing gym that might be worth looking into.
Did some boxing training before taking my dan grading and sometimes before competitions.
Technique might let me down but stamina won't.

I agree with chrome, for a woman who isn't that big wing chun would be a good option for real self defence I think p1 enthusiast must have had a bad teacher if he thinks it takes years to get benefits from wing chun. I felt that i learnt more with every lesson since the teacher James Sinclair fully understood the difference betwen the class room and the 'streets' where it all happens. my sister is quite a timid lass and quite quiet. personaly i think thai is probably a little one side as it mostly focus`s on attack rather than defence and countering, altough she probaly enjoy it as it gives you a thorough work out.

Every martial art has for's and against's,alot depending on the instructor teaching it and the person's ability to use it when needed. Most martial artist's tend to forget the different scenario's between fighting in the club and using their art in a street situation i.e fight or flight!
For the record I am a yodansha in shotokan, and train in course's with tsyoui(similar to Kykhoshinkai),which basically mean's i wouldn't be any good in a street fight as i train in low stance's!

again..look at systems www.ermaa.com....developed by the Spetsnaz..it is truly effective and not based on strength but on concepts and body mechanics....I am 5'6 and train with a bunch of 6+ Brick sh1thouses and it works with them..training is realistic but in a spirit of learning...any women would not be intimidated as we spend most of the time laughing..very informal...no belts just the quest for effective methods...
