showing ignorance of scoobies here

not sure where your abs fuse is but a customer of ours had a similar worry and rather than pull the fuse he had a switch wired into the fuse holder instead of the fuse with a new fuse in the wiring. then he could "disconnect" the abs when he needed to and could reconnect as soon as he was clear of the snow

I have had experience of driving down a steep snowy hill with ABS. Might as well be in a bobsleigh, I had to bounce off the banks on either side to slow down and finished my performance with a lovely hand brake turn just to stop. Not recomended. Where is the ABS fuse?

I agree with the winter tyres comment, but like many people, haven't got the money/storage space etc to justify them UNLESS we get an atrocious winter - which is probably about due.

Anyway,

- Toyota Celica GT4 was atrocious and heavy once sideways approaching a Ski bus on the wrong side of a French road. Missed, just (30mph)

- Audi A4 Quattro - did brakes tests from 30mph on 2 inches of packed,frozen snow on my local empty side road. It took three times as long to pull up as in the wet ! (Obviously approx)

- As the Mini man said (!) buy a Mini (great in snow, I agree), or narrower, higher profile winter tyres

Had an absolute frightmare in the scoob driving on snow in Zurich last December. Rolling down a gentle ramp to join the main road on worn Bridgestone RE010s (a shocking tyre even in the dry) and the car just wouldn't slow down. Only doing a couple of miles per hour, but it just wouldn't stop!! Gently slid out into the main road. Luckily nothing was coming.

Got Michelin Pilot Alpin winter tyres fitted last week, so this type of problem shouldn't be happening again.

Here's a quick calculation
P1 + 276BHP(ish) + 215/40ZR 17 + Snow = Garage!!

I Know what i'm doing if it's a bad winter, last year was fun on the snow but scary in my Scooby, accelerating or braking just made the car slide.... so I will use my girlfriends Celica 2.0GT again! Won't be so miserable if I pranged it.

Secret agent Man. Another equation - and cheaper than buying tyres:-

Toyota Tercel selectable 4wd (70bhp) + 'All Season' tyres =
safer than an Impreza in the snow.

Take of the wheels and Tyres fit a set of 17 Skinny M&S tyres and wheels and it will handle like tommi Makinen in the snow leave it on Standard 16 or 17" and it will not !!!!!! Absolutely terrible in the snow!!!!!!!!!!!!! I almost totalled mine in very light snow just managed to save it

MGF drivers in snowy countries (like in Scotland ... Alpine Europe) sometimes substitute the very skinny base Maestro wheels and store their wider alloys. Result ... lots more grip and hey, the car still steers ... none of this straight ahead or sideways malarkey at the T-junctions ...

Maestro wheels with legal tyres can be picked up for loose change in local breakers.

If you must go in the snow, there must be some cheap substitute equivalent for Subarus .... ?
